The effect of rhinovirus on airway inflammation in a murine asthma model

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to investigate the differences in lower airway inflammatory immune responses, including cellular responses and responses in terms of inflammatory mediators in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and the airway, to rhinovirus (RV) infection on asthma exacerbation by comparing a control and a murine asthma model, with or without RV infection. Methods: BALB/c mice were intraperitoneally injected with a crude extract of Dermatophagoides farinae (Df ) or phosphate buffered saline (PBS) and were subsequently intranasally treated with a crude extract of Df or PBS. Airway responsiveness and cell infiltration, differential cell counts in BALF, and cytokine and chemokine concentrations in BALF were measured 24 hours after intranasal RV1B infection. Results: RV infection increased the enhanced pause (Penh) in both the Df sensitized and challenged mice (Df mice) and PBS-treated mice (PBS mice) (P<0.05). Airway eosinophil infiltration increased in Df mice after RV infection (P<0.05). The levels of interleukin (IL) 13, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and regulated on activation, normal T cells expressed and secreted (RANTES) increased in response to RV infection in Df mice, but not in PBS mice (P<0.05). The level of IL-10 significantly decreased following RV infection in Df mice (P<0.05). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that the augmented induction of proinflammatory cytokines, Th2 cytokines, and chemokines that mediate an eosinophil response and the decreased induction of regulatory cytokines after RV infection may be important manifestations leading to airway inflammation with eosinophil infiltration and changes in airway responsiveness in the asthma model.

Directional regression (DR; Li and Wang, 2007) is well-known as an exhaustive sufficient dimension reduction method, and performs well in complex regression models to have linear and nonlinear trends. However, the extension of DR is not well-done upto date, so we will extend DR to accommodate multivariate regression and large p-small n regression. We propose three versions of DR for multivariate regression and discuss how DR is applicable for the latter regression case. Numerical studies confirm that DR is robust to the number of clusters and the choice of hierarchical-clustering or pooled DR.

최근 정보보안 침해사고가 증가함에 따른 정보보호인력의 업무와 책임부담이 가중되면서, 이들의 사기저하 문제가 사회적으로 제기되고 있다. 이를 해결하기 위하여 정부에서도 다양한 정보보호인력 사기진작방안을 마련하고 있으며, 금융사의 경우 자체적으로 사기진작 계획을 세워 금융위원회에 보고할 것을 요구하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 문헌고찰 및 빈도분석을 통하여 정보보호 분야의 16가지 사기수준 결정 변수를 도출하고, 정보보호인력을 대상으로 사기 진작에 중요한 요인이 무엇인지를 실증적으로 분석하였다. 연구결과 정보보호인력의 사기수준 결정요인으로 직무적 특징, 제도적 특징, 관계적 특징 등 3가지 요인을 압축적으로 제시하였으며, 정보보호인력 사기진작 프로그램 운영시 활용할 수 있도록 사기수준 측정모델의 활용방안을 제시하였다. As the number of recent information security incident occurrence increases, more and more workload and liability pressure are given to info-security professionals, which results in decrease of morale level of working groups in the field. In order to solve this problem, Korean government is providing various action plans to improve the morale level of info-security professionals, and also requiring financial companies to submit its own action plan of increasing morale of info-security professionals to Financial Service Agency. For this study, based on the previous studies and relevant professionals’ interviews, we selected 16 critical morale increase variables, and performed survey for empirical analysis. As a result, 3 features; role, system, and relationship were presented as the main factor of morale increasement of info-security professionals. This study also suggests a decision making method of utilizing the developed morale measurement model for individual organizations.
Quantification of Feng-Shui Principles in the Design of Korean Houses

Although Feng-Shui has been widely used in architecture and urban design and planning for thousands of years, it has not been properly studied as a scientific and thus rational approach. Feng-Shui has been recognized as an environment-friendly design and planning method in recent years due to its thoughtful consideration on the harmonious relationship between architecture and the natural environment. This study investigates its major principles and techniques that have been widely used in the design of houses through previous relevant researches. Then, the principles and techniques that are relevant to the residential uses are indexed for the quantification of Feng-Shui. Ten Feng-Shui indices are formulated and each index is quantified to make five points for a perfect match. These indices are then tested on three different types of house in Korea, namely traditional Korean houses, contemporary Korean style houses and contemporary architects' houses. The result shows that the first type of house records the highest Feng-Shui points and then the second and third types in that order. This result convinces us that the Feng-Shui indices can very effectively represent the degree of environmentally friendly design.
