Lineage conversion of mouse fibroblasts to pancreatic α-cells

        Lijian Hui,Liangliang Sun,Beige Jiang,Limei Li,Jin Cen,Xiaotao Chen,Zhaoyun Zhang,Qinghua Wang,Xin Cheng,Yongquan Shi,Lijian Hui 생화학분자생물학회 2017 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.49 No.-

α-cells, which synthesize glucagon, also support β-cell survival and have the capacity to transdifferentiate into β-cells. However, the role of α-cells in pathological conditions and their putative clinical applications remain elusive due in large part to the lack of mature α-cells. Here, we present a new technique to generate functional α-like cells. α-like cells (iAlpha cells) were generated from mouse fibroblasts by transduction of transcription factors, including Hhex, Foxa3, Gata4, Pdx1 and Pax4, which induce α-cell-specific gene expression and glucagon secretion in response to KCl and Arg stimulation. The cell functions in vivo and in vitro were evaluated. Lineage-specific and functional-related gene expression was tested by realtime PCR, insulin tolerance test (ITT), glucose tolerance test (GTT), Ki67 and glucagon immunohistochemistry analysis were done in iAlpha cells transplanted nude mice. iAlpha cells possess α-cell function in vitro and alter blood glucose levels in vivo. Transplantation of iAlpha cells into nude mice resulted in insulin resistance and increased β-cell proliferation. Taken together, we present a novel strategy to generate functional α-like cells for the purposes of disease modeling and regenerative medicine.

      • Is the Mobile Touch Device a Good Tool to Learn Chinese?

( Zhe Chen ),( Bumsuk Kim ),( Philipp Osterwald ),( Da Sun ),( Xuhui Liu ),( Yalong Chen ),( Constantin Siemons ),( Jean Elie Guillaume ),( Shuiping Chen ),( Liangliang Zhang ),( Karl Jesper Ornerud ) 한국감성과학회 2014 춘계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.-

Learning Chinese language becomes increasingly important and popular worldwide. It is a challenge for native alphabetic language speaker to learn Chinese as Chinese is a symbolic language. Various learning methods are used to help foreign students to improve their learning performance. Interactive applications in the mobile touch devices make it possible to learn Chinese anytime anywhere. It is interesting to discover the role of mobile touch devices in Chinese learning. Thus, this study investigated the usability of mobile touch devices, including mobile phones and tablet personal computer, in Chinese learning for foreign students. This study included two phases. In the first phase, an online survey and an after-interview were used to investigate the users`attitude to using mobile touch devices in Chinese learning. Thirty international students were invited to the survey (19 males and 11 females) with 10Germany, 4 French, 3 Italians, 2 Iranian, 2 Russians, 2 English, 2 American, 1 Indonesian, 1 Pakistani, 1 Thai, 1 Swedish and 1 Kazakhstan. In the second phase, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of mobile touch devices in Chinese learning.

High performance proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells with a layered perovskite GdBaCuCoO5+x cathode

        Xiaozhen Zhang,Yuhua Jiang,Xuebing Hu,Liangliang Sun,Yihan Ling 대한금속·재료학회 2018 ELECTRONIC MATERIALS LETTERS Vol.14 No.2

Proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cell (H-SOFC) based on layered perovskite type GdBaCuCoO5+x (GBCC) cathodewas fabricated with in situ drop-coating BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3−δ (BZCY) electrolyte membrane. The influences of Cu dopinginto Co sites of GdBaCo2O5+x on the electrical conductivity and conduction mechanism, thermal expansion propertyand electrochemical performance of cathode materials and corresponding single cell were investigated. Results show thatthe electrical conductivity decreased and the conduction mechanism would gradually transform to the semiconductor-likebehavior. A high maximum power density of 480 mW cm−2 was obtained for the anode supported NiO–BZCY/NiO–BZCY/BZCY/GBCC single cells with wet H2fuel at 700 °C. The corresponding polarization resistance was as low as 0.17 Ω cm2. The excellent electrochemical performance of as-prepared single cell indicates that GBCC is a good candidate of cathodematerials for H-SOFCs.

In the second phase, an experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of mobile touch devices in Chinese learning. Fourteen participants were invited to experiment with 8 international students and 6 Chinese students. International students were considered as beginner learner students compared to Chinese students who were considered as advanced learner. Both Android and iOS developing systems for smart devices are considered in the experiment. The results of the survey showed users have a positive attitude towards using mobile touch devices in Chinese learning. The interview results indicated that most participants were willing to pay for it if the usability of learning tool in mobile devices improves. The experiment results indicated the advantage and disadvantage of using mobile phones and tablets in Chinese learning. It was suggested that beginning leaner regarded motivation and organization of Chinese learning tool in the mobile devices. Advanced learner focused on visual design, touch performance, cognitive process. As an exploration of usability of mobile touch device in Chinese learning, this study found that user held a positive attitude to learning Chinese in mobile touch devices. Mobile touch device is a good tool to learn Chinese as it provides interactive learning tools. However, it needs much effort for the mobile application designer to improve the usability. This study had suggestions on how to develop a user-friendly Chinese learning tool in touch mobile devices.
