The Role of News Media Literacy in Predicting News Personalization and News Engagement

        Md. Vol.34 No.1

This study underscores the implication of news media literacy (NML) on news personalization and news engagement in online environment. Borrowing Mihailidis’s model of media literacy in the context of news media, it examines how different components of NML predict individual’s news curation, news selection preferences, and their news engagement. Data was collected from a total of 601 respondents using an internet based nationwide survey in South Korea. Results show that news consumers’ perceived ability of appreciation and their self-perceived media literacy (SPML) have strong relation with news curation, and news selection via algorithmic, journalistic, friends’ recommendation and amateur. On top of this, perceived importance of ubiquitous accessibility to news media and the SPML are positively associated with news engagement. However, people who embraced with critical understanding (e.g., awareness) of news media are more likely to control their news engagement in digital media platform. The findings will add a new insight considering the potential role of NML into the implication of future news engagement.

Vol.31 No.1

This study aimed to examine the relationships of news use behaviors to individual’s motivations to use news via Facebook, news media habits, and digital media literacy in a sample of Bangladeshi adults where Facebook has evolved as a vibrant platform with unprecedented popularity. Based on a quantitative approach, a survey questionnaire was administered to 300 adult Facebook users in Dhaka city of Bangladesh. This study found four distinctive SNS news use behaviors (i.e., checking, reading, posting, and endorsing) particularly for Facebook users that were not only associated with participants’ motives based on the demand-supply basis, but rather complemented by the habitual use of media, digital media skills, and content literacy. Despite the exploratory nature of this study, explaining various ways of how social media influence the pattern of news consumption and people’s news related behaviors offers a new understanding of the new media. It also provides future areas for studying the consequences of multidimensional news use on Facebook. The findings contribute new interpretation to news consumption pattern in the new media environment where digital media literacy skills facilitate people to be more engaged with news use behaviors.

Mobile News Engagement in a South Asian Context: Roles of Demographics, Motivations, and News Type Preferences in News Exposure and Participation in Bangladesh

Alam, Md. Asraful,Kim, Kyun Soo The Korea Contents Association 2021 International Journal of Contents Vol.17 No.2

This study examines mobile news engagement-conceptualized as news exposure and participation-in the context of South Asia which has experienced tremendous growth in mobile-Internet users without receiving much attention from communication scholars. Along with demographic characteristics, this research incorporates motivational factors (grounded on uses and gratifications-U&G-approach) and news type preferences to explore their roles in mobile news engagement among urban citizens in Bangladesh. Results of a self-administered survey (N = 504) revealed that participants' mobile news engagement partially varied depending on their demographic differences, particularly gender, age, and education. Our study also unveiled that individuals' motivation for sharing information seemed to be a strong predictor of mobile news exposure and participation. In addition, Bangladeshi respondents were more likely to be interested in the hard news in terms of expressing views on news comments and sharing news via mobile platform. Conversely, preference for soft type news had a significant influence on news exposure through mobile browsing. This study provides insights into the understanding of global phenomena of mobile news engagement by unpacking the case of Bangladesh where mobile news usage seems to be an evolving state.

Relationships between Online Users’ Perceived Journalistic Roles and News Engagement : The Moderating Role of Credibility

Md. 2018 Asian Communication Research Vol.15 No.3

While online news media have shown considerable growth, little is known about how online users’ journalistic role conceptions and perceived credibility of journalistic contents exert influences on their news engagement. Thereby, this study aims to investigate the role of credibility of online news by elucidating its interaction effects on the relationship between journalistic role conceptions and news engagement. Results based on a web-based survey data with the South Korean sample (N = 601) show that the civic facilitating and supporting roles of journalists positively and significantly predict online users’ news engagement. Besides, perceived credibility has a strong association with participants’ news exposure and participatory news use in digital media platforms. On top of this, credibility judgment significantly moderates the strength of the relationship between news users’ perception of journalistic roles and news engagement. We discuss the probable implications of the findings.

Vol.29 No.4

This study focuses on news consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for news by predicting its potential relations with various dimensions of news media literacy (NML) and news verification intention (NVI), based on an online survey among South Korean adults (N = 601). The findings demonstrate that individuals’ appreciation of the roles of news media in society has a significant and positive association with news users’ WTP. However, critical awareness shows a negative connection with the WTP for news. Additionally, the results reveal that almost all dimensions of NML strongly predict individuals’ NVI. Furthermore, users’ NVI helps strengthen the relationships between the two specific dimensions of awareness and appreciation of NML and the WTP for news. The implications of the findings are discussed.

Optimization of algal lipid extraction by mixture of ethyl acetate and ethanol via response surface methodology for biodiesel production

        Zhong-Ming Wang,Weidong Lu,Md Asraful Alam,Ying Pan,William Junior Nock,Zhen-Hong Yuan 한국화학공학회 2016 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.33 No.9

The effects of extraction time, extraction temperature, solvent to biomass ratio and solvent composition on lipid yield from lyophilized Chlorococcum sp. biomass using a mixture of ethyl acetate and ethanol (EAE), a new proposed solvent, were studied. Subsequently, the process conditions of extraction by EAE were optimized using Box- Behnken design (BBD). The results revealed that the extraction temperature had the greatest effect on lipid extraction efficiency, followed by volume ratio of ethyl acetate to ethanol (EA/E) and extraction time. The largest lipid extraction yield of 15.74% was obtained under the following extraction conditions: 40mL solvents per gram of biomass for 270 min with gentle stirring at 80 oC by EAE with an EA/E of 1.0. Furthermore, palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, and linoleic acid were the most abundant fatty acids in the lipids extracted, indicating the great potential of the proposed lipid extraction procedure for microalgae-based biodiesel production.

Screening a Panel of Acid-producing Strains by Developing a High-throughput Method

        Lijuan Zhu,Hui Zhang,Shiyuan Wang,Anqi Zhao,Lingbo Qu,Wenlong Xiong,Md. Asraful Alam,Wenlong Ma,Yongkun Lv,Jingliang Xu 한국생물공학회 2022 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.27 No.5

Organic acids are natural cellular metabolites, which are widely used in food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries. Among them, L-lactic acid is of special interest, because it is widely used in food and pharmaceutical industries and its monopolymer (poly (lactic acid)) is a green, renewable, biodegradable, and biocompatible alternative to the petroleum-based polymers. Currently, organic acids are predominantly produced by microbial fermentation. Their productions have been substantially improved by genetic modifications, metabolic engineering, and fermentation optimizations. However, the commonly used microbial producers still suffer from low acidic tolerance. Screening higher tolerant acid-producing microorganisms from the nature is relatively less explored. The traditional fermented foods are good resources for the screening of acid-producing and probiotic microorganisms. However, they are relatively less explored, especially those foods in developing countries. To speed up the acid-producing microorganism screening, we developed and validated a high-throughput method in this study. By using this method, we screened 1,296 colonies in 4 days and obtained a panel of acid-producing microorganisms. Among them, a Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus showed the potential for organic acid production and probiotics applications.
