Surface Hardening of Titanium Using Gas Nitriding

In this study, a rotary barrel tank was employed with gas nitriding in an attempt to form a hard layer on the surface of pure titanium. Nitriding was carried out at 773 K to 1073 K for 3.6 ks to 32.4 ks. Alumina powders were used as the media that flowed in the barrel tank. A new surface hardening process was developed for forming hard layers on a pure titanium surface. A uniform hard layer could be formed on pure titanium surfaces using barrel nitriding. With barrel nitriding, the treatment time did not have an effect on the surface hardness, but had a strong effect on the depth of the hard layer. Moreover, nitrogen was able to diffuse into titanium surface,and TiN and Ti2N could be formed on the surface using this process.

Angiogenesis is an essential event in a variety of physiological and pathological processes. Therefore, effective inhibition of event is a promising strategy for treating angiogenesis-related diseases, including cancer. The current study investigated two unique bafilomycin-type macrolide inhibitors of angiogenesis, PC-766B' (1) and PC-766B (2). The strain RK97-56 which produced the inhibitors was identified as Nocardia sp. by chemotaxonomic analyses, and the purification of the inhibitors was guided by their anti-angiogenic actives. PC-766B' (1) and PC-766B (2) exhibited potent inhibitory activities towards endothelial cell migration stimulated by the vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF).

Facing the rise of environmental concern drivers on the road are now opting to own a more environmentally-friendly cars This paper introduces a new type of user heterogeneity to a classic two-mode problem;drivers are different in terms of the fuel efficiency of the cars they drive. This paper introduces a new perspective to the classic two-mode problem by adding using user heterogeneity in terms of fuel efficiency of the cars they drive. In the case of the first best, it is confirmed that the anonymity principle still applies in a way that the toll should be the same between these two groups of drivers, equaling to the marginal external costs. Following the first best analysis, the paper investigats the second-best with unpriced city streets. It is shown that the price of a highway trip is now different from its social marginal cost, and that the direction of this deviation from the social marginal cost is opposite depending on the type of the car.

North America, Europe, and Asia are three largest regional blocks in the global aviation. EU has liberalized its aviation market within the region, following the north America. However, Asia is still left behind, and most of the markets in the region are still governed by bilateral air service agreements. This paper shows that, any pair of countries with an exclusive bilateral air-service agreement has no incentive to open their market to the third country; and yet that a comprehensive multilateral air service agreement within the entire region improves the welfare of all countries in the region.
A Comparison of English Proficiency of Korean, Japanese and Chinese High School Students

This paper reports on a comparative study of English proficiency of Korean, Japanese and Chinese high school students, as measured by a standardized test called GTEC for Students. The study involved 4,403 Japanese students, 5,133 Korean students, and 4,236 Chinese students from first and second years, that is, 10th and 11th graders. The results show that Korean students performed better than Japanese and Chinese students in reading and listening. However, the overall mean of the Chinese students was the highest because Koreans scored extremely low on the writing test. The standard deviation of the Korean students was the greatest. When the first- and second-year students were compared in each country, Chinese second-year students scored lower than first-year students. Reversed scores were observed in some sub-skill areas in Korea and Japan as well. Korean and Chinese seem to be more fluent (but not necessarily more accurate) writers than Japanese. Chinese seem to have the largest vocabulary as reflected on the writing test. Implications for education are that comparative studies are beneficial to EFL improvement in East Asia.
