The time-varying mean (TVM) component of non-stationary wind speeds is commonly extracted utilizing empirical mode decomposition (EMD) in practice, whereas the accuracy of the extracted TVM is difficult to be quantified. To deal with this problem, this paper proposes an approach to identify and extract the optimal TVM from several TVM results obtained by the EMD. It is suggested that the optimal TVM of a 10-min time history of wind speeds should meet both the following conditions: (1) the probability density function (PDF) of fluctuating wind component agrees well with the modified Gaussian function (MGF). At this stage, a coefficient p is newly defined as an evaluation index to quantify the correlation between PDF and MGF. The smaller the p is, the better the derived TVM is; (2) the number of local maxima of obtained optimal TVM within a 10-min time interval is less than 6. The proposed approach is validated by a numerical example, and it is also adopted to extract the optimal TVM from the field measurement records of wind speeds collected during a sandstorm event.

Pulmonary vascular remodeling due to excessive proliferation and resistance to apoptosis of pulmonary artery smooth muscle cells (PASMCs) is the hallmark feature of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Recent evidence suggests that miR-125a-5p plays a role in a rat model of monocrotaline-induced PAH (MCT-PAH); however, the underlying mechanism is currently unknown. Here, we examined the expression profile of miR-125a-5p in MCT-PAH rats and investigated the putative therapeutic effect of miR-125a-5p using the miR-125a-5p agomir. In addition, the miR-125a- 5p agomir or antagomir was transfected into rat PASMCs, and proliferation and apoptosis were measured. Activity of the miR-125a-5p target STAT3 was measured using a luciferase reporter assay, and the expression of downstream molecules was measured using RT–qPCR and/or western blot analysis. Importantly, inducing miR-125a-5p expression in vivo slowed the progression of MCT-PAH by reducing systolic pulmonary arterial pressure, the Fulton index, and pulmonary vascular remodeling. Moreover, overexpressing miR-125a-5p inhibited the proliferation and promoted the apoptosis of PASMCs. In addition, stimulating PASMCs with TGF-β1 or IL-6 upregulated miR-125a-5p expression, whereas overexpressing miR-125a-5p reduced TGF-β1 and IL-6 production, as well as the expression of their downstream targets STAT3 and Smad2/3; in contrast, downregulating miR-125a-5p increased TGF-β1 and IL-6 production. Finally, a dual-luciferase reporter assay revealed that miR-125a-5p targets the 3′-UTR of STAT3, suppressing the downstream molecules PCNA, Bcl-2, and Survivin. Taken together, these findings suggest that miR-125a-5p ameliorates MCT-PAH in rats, has a negative feedback regulation with TGF-β1 and IL-6, and regulates the proliferation and apoptosis of PASMCs by directly targeting STAT3.

Reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatographic method was applied for the determination of eleutheroside B and E in the various Acanthopanax species collected In Korea. The stationary phase used was Zorbax 300 SB $C_{18}$ and a mobile phase program was used, which started at 6% acetonitrile for 2 min, and then a linear gradient was operated for the next 18 min to 17% acetonitrile at a flow rate of 1.0 ml/min. The column effluent was monitored at UV 210 nm. Identification was carried out by comparing the retention time and the LC/MS spectrum of each peak corresponding to eleutheroside B and E from sample with those of standards. In general, the contents of eleutheroside B and 1 in stems were higher than those In roots. Acanthopanax species could be classified into two groups based upon the contents of eleutheroside B and E: one group contains no or very little eleutheroside B and another contains both eleutheroside B and E.

Exploiting the inexpensive and efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is crucial forimproving the efficiency of electrocatalytic water splitting (EWS), since the slow 4-electron OER processis a rate-limiting step in EWS. Herein, we prepared the NiFe(OH)x/Fe0.2Co-Se complexes on carbon paper(CP) via an easy two-step electrochemical deposition strategy. By varying the doping amount of Fe andthe deposition time of Fe0.2Co-Se, the OER property of NiFe(OH)x/Fe0.2Co-Se/CP was optimized to the best:only requiring low overpotentials of 243 and 277 mV at the current density of 20 and 100 mA/cm2 (j20and j100) and a small Tafel slope of 36.8 mV/dec, along with a terrific long-term durability in 1 M KOH. According to the experimental results, the rich exposed active sites, improved intrinsic site activityand enhanced electrical conductivity lead to the superior OER performance. Our work will provide someinspiration for designing other metal selenide/hydroxide heterostructures for other energy conversion orstorage applications.

The simple and effective analytical method for the quality control of a novel scalp tonic formulation has been developed and optimized in terms of HPLC conditions and sample preparation method, meanwhile, the optimization of preparation condition was using response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design (CCD). Oleanolic acid was selected as marker compound because of its bioactivities for alopecia therapy. The developed analytical method and extraction condition were successfully qualified. Coefficient of determination ($r^2$) for the calibration was 0.9997 with a line passing through the origin point in the range of 0.1-100 mg/mL. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) were 17.5 ng/mL and 55.0 ng/mL, respectively. The intra-day and inter-day precision of the method were 0.5-1.4 % and 0.7-1.8 % in relative standard deviation, respectively, while those accuracy were 99.5-100.9 % and 100.0-102.2 %, respectively. The repeatability of oleanolic acid in samples ranged of 0.3-1.9 % based on peak area and 0.3-0.7 % for retention time. Recoveries from samples were 95.0-99.4 % with lower than 1.8 % in relative standard deviation. Overall, the developed analytical method will be used for quality control of this commercial scalp tonic products successfully.

In this paper, an algorithm based on a model analysis of the online calculation of the root-mean-square (RMS) value of welding current for single-phase AC resistance spot welding (RSW) was developed. The current is highly nonlinear and typically non-sinusoidal, which makes the measuring and controlling actions difficult. Though some previous methods focused on this issue, they were so complex that they could not be effectively used in general cases. The electrical model of a single-phase AC RSW was analyzed, and then an algorithm for online calculation of the RMS value of the welding current was presented. The description includes two parts, a model-dependent part and a model-independent part. Using a previous work about online measurement of the power factor angle, the first part can be solved. For the second part, although the solution of the governing equation can be directly obtained, a lot of CPU time must be consumed due to the fact that it involves a lot of complex calculations. Therefore, a neural network was employed to simplify the calculations. Finally, experimental results and a corresponding analysis showed that the proposed algorithm can obtain the RMS values with a high precision while consuming less time when compared to directly solving the equations.

<P>Interleukin (IL)-8 plays a central role in the initiation and maintenance of inflammatory responses in the inflammatory bowel disease. The proinflammatory cytokine-mediated production of IL-8 requires activation of various kinases, which leads to the I kappa B degradation and NF-kappa B activation. We investigated the role of 18 beta-glycyrrhetinic acid (GA), a saponin isolated from licorice roots, on TNF-alpha-induced IL-8 production in human colonic epithelial cells. HT29 cells were stimulated with TNF-alpha in the presence or absence of GA (1, 5 or 10 microM). IL-8 production was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction analysis, and the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs) activation and I kappa B alpha degradation were determined by Western blot analysis. GA suppressed TNF-alpha-induced IL-8 production in a concentration-dependent manner. In addition, GA inhibited TNF-alpha-induced phosphorylation of p38 MAPK and extracellular-regulated kinases (ERK), I kappa B alpha degradation, and NF-kappa B activation. These results suggest that GA has the inhibitory effects on TNF-alpha-induced IL-8 production in the intestinal epithelial cells through blockade in the phosphorylation of MAPKs, following I kappa B alpha degradation and NF-kappa B activation.</P>
