Attitude towards problem-based learning and its relationship with locus of control and academic self-concept among medical students

Mona Mohamed Ibrahim Abdalla,Mahmoud Said Abdelal,Siew Choo Soon 한국의학교육학회 2019 Korean journal of medical education Vol.31 No.1

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the degree of acceptance of problem-based learning (PBL) among phase one medical students and its association with academic self-concept (ASC) and internal locus of control (ILOC). Methods: A 5-point Likert scale valid and reliable questionnaire assessing the attitude towards PBL, ASC, and ILOC was given to phase one medical students at MAHSA University. Data were analysed using IBM SPSS ver. 22.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, USA). Results: Out of 255 participants, there were 84 males and 171 females, 175 Malaysians and 80 non-Malaysians. The results showed an overall acceptance of PBL with a mean of 3.7±0.07, ASC of 3.5±0.05 and ILOC of 2.9±0.05. Females showed a higher significant acceptance of PBL, ASC, and ILOC as compared with males. There was no difference between Malaysians and non-Malaysians in any of the variables measured. Simple regression analysis revealed a significant predictive effect of acceptance of PBL on ASC and ILOC (r=0.44 and r=0.88, respectively). Conclusion: The higher the acceptance of PBL among students, the higher is the ASC and ILOC. This reflects the importance of PBL as a teaching method as well as the importance of increasing the level of appreciation of PBL amongst students.

Synergistic impact of multiwalled carbon nanotubes on the properties of Ni-Mo thin-film via electrodeposition technique

Mona Hasan Gomaa,Zeinab Abdel Hamid,Magdy Ahmed Mahmoud Ibrahim,Rania Abd El Sttar,El-Said Helmy El- Mosallamy 한국화학공학회 2023 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.40 No.5

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are the hardest and strongest materials due to their perfect mechanical properties and excellent chemical, electrical, and thermal characteristics. Therefore, CNTs are attractive candidates for the development of innovative multifunctional nanocomposites. The goal of the study was to synthesize and characterize NiMoCNT nanocomposite coatings onto steel substrates by electrodeposition technique to enhance the properties of the NiMo layer coating. The electrodeposition was carried out galvanostatically, and the percentage of MWCNT (wt%) in the composites was investigated under various working circumstances, including current density, pH, temperature, and CNTs concentration in the electroplating bath. Different techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDS), were used for the composite characterization. Moreover, the corrosion resistance and the nanocomposites’ mechanical characteristics were investigated. The results of the NiMo alloy show that the enhancement in current density decreases the Mo content from 41.8 wt% (at 3.5×10−2 Acm−2) to 31.06 wt% (at 6.5×10−2 Acm−2). On the other hand, the results proved that as the concentration of CNTs in the bath increases, the wt% of CNTs co-deposited in the NiMo matrix enhances, peaking at 22.36 wt% at 0.03 gL−1. Furthermore, the findings show that the Mo content of the coating is reduced when CNTs are present. In comparison to a NiMo coating without CNTs, the composite incorporating CNTs exhibits better corrosion resistance. In addition, the mechanical properties show that the microhardness of NiMoCNT composite-coated steel is better than that of NiMo, and the highest microhardness of NiMoCNT composite coated steel was 4.69 GPa, while pure NiMo coated steel had a microhardness of 2.37 GPa.

Obesity may be erythropoietin dose-saving in hemodialysis patients

        ( Ghada M. El-kannishy ),( Abir F. Megahed ),( Mona M. Tawfik ),( Ghada El-said ),( Rabab T. Zakaria ),( Nahed A. Mohamed ),( Eman M. Taha ),( Alzhraa A. Ammar ),( Abeer M. Abd Eltawab ),( Nagy A. Say 대한신장학회 2018 Kidney Research and Clinical Practice Vol.37 No.2

Background: In dialysis patients, the obesity-survival paradox still requires an explanation. Anemia and high doses of erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs) are associated with worse outcomes in the hemodialysis (HD) population. In the present study, we explored the relation between obesity and anemia control in a sample of maintenance HD patients in Egypt. Methods: This multicenter observational study included 733 patients on maintenance HD from 9 hemodialysis centers in Egypt. Clinical and laboratory data as well as average doses of ESAs and parenteral iron were recorded. The erythropoietin resistance index (ERI) was calculated. Results: Obesity, defined as a body mass index (BMI) ≥ 30 kg/m2, was present in 22.6% of the studied population. The target hemoglobin level (10.0-11.5 g/dL) was achieved in 27.3% of non-obese and 25.3% of obese patients, with no significant difference. The median serum ferritin and the values of transferrin saturation index did not differ significantly between these two groups. The weekly ESA dose was significantly lower in obese than in non-obese patients (P = 0.0001). A trend toward higher ESA doses and ERI values was observed in patients with lower BMIs (P < 0.0001). Multiple linear regression revealed that the BMI and urea reduction ratio were the strongest predictors of the ERI. Conclusion: Our study adds more evidence to obesity-associated advantages in HD patients. BMI may determine ESA response, with better responses observed in patients with higher BMIs.

Thermo-mechanical properties of devulcanized rubber/high crystalline polypropylene blends modified by ionizing radiation

        Medhat M. Hassan,Nagwa A. Badway,Mona Y. Elnaggar,El-Sayed A. Hegazy 한국공업화학회 2013 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.19 No.4

Ground tire rubber (GRT) poses a challenging environmental, economical, and disposal problem in the world because of their crosslinked three-dimensional network structure. Waste rubber from end-of-life passenger car tires was successfully devulcanized by using mechanical–chemical process. The coupling of DR with PP in different proportion was investigated by FTIR, X-ray diffraction and SEM techniques. The mechanical and thermal behaviors of the blends composed of devulcanized rubber (DR) and high crystalline polypropylene (PP) in different proportions were studied. Evaluation of the mechanical and thermal properties of the developed blends, unirradiated and gamma irradiated, was carried out using tensile strength (Ts), elongation at break (Eb), hardness, TGA and DSC measurements.

New features in the migration-trade nexus: Historical country ties, profile of migrants and social integration effects

Andres Artal-Tur,Vicente Pallardó-Lopez,Mona Said 한양대학교 경제연구소 2020 JOURNAL OF ECONOMIC RESEARCH Vol.25 No.1

The arrival of immigrants can help to improve the economy of host countries, for example, by creating new trade flows. In this paper, we introduce new features in the analysis of the migration-trade nexus that modulate traditional results in the literature. First, we test if historical migration corridors between countries influence the size of related trade effects. Second, we investigate the role of migrants´ profile in this process, including their level of education, language proficiency, and professional background. Third, we analyse how social integration of immigrants shape results of the model, according to their length of stay at receiving countries, their age at arrival, and their acquisition of citizenship. The research employs gravity equations with panel data, using France as an illustrative case study. Results help to provide several policy recommendations.

Al-Attas, Safia Ali,Ibrahim, Suzan Seif,Amer, Hala Abbas,Darwish, Zeinab El-Said,Hassan, Mona Hassan Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.2

Smoking is recognized as a health problem worldwide and there is an established tobacco epidemic in Saudi Arabia as in many other countries, with tobacco users at increased risk of developing many diseases. This cross sectional study was conducted to assess the prevalence of oral mucosal, potentially malignant or malignant, lesions associated with tobacco use among a stratified cluster sample of adults in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. A sample size of 599 was collected and each participant underwent clinical conventional oral examination and filled a questionnaire providing information on demographics, tobacco use and other relevant habits. The most common form of tobacco used was cigarette smoking (65.6 %) followed by Shisha or Moasel (38.1%), while chewing tobacco, betel nuts and gat accounted for 21-2%, 7.7%, and 5% respectively. A high prevalence (88.8%) of soft tissue lesions was found among the tobacco users examined, and a wide range of lesions were detected, about 50% having hairy tongue, 36% smoker's melanosis, 28.9% stomatitis nicotina, 27% frictional keratosis, 26.7% fissured tongue, 26% gingival or periodontal inflammation and finally 20% leukodema. Suspicious potentially malignant lesions affected 10.5% of the subjects, most prevalent being keratosis (6.3%), leukoplakia (2.3%), erythroplakia (0.7%), oral submucous fibrosis (0.5%) and lichenoid lesions (0.4%), these being associated with male gender, lower level of education, presence of diabetes and a chewing tobacco habit. It is concluded that smoking was associated with a wide range of oral mucosal lesions, those suspicious for malignancy being linked with chewable forms, indicating serious effects.
