Effect of Fiber Orientation on the Fatigue Behavior of Steel Fiber-Reinforced Concrete Specimens by Performing Wedge Splitting Tests and Computed Tomography Scanning

        Dorys C. González,Álvaro Mena-Alonso,Jesús Mínguez,José A. Martínez,Miguel A. Vicente 한국콘크리트학회 2024 International Journal of Concrete Structures and M Vol.18 No.2

This paper shows the relationship, in steel fiber-reinforced concrete, between fiber orientation and fatigue response through the combined use of computed tomography (CT), digital image processing (DIP) software and wedge splitting test (WST). The WST cubes were extracted from conventional 150 × 150× 600 concrete prisms and a groove and notch were carved on different faces in such a way that in half of the test specimens the fibers are oriented mostly perpendicular to the breaking surface and, in the other half, the fibers are mostly oriented parallel to the breaking surface. Fiber orientation was obtained using a CT device and DIP software from a miniprism extracted from the previously mentioned concrete prisms. The results show that there is a strong correlation between the crack-sewing fiber orientation on the one hand and fatigue life and crack opening rate per cycle on the other hand. Cubes with a higher percentage of fibers perpendicular to the crack surface (i.e., with a higher efficiency index) show a longer fatigue life and a lower crack opening rate per cycle, while cubes with a lower efficiency index show a shorter fatigue life and a higher crack opening rate per cycle.

Diversity of Fungi in Soils with Different Degrees of Degradation in Germany and Panama

        ( Miguel Rosas-medina ),( Jose G. Maci_a-vicente ),( Meike Piepenbring ) 한국균학회 2020 Mycobiology Vol.48 No.1

Soil degradation can have an impact on the soil microbiota, but its specific effects on soil fungal communities are poorly understood. In this work, we studied the impact of soil degradation on the richness and diversity of communities of soil fungi, including three different degrees of degradation in Germany and Panama. Soil fungi were isolated monthly using the soil-sprinkling method for 8 months in Germany and 3 months in Panama, and characterized by morphological and molecular data. Soil physico-chemical properties were measured and correlated with the observed values of fungal diversity. We isolated a total of 71 fungal species, 47 from Germany, and 32 from Panama. Soil properties were not associated with fungal richness, diversity, or composition in soils, with the exception of soil compaction in Germany. The geographic location was a strong determinant of the soil fungal species composition although in both countries there was dominance by members of the orders Eurotiales and Hypocreales. In conclusion, the results of this work do not show any evident influence of soil degradation on communities of soil fungi in Germany or Panama.

Long-term evolution of continence and quality of life after sphincteroplasty for obstetric fecal incontinence

        Vicente Pla-Martí,Jose Martín-Arévalo,Rosa Martí-Fernández,David Moro-Valdezate,Stephanie García-Botello,Alejandro Espí-Macías,Miguel Mínguez-Pérez,Maria Dolores Ruiz-Carmona,Jose Vicente Roig-Vila 대한대장항문학회 2022 Annals of Coloproctolgy Vol.38 No.1

Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the long-term evolution of continence and patient’s quality of life after surgical treatment for obstetric fecal incontinence. Methods: A prospective longitudinal study was conducted including consecutive patients who underwent sphincteroplasty for severe obstetric fecal incontinence. The first phase analyzed changes in continence and impact on quality of life. The second phase studied the long-term evolution reevaluating the same group of patients 6 years later. Degree of fecal incontinence was calculated using the Cleveland Clinic Score (CCS). Quality of life assessment was carried out with the Fecal Incontinence Quality of Life scale. Results: Thirty-five patients with median age of 55 years (range, 28 to 73 years) completed the study. Phase 1 results: after a postoperative follow-up of 30 months (4 to 132 months), CCS had improved significantly from a preoperative of 15.7±3.1 to 6.1±5.0 (P<0.001). Phase 2 results: median follow-up in phase 2 was 110 months (76 to 204 months). The CCS lowered to 8.4±4.9 (P=0.04). There were no significant differences between phases 1 and 2 in terms of quality of life; lifestyle (3.47± 0.75 vs. 3.16±1.04), coping/behavior (3.13±0.83 vs. 2.80±1.09), depression/self-perception (3.65±0.80 vs. 3.32± 0.98), and embarrassment (3.32±0.90 vs. 3.12±1.00). Conclusion: Sphincteroplasty offers good short-medium term outcomes in continence and quality of life for obstetric fecal incontinence treatment. Functional clinical results deteriorate over time but did not impact on patients’ quality of life.

Stepped Propane Adsorption in Pure-Silica ITW Zeolite

        Min, Jung Gi,Luna-Triguero, Azahara,Byun, Youngchul,Balestra, Salvador R. G.,Vicent-Luna, Jose Manuel,Calero, Sofia,Hong, Suk Bong,Camblor, Miguel A. American Chemical Society 2018 Langmuir Vol.34 No.16

Gas adsorption over zeolites is at the basis of important applications of this class of microporous crystalline solids, notably as separation media and catalysts, but it may also be complex and not straightforward to understand. Here we report that for temperature below 323 K propane adsorption on the small-pore pure-silica zeolite ITW exhibits a clear step (pseudosaturation). This is absent in the case of propene and the other small linear alkanes. An intermediate plateau, clearly observed in the 293 K isotherm, always occurs when one molecule of propane is loaded in every other cage, i.e., at half-saturation. The simulation results show a swelling of the ITW structure upon propane adsorption. The strong dependence of available pore volume on the adsorbate loading level implies that adsorption cannot occur on the void structure while saturation can only be reached on highly loaded structures. To account for this unprecedented adsorption phenomenon, we propose the term “guest-modulated effect”.
[FIG OMISSION]
