        Chromosome numbers and meiotic behavior in some species of Asteraceae from high altitudinal regions of Kashmir Himalayas

        Disparity or continuity in the chromosome count within taxa of various categories has been verified to bean imperative character for taxonomic classification. Male meiotic studies in 64 species (161 accessions)of composits from geographically isolated regions were examined in detail in order to update the existingknowledge of meiotic chromosome numbers of composits from the outer part of the Himalayas. Myriactisjavanica (2n ¼ 36) and Tanacetum nubigenum (2n ¼ 36) have been counted chromosomally for the firsttime at the world level. Besides, Koelpinia linearis (2n ¼ 36), Ajania fruticulosa (2n ¼ 18), Crepis flexuosa(2n ¼ 14), and Tanacetum gracile (2n ¼ 18) have been analyzed chromosomally for the first time fromIndia. New intraspecific diploid/polyploid cytotypes are added for Artemisia desertorum (2n ¼ 6x ¼ 54),Carduus nutans (2n ¼ 4x ¼ 16), Erigeron annuus (2n ¼ 2x ¼ 18), Leontopodium jacotianum (2n ¼ 4x ¼ 48),Pentanema indicum (2n ¼ 6x ¼ 54), Scorzonera virgata (2n ¼ 2x ¼ 16), and Tragopogon pratensis(2n ¼ 2x ¼ 12). Besides, eight species have been evaluated cytologically for the first time from KashmirHimalayas. Various meiotic abnormalities like cytomixis, structural heterozygosity, chromatin stickiness,nonsynchronous disjunction, laggards, bridges, unoriented chromosomes leading to pollen sterility havebeen observed for the first time in some species. The presence of B-chromosomes has been detected inAchillea millefolium (2n ¼ 18þ0-1B) and Saussurea candolleana (2n ¼ 26þ0-1B). Among meioticallyanalyzed species, diploids (76.5%) and polyploids (23.5%) prevail.

        Enhanced Water Flux by Fabrication of Polysulfone/Alumina Nanocomposite Membrane for Copper(II) Removal

        In the current study, polysulfone (PSF) membranes incorporated with nano alumina (Al2O3) were synthesized by a phase inversion method to improve the efficiency of the PSF membrane for wastewater treatment. Dimethylformamide was used as solvent while polyvinylpyrrolidone was used as a pore former. Different concentrations of nanoparticles of Al2O3 were used in the casting solution to get an optimum condition for the highest water flux. Cross section morphology of the membranes was investigated through scanning electron microscope. Membranes were characterized by pure water flux, permeability, hydrophilicity, porosity, and retention of Cu(II). All the mixed matrix nanocomposite membranes showed higher water flux than the nascent PSF membrane due to their increased porosity and hydrophilicity with the addition of nano alumina. Cu(II) rejection was also enriched by composite membranes due to a high number of adsorption sites on membranes surface as a result of better hydrophilicity and dispersion of nano alumina. The membrane with 0.1 wt% nano Al2O3showed the best performance in terms of water flux (32.60 L·m-2·h-1) and significant Cu(II) removal (61.95%) compared to other membranes after continuous treatment of 150 min. The reusability test of the PAl0.1 membrane confirmed the durability of the composite membranes after several cycles using ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid as a regenerator.

        Regulating surface-pore structure of PES UF membrane by addition of ‘‘active” nano-CaCO3

        A small surface-pore ultrafiltration membrane with a high surface porosity was fabricated from a polyethersulfone (PES) dope solution containing a small quantity of CaCO3 nanoparticles (nano-CaCO3),which coagulated in dilute HCl solution. During membrane formation, CO2 nanobubbles were in-situ generatedto delay phase inversion, which ameliorated the membrane structure and performance becauseCO2 nanobubbles are amphiphobic to water and solvent. With increasing nano-CaCO3 content (from 0to 0.15%) in the dope solution, the surface porosity and the surface-pore density of the obtained PESUF membrane were markedly increased from 1.76 to 6.50% and from 8.31 1014 to 5.08 1015 m2,respectively. Nonetheless, the surface-pore size decreased from 13.35 to 8.29 nm, and so as the distribution. The optimal membrane exhibited a high pure water flux (698.2 Lm2h1) and a high rejection tobovine serum album (>99%) with a moderate anti-fouling ability. This work would be of great significancefor precision separation in biopharmaceutical, food processing, and other related applications.

        Experimental investigation of polysulfone modified cellulose acetate membrane for CO2/H2 gas separation

        Processed gas streams from the water gas shift reactor (WGSR) are enriched with CO2 and H2. Purification of H2 from CO2 for different applications is required because of its environmental and economic benefits. Among different separation technologies, membrane technology gets much attention due to its various advantages. In this work, cellulose acetate/polysulfone blended membranes were fabricated via solution casting method for CO2/H2 separation. The separation performance of pure CA membrane was enhanced by addition of PSF. The fabricated membranes were analyzed through various characterization techniques, such as FTIR, SEM, DSC, and XRD. Gas permeation results show that permeability of CO2 increased with increasing concentration of PSF. Notable permeability (P=80.51 Barrer) of CO2 and selectivity of CO2/H2=1.83 of CA/PSF 2wt% were achieved at 25 oC and 2.5 bar compared to pure CA membrane. To the best of our knowledge, this blend has been studied for the first time for gas separation, prepared through the solution casting method.
