        Molecular Characterization of a Novel Vegetative Insecticidal Protein from Bacillus thuringiensis Effective Against Sap-Sucking Insect Pest

        Several isolates of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) were screened for the vegetative insecticidal protein (Vip) effective against sap-sucking insect pests. Screening results were based on LC50 values against cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii), one of the dangerous pests of various crop plants including cotton. Among the isolates, the Bt#BREF24 showed promising results, and upon purification the aphidicidal protein was recognized as a binary toxin. One of the components of this binary toxin was identified by peptide sequencing to be a homolog of Vip2A that has been reported previously in other Bacillus spp. Vip2 belongs to the binary toxin group Vip1-Vip2, and is responsible for the enzymatic activity; and Vip1 is the translocation and receptor binding protein. The two genes encoding the corresponding proteins of the binary toxin, designated as vip2Ae and vip1Ae, were cloned from the Bt#BREF24, sequenced, and heterologously expressed in Escherichia coli. Aphid feeding assay with the recombinant proteins confirmed that these proteins are indeed the two components of the binary toxins, and the presence of both partners is essential for the activity. Aphid specificity of the binary toxin was further verified by ligand blotting experiment, which identified an~50 kDa receptor in the brush border membrane vesicles of the cotton aphids only, but not in the lepidopteran insects. Our finding holds a promise of its use in future as a candidate gene for developing transgenic crop plants tolerant against sap-sucking insect pests.

        Analytical, numerical and experimental investigation of low velocity impact response of laminated composite sandwich plates using extended high order sandwich panel theory

        The Nonlinear dynamic response of a sandwich plate subjected to the low velocity impact is theoretically and experimentally investigated. The Hertz law between the impactor and the plate is taken into account. Using the Extended High Order Sandwich Panel Theory (EHSAPT) and the Ritz energy method, the governing equations are derived. The skins follow the Third order shear deformation theory (TSDT) that has hitherto not reported in conventional EHSAPT. Besides, the three dimensional elasticity is used for the core. The nonlinear Von Karman relations for strains of skins and the core are adopted. Time domain solution of such equations is extracted by means of the well-known fourth-order Runge-Kutta method. The effects of core-to-skin thickness ratio, initial velocity of the impactor, the impactor mass and position of the impactor are studied in detail. It is found that these parameters play significant role in the impact force and dynamic response of the sandwich plate. Finally, some low velocity impact tests have been carried out by Drop Hammer Testing Machine. The results are compared with experimental data acquired by impact testing on sandwich plates as well as the results of finite element simulation.

        Studies on the chemical constituents of the stems of Morinda citrifolia, Linn. have led to the isolation of two new compounds, morindicone (9-hydroxy-2-methoxy-4-methyl-3,10-anthracenedione, 1) and morinthone (4-methoxy-3-heptadecylxanthone, 2), as well as two known constituents, 1-hydroxy-2-methylanthraquinone (3) and 2-hydroxymethylanthraquinone (4).Their structures were elucidated by spectral analysis including 2D NMR techniques.

        Improving the cycle stability and rate performance of LiNi0.91Co0.06Mn0.03O2 Ni-rich cathode material by La2O3 coating for Lithium-ion batteries

        In this wok, a uniform layer of La2O3 is coated on the surface of LiNi0.91Co0.06Mn0.03O2 Ni-rich cathode material by using a wet coating process. The XPS and EDX analysis confirms the presence of La2O3 coating on the surface of NCM. The coated samples deliver the superior electrochemical performance, 0.2 wt % La2O3 (LaO-0.2) NCM exhibits discharge capacity of 202.7 mAh g− 1 in 1st cycle and delivered the cycle stability of 87.2% after 100 cycles. Besides, the enhanced capacity retention, LaO-0.2 has delivered very high discharge capacity of 80.3 mAh g− 1 at very high C-rate of 5C while the pristine sample shows very low discharge capacity (33.4 mAh g− 1 ). CV results shows the significant suppression in the intensity of H2–H3 which indicates the superior electrochemical stability of LaO-0.2 NCM. Thus, we can confirm that La2O3 coating is promising technique to achieve superior electrochemical performance in the long term cycling process.

        Geometrically nonlinear analysis of sandwich beams under low velocity impact: analytical and experimental investigation

        Nonlinear low velocity impact response of sandwich beam with laminated composite face sheets and soft core is studied based on Extended High Order Sandwich Panel Theory (EHSAPT). The face sheets follow the Third order shear deformation beam theory (TSDT) that has hitherto not reported in conventional EHSAPT. Besides, the two dimensional elasticity is used for the core. The nonlinear Von Karman type relations for strains of face sheets and the core are adopted. Contact force between the impactor and the beam is obtained using the modified Hertz law. The field equations are derived via the Ritz based applied to the total energy of the system. The solution is obtained in the time domain by implementing the well-known Runge-Kutta method. The effects of boundary conditions, core-to-face sheet thickness ratio, initial velocity of the impactor, the impactor mass and position of the impactor are studied in detail. It is found that each of these parameters have significant effect on the impact characteristics which should be considered. Finally, some low velocity impact tests have been carried out by Drop Hammer Testing Machine. The contact force histories predicted by EHSAPT are in good agreement with that obtained by experimental results.

        Tribalism and Religious Elites in Palestine

          이 연구는 팔레스타인 종교 엘리트와 부족적인 심성의 영향을 알아보기 위한 것이다. 팔레스타인에 뚜렷한 자신들의 종교적 성향을 가진 부족들이 있다고 보기는 힘들지만, 부족적인 심성은 존재한다. 부족적인 심성은 사상과 공적인 행위에서 드러나며, 종교 엘리트도 예외는 아니다.<BR>  이 연구는 팔레스타인 부족주의와 종교 엘리트들의 특징을 다음과 같이 결론내렸다. 종교 엘리트들은 팔레스타인 사회를 주도해오거나 근대 역사상 팔레스타인 지도부에서 중요한 역할을 해왔다. 종교 엘리트들은 종교와 전통 사이의 명확한 분할선을 긋지 않았다. 이슬람의 가르침은 사회의 가치와 개념들과 혼합되어 있다. 대부분의 사람들은 그들 자신의 전통들을 성스러운 이슬람의 가르침으로 받아들이고 있다. 종교 엘리트들은 사회적인 지위, 개인의 열망, 정치적인 이해관계에 적합한 방법으로 종교적 가르침을 해석한다. 따라서 종교 엘리트들 사이에서 이슬람에 대한 해석은 서로 서로 매우 다르다. 이슬람 이론에 대한 연구자로서 나는 다음과 같은 결론을 내린다. 이슬람을 과학적으로 이해하기 위해서는 종교 엘리트들을 주목할 필요가 있다.<BR>  이슬람은 부족의 호전성, 광신주의, 차별대우를 인정하지 않는다. 이슬람은 오직 부족주의가 제공하는 유전된 혈통의 가치만을 인정한다. 이슬람에서 부족주의는 개인적인 관계를 정립하는 것만을 돕는다. 모든 유형의 종교 엘리트들이 이러한 명확한 이슬람의 규정들을 지키지는 것은 아니며, 부족주의를 이용해서 자신들의 집단이나 파벌을 형성하고 강화시킨다. 부족주의는 상속된 지위에 대해서 주목하고 중요한 가치를 부여하며 성취한 업적에 대해서는 거의 주목하지 않는다.<BR>  팔레스타인인들이 발전을 지향하고 자신들의 문제들을 극복하기 위해서는, 종교 엘리트들이 근대적인 체제를 정비하고 근대적인 정치 구조를 수립하는데 전념해야한다. 그렇지 않으면, 해방과 독립을 위한 팔레스타인인들의 대부분의 노력들은 심각한 어려움에 직면하게 될 것이다. 전통적인 부족주의는 근대성과 국가 건설에 장애물이다.

        Increasing ethylene production as a high value hydrocarbon in Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reactor: A concept reactor for combining FT with oxidative coupling of methane

        The paper proposes a concept configuration of reactors for coupling OCM and FTS, and presents systematic simulation results. FTS section is a combination of fixed bed and membrane fluidized bed reactor, and feed of the FT reactor is supplied by OCM. The reactor configuration is compared with the consecutive reactors of OCM and one fixed bed FT reactor. Effects of CH4/O2 ratio, percent of N2 in the feed, contact time, and input temperature on the yield of ethylene and valuable hydrocarbons are studied. The results show that compared with one FTS reactor configuration, the dual FTS reactor configuration is more effective and thus gives much higher product yields. Furthermore, a main decrease is observed in the formation of CO2 and CH4.

        Retention and stability of bioactive compounds in functional peach beverage using pasteurization, microwave and ultrasound technologies

        The peach functional beverages pasteurized for10 min at 90 C, microwaved for 1.5 min at 850 W ofpower and sonicated for 90 min at 20 kHz of frequencywere selected to keep in storage for up to 30 days inrefrigerator to examine the changes happened to theirphysicochemical characteristics and functional components. It was observed that the pH and the cloud values ofall processed juice samples reduces with the storage time,whereas, the total soluble solids almost remain consistentparticularly in microwave and ultrasound treated samples. While storage period causes the decrement in total phenoliccontent (TPC) and total flavonoid content of treated beveragesamples, but ultrasound processing showed greaterretention of TPC value up to 5.7% more than other techniquesduring storage. The similar trend was observed forantioxidant activity where the ultrasound treatment showedimproved free radicals (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and2,20-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)scavenging activities except ferric ion reducing antioxidantpower after 30 days of storage.

      • A concurrent dual-band low noise amplifier for 2.4 and 5.2 GHz applications

        This paper presents the design of a concurrent dualband low noise amplifier (LNA) targeted forW-LAN IEEE 802.11 a/b/g standards using 0.13-m CMOS process. Cascode common source inductive degeneration power-constrained simultaneous noise and input matching (PCSNIM) topology is adopted to attain simultaneous forward gain and impedance matching at 2.4 and 5.2 GHz. LNA exhibits the forward gain of 18.4 dB, input reflection coefficient of -15.9 dB and the noise figure of 3.42 dB at 2.4 GHz. On the other hand, the LNA at 5.2 GHz exhibits the forward gain of 17.1 dB, input reflection coefficient of -19.2 dB and the noise figure of 3.22 dB. The LNA dissipates 2.42 mW of power at a voltage supply of 1.2 V.
