      • Study of acupuncture stimulation on experimental osteopenia

        In order to study the effect of acupuncture stimulation on bone mineral density (BMD), using the ovariectomized (OVX) rat model, we assessed the degree of osteopenia by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, measured the level of locomotor activity using a metabolism measuring system, and performed histological studies of bone tissue. Twenty-four female Wistar rats (8 weeks old, 160 - 180 g)were divided into three groups. Rats in the OVX-A group underwent ovariectomy followed by acupuncture stimulation. The OVX rats in the Vehicle control group were not treated with acupuncture as a control. The rats in the control group received neither ovariectomy nor acupuncture. Acupuncture stimulation for 12 weeks in the OVX-A group inhibited the reduction in BMD of the femoral bones caused by ovariectomy. Moreover, in the two OVX groups, there was no clear difference in the level of locomotor activity between the active and resting phases prior to acupuncture stimulation in each rat, and the pattern of locomotor activity was irregular. After acupuncture stimulation of the OVX-A rats, the pattern of locomotor activity became diphasic with clear active and resting phases, as was observed in the Control group. On histological studies, the continuity of trabecular bone was maintained more favorably and bone mass was higher in the OVX-A group than in the vehicle control group. These results suggest that the increased locomotor activity that had been induced by acupuncture stimulation increased the BMD.

      • Study of moxibustion stimulation in the ovariectomized rat model

        In order to examine the effectiveness of moxibustion stimulation for climacteric disturbance, we administered moxibustion stimulation to ovariectomized (OVX) rats, and compared the tail surface temperature, laboratory parameters, and the level of locomotor activity with those of untreated rats. Twenty-four female Wistar rats (8 weeks old, 160 - 180 g) were divided into three groups. The rats in the OVX-M group underwent moxibustion stimulation after ovariectomy. The rats in the OVX-C group underwent ovariectomy but did not receive moxibustion stimulation. The rats in the Normal group received neither ovariectomy nor moxibustion stimulation. The level of locomotor activity was determined by a metabolism measuring system. The tail surface temperature was significantly lower in the OVX rats before moxibustion stimulation than in the Normal group. In the OVX rats before moxibustion stimulation, there was no clear difference in the level of locomotor activity between the active and resting phases, and the pattern of locomotor activity was irregular. After moxibustion stimulation, the tail surface temperature of the OVX-M group did not significantly differ from that of the Normal group, and the pattern of locomotor activity of the OVX-M group became diphasic with clear active and resting phases, similar to that observed in the Normal group. These results demonstrate that moxibustion stimulation is effective for the treatment of climacteric disturbance.

      • 祝祭의 커뮤니케이션적 意味

        今日のように多樣化する社會においては祝祭の意義を以前のように「藝術的要素を含んだ祭議」と理解していては成功的な祝祭の創造を期待するのは難しいと言える、それは以前においては特別な日であった祝祭が今日の多樣化した社會で每日の日出來事のつに過ぎなくなったからである。每日どこかでイべントが開催されている今日の狀況の中では地方自治體などが行う祝祭を成功的なものにするには、現代の社會狀況にあった祝祭の意義を確立し、新しいコン-セプトで祝祭を創造する必要がある。 祝祭に關しては觀光學だけでなく文化人類學や社會學でも硏究の對象とされているが、文化人類學では祝祭の要素として「聖性、非日常性、周期性、集團關寫によるアイデンティティの確立」などを提示し、社會學分野では「コミユニケ-ツョンによる集團の再統合(集團同一化)」などと規定している。 今日の社會は血緣や地緣の關係が弱まり、機能性の側面が强くなってきているといえるか、このような社會狀況のなかでは「コミユニケ-シン」ヤ「アイデンティティの確立」という要素は大變重要なものとなってきている。したがって祝祭においてもこのようなコミユニケ-ションやアイデンティティの確立は重要視きれなければならない要素といえる。祝祭とイべントとを區別する要素も、「祝祭が參加者として關貰していると感しる主觀的なもの」であることに對し、「イベントは企者の觀點からみた客觀的なもの」というができるであろう。このことは逆にイべントが祝祭になるには參加者や觀覽者が祝祭に參加しているという感情を感じることができるようにするということが必要であると言ぇるであろう。 韓國では近年地方自治制度のスタ-トにより地方自治體で祝祭を企畵されることが多い。しかしその大部分は、地域住民に對する「文化福祉」の次元で行われているイベントであったり、觀光客を誘致するためのイベントであるというのが現狀てである。まだまだ「住民主導型の下からの祭り」はほとんどなく、「行政主導型の上からの祝祭」であっても地域住民の祝祭への積極的な取り입みや「住民主體への移ㅅ行」は行われていない狀況である。このままでは地方自治體主導の祝祭の多くは更なる發展を遂げていくことは難しく、發展のためには市民參加のものへと變わっていく必要があるであろう。 そのような韓國の狀況ではあるが、一部の若者たちが中心になって「住民主導型の祭り」を作ろうという動きが見られるのは注目すべきことであろう。それらの祝祭は最近日本で人氣を博している新しい型の祭りである「ヨサコイ系祭り」をまねたものであるが、地域や世代、職場などの壁を越えて多くの人が參加して作り上げていく「ヨサコイ系祭り」は「コミユニケ-ション」や「アイデンティティの確立」という要素を充分に滿たしているものであり。韓國の祝祭がより成功的なものへと發展していくために大變參考になることであろう。

        넙치의 세균성 질환

        Flounder culture has been developed mainly in the western parts of japan, and, to date, following six bacterial diseases have been reported. Bacterial white enteritis occurs in 16 to 30-day-old flounder larvae and often causes mass mortality in seed production. Bacterium named Vibrio sp. INFL invades and multiplies in the mucosae of posterier part of intestine, and causes desquamative enteritis. Gliding bacterial disease occurs mostly in juvenile stage and in spring to summer. Diseased signs are partial discoloration and erosion of skin and fins. Histologically, epidermis are removed, and the causative bacterium, Flexibacter maritimus, multiplies on the surface of demis and invades into the muscular tissue. Vibriosis caused by Vibrio anguillarum and related organisum is one of the well-known diseases among marine fish. Outbreaks of the disease in flounder culture are relatively few, but mass mortalities in fingerlings due to the disease were reported. An outbreak of nocardiosis in the autumn of 1984 has been reported, but since then the disease scarcely occurred. The disease is characterized by formation of abscesses under the skin and white nodes in the gill, heart, spleen and kidney. Streptococcicosis occurs frequently in recent years. Beta-hemolytic streptococcus is the causative bacterium, which possesses the same biochemical and serological characteristics as, B-streptococci isolated from some marine and freshwater fish, and is seemed to related to Streptococcus iniae. Edwardsiellosis is the disease that causes most damage in flounder culture in Japan. Characteristic symptoms are swelling of abdomen and intestinal protrusion from the anus due to accumulation of ascites. Edwardsiella tarda, a well-known pathogen of freshwater fish, is the causative bacterium of the disease.

        Acetabular Subchondral Bone Decortication and Its Role in the Outcome of Cemented Total Hip Replacement in Young Patients

        Purpose: Long-term fixation of cemented acetabular components can be problematic in younger active patients. Our technique is put forward to improve outcomes and maximize implant survivorship in this particular patient population. Materials and Methods: We report on a cohort of young adult patients (less than 55 years old) with cemented total hip replacement (THR) using a novel technique in preparing and cementing the acetabulum with a minimum follow-up of 10 years (mean follow-up, 14 years). Retrospectively collected data on clinical and radiological outcomes were reviewed. Results: Sixty-five THRs were performed with the minimum study follow-up period. Average age for patients was 44 years old (range, 19-55 years). The mean Hip Disability and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score for patients at final appointment was 92.7. Radiographs taken at an average of 14 years after operation showed 63 of 65 hips showed no evidence of any radiological loosening. Cup survivorship was 100% at the end of the study period. Conclusion: Our technique of preparing the acetabulum in combination with cement fixation is reproducible with excellent results in a cohort of patients prone to early aseptic loosening of the acetabular component.

        Physiological, Pharmacological and Toxicological Implications of Heterodimeric Amino Acid Transporters

        The heterodimeric amino acid transporter family is a subfamily of SLC7 solute transporter family which includes 14-transmembrane cationic amino acid transporters and 12-transmembrane heterodimeric amino acid transporters. The members of heterodimeric amino acid transporter family are linked via a disulfide bond to single membrane spanning glycoproteins such as 4F2hc (4F2 heavy chain) and rBAT $(related\;to\;b^0,\;^+-amino\;acid\;transporter)$. Six members are associated with 4F2hc and one is linked to rBAT. Two additional members were identified as ones associated with unknown heavy chains. The members of heterodimeric amino acid transporter family exhibit diverse substrate selectivity and are expressed in variety of tissues. They play variety of physiological roles including epithelial transport of amino acids as well as the roles to provide cells in general with amino acids for cellular nutrition. The dysfunction or hyperfunction of the members of the heterodimeric amino acid transporter family are involved in some diseases and pathologic conditions. The genetic defects of the renal and intestinal transporters $b^{0,+}AT/BAT1\;(b^{0,+}-type\;amino\;acid\;transporter/b^{0,+}-type\;amino\;acid\;transporter\;1)$ and $y^+LAT1\;(y^+L-type\;amino\;acid\;transporter\;1)$ result in the amino aciduria with sever clinical symptoms such as cystinuria and lysin uric protein intolerance, respectively. LAT1 is proposed to be involved in the progression of malignant tumor. xCT (x-C-type transporter) functions to protect cells against oxidative stress, while its over-function may be damaging neurons leading to the exacerbation of brain damage after brain ischemia. Because of broad substrate selectivity, system L transporters such as LAT1 transport amino acid-related compounds including L-Dopa and function as a drug transporter. System L also interacts with some environmental toxins with amino acid-related structure such as cysteine-conjugated methylmercury. Therefore, these transporter would be candidates for drug targets based on new therapeutic strategies.

        Circadian variations in salivary chromogranin a concentrations during a 24-hour period in dogs

        The purpose of this study was to determine if salivary chromogranin a secretion in dogs exhibits a circadian rhythm. Saliva sampling was performed during three different sessions occurring in three nonconsecutive 24-h periods. Sixteen healthy adult beagle dogs (8 males and 8 females) were moved to a sampling room and housed individually in cages. Saliva samples were obtained every 4 h from 12:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m. the following day. In the interest of habituation, saliva was obtained hourly from each dog 3 h before the experiment was started. Salivary chromogranin A concentrations were measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. No circadian rhythm was detected for salivary chromogranin A secretion, and no differences in salivary chromogranin A concentrations measured every 4 h were demonstrated during the 24-h cycle in dogs.

      • Analysis of Functional Ingredient Accumulation Mechanism and Application in Sake Yeast

        S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) is a key regulatory compound in various biological reactions and functions as a major donor of methyl groups. SAM is highly accumulated in vacuoles in sake yeast compared to other yeast strains, bacteria, molds, or other microorganisms. To isolate a SAM-accumulating yeast strain, we screened methionine resistant strains using the yeast deletion library of budding yeast and identified ADO1 encoding adenosine kinase as one of the factors participating in high SAM accumulation. Next, to elucidate the mechanism underlying SAM accumulation in sake yeast strains compared with that in laboratory yeast strains, we performed quantitative trait locus (QTL: Quantitative trait locus) analysis and identified ERC1 gene, encoding a member of the multi-drug and toxin extrusion family having antiporter activity. Expression of the sake yeast ERC1 allele resulted in intracellular SAM accumulation. Moreover, the sake yeast ERC1 allele contributes to an increase in the ratio of Tetrahydrofolate (THF) to the total folate content in sake yeast. Thus, our findings might be useful in the breeding of high SAM and folate accumulating yeast strains for industrial uses such as dietary supplements, sake cakes and so on.
