Mechanical Properties and Microstructural Behaviour of Microwave Sintered WC–Co

        Raihan Rumman,Lee C. Chuan,Jamie S. Quinton,Reza Ghomashchi 대한금속·재료학회 2020 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.26 No.6

Cemented carbides have been of great interest within industrially manufacturable hard materials for their mechanical properties. Microwave sintering is known for its application on a range of hard materials. Although it has been widely used, its effecton grain growth of materials still requires clear understanding. Three different types of particle size, ranging from 1–3 μmto 100 nm were used for microwave sintering where temperature was used in this study within the range of 1000–1400 °C,while pressure during initial compaction of powder particles was kept constant. The maximum hardness was observedin the order of nearly 1800 Hv for submicron samples, sintered at 1250 °C. Fracture toughness on the samples reached amaximum of 16 MPa √m for micron samples sintered at 1400 °C. Grain growth in all samples was not more than 1–3 μm,even without the presence of any commercial grain growth inhibitors as part of the composition. Line scanning betweengrains demonstrates the presence of homogenous Co, confirming good mechanical behaviour. The microstructural featuresassociated to the sintering process have also been focused as part of the study, highlighting some challenges in the research.

Road dust and its effect on human health: a literature review

        Raihan K. Khan,Mark A. Strand 한국역학회 2018 Epidemiology and Health Vol.40 No.-

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of road dust on human health. A PubMed search was used to extract references that included the words “road dust” and “health” or “fugitive dust” and “health” in the title or abstract. A total of 46 references were extracted and selected for review after the primary screening of 949 articles. The respiratory system was found to be the most affected system in the human body. Lead, platinum-group elements (platinum, rhodium, and bohrium), aluminum, zinc, vanadium, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were the components of road dust that were most frequently referenced in the articles reviewed. Road dust was found to have harmful effects on the human body, especially on the respiratory system. To determine the complex mechanism of action of various components of road dust on the human body and the results thereof, the authors recommend a further meta-analysis and extensive risk-assessment research into the health impacts of dust exposure.

Antioxidant and anticancer effect of methanolic extract of Aerva lanata Linn. against Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC) in vivo

        Raihan, Obayed,Brishti, Afrina,Bahar, Entaz,Islam, Forhadul,Rahman, Mominur,Tareq, Syed Mohammed,Hossain, Md. Aslam 경희한의학연구센터 2012 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.12 No.3

The present study was conducted to demonstrate the antioxidant and anticancer effects of methanol extract of the aerial parts of Aerva lanata Linn. In vitro antioxidant potentiality was tested using DPPH radical scavenging test, total phenol and flavonoid content and reducing power determination assays. The extracts showed moderate antioxidant activity in a dose dependentmanner. In vivo anticancer activity was studied against Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC) cells in Swiss albino mice by monitoring parameters like tumor weight measurement, survival time and tumor cell growth inhibition. It has been found that the compound at the dose of 40 mg/kg/day (i.p) significantly decreases tumor weight, increases life span and reduces tumor cell growth rate in comparison to those of EAC bearing mice receiving no extract. These results suggest that methanol extract of the aerial parts of Aerva lanata could be a source of natural anticancer and antioxidant compounds. In vitro cytotoxicity of the same extract was also assessed to link the finding with the potent anticancer activity of the experimental extract ($LC_{50}$ less than 50 ${\mu}g/ml$).

Ownership Structure and Firm Performance: Evidence from Pharmaceutical and Chemical Industry of Bangladesh

Raihan SOBHAN 한국유통과학회 2022 Asian Journal of Business Environment (AJBE) Vol.12 No.4

Purpose: The main purpose of this study is to find out the impact of ownership structure on firm performance in the pharmaceutical and chemical industry of Bangladesh. Research design, data and methodology: The study has been conducted on 28 listed pharmaceutical and chemical companies from 2012 to 2020. Return on Assets (ROA) and Tobin’s Q are selected as indicators of internal and market performance of the firms respectively whereas institutional ownership, directors’ ownership and foreign ownership are selected as proxies of ownership structure. Panel analysis using random effects, lag method and time dummy method is used to analyse the relationship. Results: The study has found the existence of highly concentrated directors’ ownership, a low percentage of institutional ownership and a very insignificant proportion of foreign ownership in the industry. The regression results show that directors’ ownership has a positive and significant impact on firm performance, supporting the concept of agency theory. The study has also found a positive and significant impact of foreign ownership on firm performance. Unfortunately, the impact of institutional ownership is found to be insignificant. Conclusions: Directors’ ownership and foreign ownership decreases agency cost that ultimately increases firm performance. However, the role of institutional investors is not significant enough to improve firm performance. It is suggested that institutional investors should be more active and involved in monitoring the activities of the organisations to improve performance.
