• Output Error Identification in the Presence of Structural Disturbances

        Amir H. Shirdel,Jari M. Boling,Hannu T. Toivonen 제어로봇시스템학회 2018 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2018 No.10

In empirical system identification, models that are identified using output-error method are better suited for long-term predictions. The non-stationary structural disturbances, such as trends and outliers in data can have adverse affects on the estimation of the system parameters. We propose a method that performs the estimation of model parameters and structural disturbances simultaneously. The output-error model is constructed by an orthonormal basis functions (OBF) such as Laguerre or Kautz filters. The identification problem is formulated as a least-squares problem with a sparsity constraint, which is approximately solved using ℓ₁-regularization with iterative reweighting. The Hankel reduction method is used for model order determination and reduction. The presented method is tested on simulated linear examples. The effects of cases in which different initial chosen poles and different order of OBF expansions are evaluated. The suggested method shows better performance compared to the standard least squares method regarding poles and mean square error of the identified model.

Adiabatic Nanofocusing Scattering-Type Optical Nanoscopy of Individual Gold Nanoparticles

        Sadiq, Diyar,Shirdel, Javid,Lee, Jae Sung,Selishcheva, Elena,Park, Namkyoo,Lienau, Christoph American Chemical Society 2011 NANO LETTERS Vol.11 No.4

We explore imaging of local electromagnetic fields in the vicinity of metallic nanoparticles using a grating-coupled scattering-type near-field scanning optical microscope. In this microscope, propagating surface plasmon polariton wavepackets are launched onto smooth gold tapers where they are adiabatically focused toward the nanometer-sized taper apex. We report two-dimensional raster-scanned optical images showing pronounced near-field contrast and demonstrating sub-30 nm resolution imaging of localized surface plasmon polariton fields of spherical and elliptical nanoparticles. By comparison to three-dimensional finite-difference time domain simulations, we conclude that virtually background-free near-field imaging is achieved. The microscope combines deep subwavelength resolution, high local field intensities and a straightforward imaging contrast, making it interesting for a variety of applications in linear and nonlinear nanospectroscopy.

Graphic Abstract

Evaluation of the role of TAX, HBZ, and HTLV-1 proviral load on the survival of ATLL patients

        Mohammad Mehdi Akbarin,Abbas Shirdel,Alireza Bari,Seyedeh Tahereh Mohaddes,Houshang Rafatpanah,Ehsan Ghayour Karimani,Kobra Etminani,Amin Golabpour,Reza Torshizi 대한혈액학회 2017 Blood Research Vol.51 No.2

Background: Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is an aggressive malignancy with very poor prog-nosis and short survival, caused by the human T-lymphotropic virus type-1 (HTLV-1). The HTLV-1 biomarkers trans-activator x (TAX) and HTLV-1 basic leucine zipper factor (HBZ) are main oncogenes and life-threatening elements. This study aimed to assess the role of the TAX and HBZ genes and HTLV-1 proviral load (PVL) in the survival of patients with ATLL. Methods: Forty-three HTLV-1-infected individuals, including 18 asymptomatic carriers (AC) and 25 ATLL patients (ATLL), were evaluated between 2011 and 2015. The mRNA expression of TAX and HBZ and the HTLV-1 PVL were measured by quantitative PCR. Results: Significant differences in the mean expression levels of TAX and HBZ were observed be-tween the two study groups (ATLL and AC, P=0.014 and P=0.000, respectively). In addi-tion, the ATLL group showed a significantly higher PVL than AC (P=0.000). There was a significant negative relationship between PVL and survival among all study groups (P=0.047). Conclusion: The HTLV-1 PVL and expression of TAX and HBZ were higher in the ATLL group than in the AC group. Moreover, a higher PVL was associated with shorter survival time among all ATLL subjects. Therefore, measurement of PVL, TAX, and HBZ may be beneficial for monitoring and predicting HTLV-1-infection outcomes, and PVL may be useful for prog-nosis assessment of ATLL patients. This research demonstrates the possible correlation between these virological markers and survival in ATLL patients.

      • Adiabatic nanofocusing on ultrasmooth single-crystalline gold tapers creates a 10-nm-sized light source with few-cycle time resolution.

        Schmidt, Slawa,Piglosiewicz, Bj?rn,Sadiq, Diyar,Shirdel, Javid,Lee, Jae Sung,Vasa, Parinda,Park, Namkyoo,Kim, Dai-Sik,Lienau, Christoph American Chemical Society 2012 ACS NANO Vol.6 No.7

We demonstrate adiabatic nanofocusing of few-cycle light pulses using ultrasharp and ultrasmooth single-crystalline gold tapers. We show that the grating-induced launching of spectrally broad-band surface plasmon polariton wavepackets onto the shaft of such a taper generates isolated, point-like light spots with 10 fs duration and 10 nm diameter spatial extent at its very apex. This nanofocusing is so efficient that nanolocalized electric fields inducing strong optical nonlinearities at the tip end are reached with conventional high repetition rate laser oscillators. We use here the resulting second harmonic to fully characterize the time structure of the localized electric field in frequency-resolved interferometric autocorrelation measurements. Our results strongly suggest that these nanometer-sized ultrafast light spots will enable new experiments probing the dynamics of optical excitations of individual metallic, semiconducting, and magnetic nanostructures.

      • A 40-year Retrospective Clinicopathological Study of Ameloblastoma in Iran

Saghravanian, Nasrollah,Salehinejad, Jahanshah,Ghazi, Narges,Shirdel, Mohammad,Razi, Mahsa Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.2

Ameloblastoma is the most common epithelial odontogenic tumor. It may show locally invasive behavior resulting in recurrence and malignancy. Therefore, appropriate diagnosis of this tumor is necessary. The aim of this study was to evaluate clinicopathological characteristics of ameloblastomas in an Iranian population. We present a 40-year retrospective study of patients diagnosed from 1971 to 2010 in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Faculty of Dentistry, Mashhad, Iran. Information gathered from patient records included age, gender, tumor location and histologic type. The frequency of odontogenic tumors among all lesions was 2.08% and ameloblastoma with 88 samples demonstrated the greatest prevalence (41.5%). Regarding gender, 60% of samples occurred in males. The mean age of studied patients was $33.02{\pm} 15.74years$ with a peak of occurrence in the third decade of life. The most frequent location of tumor was the mandibles (93.2%). Eighty five (96.6%) tumors were recorded as benign and 3 (3.4%) as malignant. Of benign tumors, 62 (72.9%), 20 (23.5%) and 3 (3.6%) cases were of conventional, unicyctic and peripheral types, respectively. In contrast to most previous studies, the most common histologic subtype in the present study was plexiform. Knowledge of the incidence of ameloblastoma and its clinicopathologic features including most common location, gender and age distribution in different ethnogeographic backgrounds is necessary for accurate diagnosis and proper treatment.
