(Re)Narrating the History through Ambiguous Gender Discourse: A Study of Salman Rushdie`s Shalimar the Clown

        ( Rajni Singh ) 한국영어영문학회 2015 영어 영문학 Vol.61 No.3

Salman Rushdie’s depiction of women is an area of much contention as critics down the ages have observed a strange ambiguous attitude that is central to his portrayal of women characters in his novels which makes Gayatri Spivak to observe that Rushdie’s “anxiety” to construct women in the history is an “honourable failure.” Although he portrays strong female characters, however, they are all peripheral to the plot and their actions have hardly any influence over the principal male characters of his novels. The present paper strives to analyze Rushdie’s attitude to the woman question with special reference to Shalimar the Clown as he revolts against the conventional phallocentric construction of gender as well as the religious fundamentalism that considers woman as the evil incarnate. His creation of unflinching and uncompromising women like Bhoomi/Boonyi Kaul, India/Kashmira, Firdaus Noman who defied the societal constrictions in achieving their own demands is intertwined with his aim of postcolonial historiography in construction of the history of the small village of Pachigam. A saga of rivalry and revenge over the sexual possession of a beautiful woman is interwoven with the territorial dispute of Kashmir, Rushdie’s cherished homeland. The loss of geographical paradise (Kashmir) is symbolically blended with women’s loss of autonomy and freedom. The paper aims at interrogating Rushdie’s (proto) feminist stance as on the one hand his sharp ironic tone undermines the prevalent gender discourse and on the other there is a strain of quiet submission to it.

Effect of dentin biomodifiers on the immediate and long-term bond strengths of a simplified etch and rinse adhesive to dentin

Singh, Payal,Nagpal, Rajni,Singh, Udai Pratap The Korean Academy of Conservative Dentistry 2017 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.42 No.3

Objectives: This in vitro study evaluated the effect of dentin biomodifiers on the immediate and long-term bond strengths of a simplified etch and rinse adhesive to dentin. Materials and Methods: Flat coronal dentin surfaces were prepared in 120 extracted human molars. Teeth were randomly divided into 5 groups (n = 24) according to 5 different surface pre-treatments: No pre-treatment (control); 1M carbodiimide (EDC); 0.1% epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG); 2% minocycline (MI); 10% sodium ascorbate (SA). After surface pre-treatment, adhesive (Adper Single Bond 2 [SB], 3M ESPE) was applied. Composite was applied into transparent plastic tubes (2.5 mm in diameter), which was placed over the bonded dentin surface. From each group, 10 samples were subjected to shear bond strength (SBS) evaluation at 24 hours (immediate) and remaining 10 samples were tested after 6 months (delayed). Additionally, 4 samples per group were subjected to scanning electron microscopic analysis for observation of resin-dentin interface. The data were statistically analysed with Shaperio-Wilk W test, 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and post hoc Tukey's test. Results: At 24 hours, SBS of all surface pre-treatment groups were comparable with the control group, with significant differences found between EDC and SA groups only (p = 0.009). After 6 months storage, EDC, EGCG, and MI pre-treatments preserved the resindentin bond strength with no significant fall. Conclusions: Dentin pre-treatment with all the dentin biomodifiers except SA resulted in significant preservation of resin-dentin bond over 6 months storage period, without negatively affecting the immediate bond strength of the etch and rinse adhesive tested.

Synergistic Effect of Reductase and Keratinase for Facile Synthesis of Protein-Coated Gold Nanoparticles

        ( Sonali Gupta ),( Surinder P. Singh ),( Rajni Singh ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2015 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.25 No.5

We have synthesized gold nanoparticles (GNPs) using chicken feathers (poultry waste) and Bacillus subtilis RSE163. Disulfide reductase and keratinase produced by Bacillus subtilis during the degradation of chicken feather has been used to reduce Au3+ from HAuCl4 precursor to produce gold nanoparticles. The synthesized biogenic GNPs were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and zeta potential measurements. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy indicated the presence of protein capping on synthesized GNPs, imparting multifunctionality to the GNP surface. Furthermore, the nontoxic nature of biogenic GNPs was insured by interaction with Escherichia coli (ATCC11103), where TEM images and enhancement of growth rate of E. coli in log phase signified their nontoxic nature. The results indicate that the synthesis of biocompatible GNPs using poultry waste may find potential applications in drug delivery and sensing.

Deriving stable tropical gynoecious inbred lines of slicing cucumber from American pickling cucumber using MABB

        Tusar Kanti Behera,G. Boopalakrishnan,Gograj Singh Jat,Anilabha Das Munshi,Harshwardhan Choudhary,Amarnath Ravindran,Shilpi Kumari,Rajni Kumari 한국원예학회 2022 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.63 No.2

This study was conducted to develop inbred backcross lines (IBLs) in Indian slicing cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L.) with the gynoecious trait. The F 2 mapping population was developed using the Indian monoecious cultivar of light-green-fruited Pusa Uday as the recurrent parent and the American gynoecious pickling line G421 as a donor. Two markers, SSR13251 and SSR15516, were found to be closely linked to the F locus at 1.5 and 4.5 cM, respectively, by marker analysis of F 2 individuals. The amplifi ed product of 430 bp generated using a SCAR marker ( CsACS1G ) in gynoecious ( MMFF ) and sub-gynoecious ( MMFf ) plants of the F 2 population confirmed the dominance of F alleles. The IBLs were developed by backcrossing Pusa Uday with BC 1 and BC 2 progenies followed by foreground and background selection of plants displaying the gynoecious habit in the background of Indian slicing cucumber. These IBLs could be utilized for the development of hybrids with higher yield, earliness, and quality.

Quantitative histology-based classification system for assessment of the intestinal mucosal histological changes in patients with celiac disease

        Prasenjit Das,Gaurav PS Gahlot,Alka Singh,Vandana Baloda,Ramakant Rawat,Anil K Verma,Gaurav Khanna,Maitrayee Roy,Archana George,Ashok Singh,Aasma Nalwa,Prashant Ramteke,Rajni Yadav,Vineet Ahuja,Vishnu 대한장연구학회 2019 Intestinal Research Vol.17 No.3

Background/Aims: The existing histological classifications for the interpretation of small intestinal biopsies are based on qualitative parameters with high intraobserver and interobserver variations. We have developed and propose a quantitative histological classification system for the assessment of intestinal mucosal biopsies. Methods: We performed a computer-assisted quantitative histological assessment of digital images of duodenal biopsies from 137 controls and 124 patients with celiac disease (CeD) (derivation cohort). From the receiver-operating curve analysis, followed by multivariate and logistic regression analyses, we identified parameters for differentiating control biopsies from those of the patients with CeD. We repeated the quantitative histological analysis in a validation cohort (105 controls and 120 patients with CeD). On the basis of the results, we propose a quantitative histological classification system. The new classification was compared with the existing histological classifications for interobserver and intraobserver agreements by a group of qualified pathologists. Results: Among the histological parameters, intraepithelial lymphocyte count of ≥25/100 epithelial cells, adjusted villous height fold change of ≤0.7, and crypt depth-to-villous height ratio of ≥0.5 showed good discriminative power between the mucosal biopsies from the patients with CeD and those from the controls, with 90.3% sensitivity, 93.5% specificity, and 96.2% area under the curve. Among the existing histological classifications, our quantitative histological classification showed the highest intraobserver (69.7%–85.03%) and interobserver (24.6%–71.5%) agreements. Conclusions: Quantitative assessment increases the reliability of the histological assessment of mucosal biopsies in patients with CeD. Such a classification system may be used for clinical trials in patients with CeD.
