Frustrated minority spins in GeNi2O4
Matsuda, M.,Chung, J.-H.,Park, S.,Sato, T. J.,Matsuno, K.,Aruga Katori, H.,Takagi, H.,Kakurai, K.,Kamazawa, K.,Tsunoda, Y.,Kagomiya, I.,Henley, C. L.,Lee, S.-H. Editions de Physique 2008 Europhysics letters Vol.82 No.3
<P>Recently, two consecutive phase transitions were observed, upon cooling, in an antiferromagnetic spinel GeNi2O4 at <I>T</I><I>N</I>1=12.1 K and <I>T</I><I>N</I>2=11.4 K, respectively (Crawford M. K. <I>et al</I>., <I>Phys. Rev. B</I>, <B>68</B> (2003) 220408(R)). Using unpolarized and polarized elastic neutron scattering we show that the two transitions are due to the existence of frustrated minority spins in this compound. Upon cooling, at <I>T</I><I>N</I>1 the spins on the 〈111〉 kagome planes order ferromagnetically in the plane and antiferromagnetically between the planes (phase I), leaving the spins on the 〈111〉 triangular planes that separate the kagome planes frustrated and disordered. At the lower <I>T</I><I>N</I>2, the triangular spins also order in the 〈111〉 plane (phase II). We also present a scenario involving exchange interactions that qualitatively explains the origin of the two purely magnetic phase transitions.</P>

Polygraphus proximus Blandford (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) is a non-aggressive monogynous bark beetle that has caused mass mortality in fir (Abies spp.) forests in the last decade. Although gallery structures made by polygynous beetles may influence their reproductive success, the gallery structure and the number of eggs laid by the monogynous tree-killing bark beetle P. proximus has not been investigated in detail in the natural setting of their native range. We, therefore, investigated the length of mother galleries of P. proximus and the number of eggs oviposited by the beetles in relation to gallery systems with different numbers of arms. The number of eggs oviposited in two-armed galleries was significantly greater than that observed in one- and threearmed galleries. Additionally, the length of one- or two-armed galleries with no oviposition was significantly shorter than that in galleries consisting of more than two arms. Our data may suggest that the optimal number of arms in a gallery system (in terms of the number of eggs oviposited) was two.

We investigated the effects of the mitogen supplements of 3 types, pokeweed mitogen (PWM), phytohemagglutinin (PHA) and concanavalin A (ConA), to a whole blood culture system on the number of metaphase spreads obtained in perinatal bovine chromosome analysis. In addition, the supplementation of ${\beta}$-mercaptoethanol (${\beta}$-ME) and FBS was examined in such system. Significant differences (p<0.05) were seen in the number of metaphase spreads with PHA stimulation compared to both PWM and ConA stimulation. When examined the effects of ${\beta}$-ME supplementation, the number of metaphase spreads was significantly (p<0.05) increased at $30{\mu}M$ ${\beta}$-ME compared to control. When evaluated FBS supplementation during PWM stimulation, no significant effect of the supplementation was found. Finally, the effects of the cortisol concentration (10-20, 20-30 and >30 ng/ml) of the blood samples were examined. There was no significant effect of cortisol concentration (p>0.05) among these 3 cortisol concentration groups. The mean percentages of normal metaphase plates (2n=60) from each calf 1) with ${\beta}$-ME, 2) without ${\beta}$-ME and 3) with FBS stimulated with PWM were not significantly different (p>0.05). In conclusion, these findings may be useful in cytogenetic screening programs for not only perinatal calves but also for mature cattle.
Progress in R&D of coated conductor in M-PACC project

The five-year national project in Japan for R&D of coated conductors and applications, named as the Materials and Power Applications of Coated Conductors (M-PACC) project, was finished at the end of FY2013. The project consists of four sub-themes as cable, transformer, SMES and coated conductors. In the theme of coated conductors, the fabrication process had been developed to satisfy the requirements from the applications such as in-field $I_c$ performance, low AC loss in the long tapes etc. Through the project, the remarkable progress was achieved as follows; a high in-field minimum $I_c$ value over 54A/cm-width under 3T at 77K was realized in a 200m long EuBCO tape with artificial pinning centers of $BaHfO_3$ by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique on the IBAD template. On the other hand, the AC loss reduction was confirmed in the tapes fabricated by both PLD and the metal organic deposition (MOD) techniques by scribing 100m tapes into 10-filamments. Additionally, the mechanism of the delamination phenomenon was systematically investigated and the strength was improved by eliminating the origins of the weak points in the films. Through the development, all targeted goals were accomplished and the several results were appreciated as a world champion data.
The AKARI NEP-Deep survey: a mid-infrared source catalogue
Takagi, T.,Matsuhara, H.,Goto, T.,Hanami, H.,Im, M.,Imai, K.,Ishigaki, T.,Lee, H. M.,Lee, M. G.,Malkan, M.,Ohyama, Y.,Oyabu, S.,Pearson, C. P.,Serjeant, S.,Wada, T.,White, G. J. Springer-Verlag 2012 Astronomy and astrophysics Vol.537 No.-
<P>We present a new catalogue of mid-IR sources using the AKARI NEP-Deep survey. The InfraRed Camera (IRC) onboard AKARI has a comprehensive mid-IR wavelength coverage with 9 photometric bands at 2–24?µm. We utilized all of these bands to cover a nearly circular area adjacent to the north ecliptic pole (NEP). We designed the catalogue to include most of sources detected in 7, 9, 11, 15 and 18?µm bands, and found 7284 sources in a 0.67?deg2 area. From our simulations, we estimate that the catalogue is~80 per cent complete to 200µJy at 15–18µm, and ~10 per cent of sources are missed, owing to source blending. Star-galaxy separation is conducted using only AKARI photometry, as a result of which 10 per cent of catalogued sources are found to be stars. The number counts at 11, 15, 18, and 24µm are presented for both stars and galaxies. A drastic increase in the source density is found in between 11 and 15µm at the flux level of~300micro;Jy. This is likely due to the redshifted PAH emission at 8µm, given our rough estimate of redshifts from an AKARI colour–colour plot. Along with the mid-IR source catalogue, we present optical-NIR photometry for sources falling inside a Subaru/Sprime-cam image covering part of the AKARI NEP-Deep field, which is deep enough to detect most of AKARI mid-IR sources, and useful to study optical characteristics of a complete mid-IR source sample.</P>
