Investigation of influence of linear diffuser in the ventilation of operating rooms
Keshtkar, Mohammad Mehdi,Nafteh, Maryam Techno-Press 2016 Advances in energy research Vol.4 No.3
Air quality in hospitals has always concerned hospitals' health officials due to its dangerous particles and gases. Because of the importance of air conditioning in the operating room, a system must be embedded in operating rooms to direct the contaminated air outside, and inject fresh filtered air from outside back into the room. In this study, laminar flow air conditioning system is implemented in the operating room by slot linear diffusers and with the help of air curtain. For this, stimulation Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) was used due to its efficiency. The aim of the present study was to find a proper solution to overcome the unfavorable factors, namely, contamination, humidity, and also temperature, velocity and pressure inside the room. These factors were implemented with different values and then stimulated through FLUENT software program. Results showed that the aforementioned factors can be overcome using air curtain and slot linear diffusers.

Ca-pretreated Cystoseira indica algae was used as a biosorbent for the biosorption of U(VI) and Fe(II) ions in single, binary and multi-component systems by using a packed bed column. Experiments were conducted to study the effect of important design parameters such as bed height and flow rate. FTIR and XRF analyses and pH and Ca2+ ion concentration recordings showed that the biosorption of U(VI) and Fe(II) proceeded through ion-exchange mechanism. BDST, Thomas and Modified dose-response models were used for predicting breakthrough curves and for estimations of the parameters necessary for the design of a large-scale packed bed column.
Biosorption of thorium from aqueous solution by Ca-pretreated brown algae Cystoseira indica
Ali Reza Keshtkar,Mohammad Amin Hassani 한국화학공학회 2014 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.31 No.2
The potential use of a biosorbent, Cystoseira indica, obtained from the Persian Gulf was investigated forthe removal of Th (IV) ions from aqueous solutions by considering equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic aspects. The FT-IR spectra of unloaded and Th-loaded biomass indicated various functionalities on the biomass surface includinghydroxyl, amide and carboxyl groups, which are responsible for the binding of thorium ions. Th (IV) uptake by C. indica was pH dependent. An increase in biosorbent dosage up to 1 g/L caused an increase in the Th (IV) percentageremoval. Biosorption process at all studied initial Th (IV) ion concentrations follows the pseudo-second order kineticmodel. The biosorption data could be well described by Redlich-Peterson isotherm in comparison to Langmuir andFreundlich isotherms. The maximum sorption capacity of Th (IV) by Langmuir isotherm was estimated to be 169.49mg/g at 45 oC with pH of 3. The thermodynamic parameters indicated the biosorption of Th on the biomass was a feasible, spontaneous and endothermic process. Th sorption capacity remained unaffected or slightly affected (<10% inhibition)in the presence of several interfering ions such as uranium (VI), nickel (II) and copper (II). The reusabilityof the biomass was also determined after five sorption-desorption cycles.
Goiter Frequency Is More Strongly Associated with Gastric Adenocarcinoma than Urine Iodine Level

Purpose: We designed our study to evaluate the hypothesis that gastric cancer is correlated with iodine deficiency or thyroid dysfunction. Materials and Methods: We investigated the total body iodine reserve, thyroid function status and autoimmune disorder in 40 recently diagnosed gastric adenocarcinoma cases versus 80 healthy controls. The participants came from a region with high gastric cancer rate but sufficient iodine supply due to salt iodination. The investigation included urine iodine level, thyroid gland clinical and ultrasonographic examination, and thyroid function tests. Results: Goiter was detected more frequently in the case group (P=0.001); such a finding, however, was not true for lower than normal urine iodine levels. The free T3 mean level was significantly lower in the case group compared to the control group (P=0.005). Conclusions: The higher prevalence of goiter rather than low levels of urinary iodine in gastric adenocarcinoma cases suggests that goiter, perhaps due to protracted but currently adjusted iodine deficiency, is more likely to be associated with gastric adenocarcinoma compared to the existing iodine deficiency itself.

Poly(vinyl alcohol)/tetraethyl orthosilicate (PVA/TEOS) ion exchange hybrid membranes modified with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (TMPTMS) were prepared by the sol-gel method, and their applications for the removal of lead ions from aqueous solutions in a batch sorption process were studied. The functional groups of the hybrid membranes were characterized by FTIR. Batch adsorption studies such as TMPTMS content, pH, adsorbent dose, contact time, initial concentration and temperature were evaluated. The maximum adsorption capacity of lead ions was found to be 61.62mg g−1, respectively. The kinetic data were analyzed by pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The Freundlich and Langmuir isotherm models were applied to describe the equilibrium data. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that the lead adsorption onto the membrane is an endothermic and spontaneous process. The PVA/TEOS/TMPTMS hybrid membrane is regenerated by 0.5M HNO3/0.1 M HCl in equal ratio solution and the adsorption capacity did not change remarkably after five sorption-desorption cycles.
Coronary Artery Calcium Score and Bone Metabolism: A Pilot Study in Postmenopausal Women
Pooneh Salari,Abbasali Keshtkar,Shapour Shirani,Leila Mounesan 대한골대사학회 2017 대한골대사학회지 Vol.24 No.1
Background: Since 1991 many studies evaluated the link between cardiovascular diseases and osteoporosis, two age-related conditions, but the main common pathologic pathway has not been determined yet. The histological similarity between arterial calcified plaque and bone matrix and involvement of similar cells and mediators provide a special field of research. Therefore in the present study, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between coronary artery calcium score (CACS) as a surrogate marker of atherosclerosis and bone mediators and parameters in postmenopausal women. Methods: Eleven postmenopausal women who had CACS higher than 80 were enrolled into the study and underwent bone densitometry. In addition, their serum and urine samples were taken for measuring osteoprotegerin, osteocalcin, and β cross laps. Patients’ 10- year probability of fracture was calculated by the World Health Organization fracturerisk assessment tool (FRAX). Results: The regression analysis of our results showed the association between CACS and OC (std β=0.66, 95% confidence interval [CI] 5.47-72.27, P=0.027), femoral bone density (std β=-0.6, 95% CI -6864.34-14.27, P=0.05) and T-score (std β=-0.6, 95% CI -773.08-1.28, P=0.05) which remained significant after adjustment for age, weight, years since menopause and body mass index. No association was found between CACS and osteoprotegerin, spinal bone density and FRAX score. Conclusions: In conclusion, this pilot study with small sample size showed the potential association between CACS and osteocalcin, femoral bone density and T-score. However, the relationship between CACS and osteoprotegerin, receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa B ligand, FRAX score and other bone parameters remain to be clarified in larger sample size studies.

Sorption of Cd(II), Ni(II) and U(VI) ions onto a novel cast PVA/TiO2/APTES nanohybrid adsorbent with variations in adsorbent dose, pH, contact time, initial metal concentration and temperature has been investigated. The adsorbent were characterized by SEM and FTIR analysis. BET surface area, pore diameter and pore volume of adsorbent were 35.98 m2 g-1, 3.08 nm and 0.059 cm3 g-1, respectively. The kinetic and equilibrium data were accurately described by the double-exponential and Freundlich models for all metals. The maximum sorption capacities were 49.0, 13.1 and 36.1 mg g-1 for Cd(II), Ni(II) and U(VI) ions with pH of 5.5, 5 and 4.5, respectively. Thermodynamic studies showed that the sorption process was favored at higher temperature. The adsorbent can be easily regenerated after 5 cycles of sorption–desorption.
