Seismic qualifications of electrical equipment, such as cabinet systems, have been emerging as the key area of nuclear power plants in Korea since the 2016 Gyeongju earthquake, including the high-frequency domain. In addition, electrical equipment was sensitive to the high-frequency ground motions during the past earthquake. Therefore, this paper presents the rocking behavior of the electrical cabinet system subjected to Reg. 1.60 and UHS. The high fidelity finite element (FE) model of the cabinet related to the shaking table test data was developed. In particular, the first two global modes of the cabinet from the experimental test were 16 Hz and 24 Hz, respectively. In addition, 30.05 Hz and 37.5 Hz were determined to be the first two local modes in the cabinet. The high fidelity FE model of the cabinet using the ABAQUS platform was extremely reconciled with shaking table tests. As a result, the dynamic properties of the cabinet were sensitive to electrical instruments, such as relays and switchboards, during the shaking table test. In addition, the amplification with respect to the vibration transfer function of the cabinet was observed on the third floor in the cabinet due to localized impact corresponding to the rocking phenomenon of the cabinet under Reg.1.60 and UHS. Overall, the rocking of the cabinet system can be caused by the low-frequency oscillations and higher peak horizontal acceleration.

Bellows expansion joints enhance the displacement performance of piping systems owing to their unique geometrical features. However, structural uncertainties such as wall thinning in convolutions, a byproduct of the manufacturing process, can impair their structural integrity. This study addresses such issues by conducting a global sensitivity analysis to assess the impact of these uncertainties on the performance of bellows expansion joints under monotonic loading. Global sensitivity analysis, which examines main and nth order interaction effects, is computationally expensive. To mitigate this, we employed a surrogate model-based approach using an artificial neural network. This model demonstrated robust prediction capabilities, as evidenced by metrics such as the coefficient of determination. The sensitivity indices of the main effect for the 2-ply and 3-ply bellows at the sixth convolution were 0.3340 and 0.3233, respectively. The sensitivity index of the sixth convolution was larger than that of other convolutions because the maximum deformation of the bellows expansion joint under monotonic bending load occurs around it. Interestingly, the sensitivity index for the interaction effect was negligible (0.01%) compared to the main effect, suggesting minimal activity between uncertainty factors across convolutions. Notably, bellows expansion joints under repetitive loading exhibit more complex behaviors, with the initial leakage typically occurring at the convolution. Therefore, future studies should focus on the structural uncertainties of bellows expansion joints under cyclic loading and employ a surrogate model for comprehensive global sensitivity analysis.

Water and sewage pipelines are examples of infrastructure facilities. Damage to pipelines caused by earthquakes is likely to cause serious damage to the city. Therefore, water and sewage pipelines must be earthquake-proofed. Earthquakes or ground subsidence can cause relative displacements that exceed the design displacement. This causes damage to the joint of the pipe between the ground and the structures. Bellows, one of the types of expansion joints, is a device that absorbs the expansion and deformation of the pipe caused by the temperature differences and prevents damage to the pipe caused by the mechanical vibration. Bellows were used in this study to protect buried pipelines from earthquake displacement and ground subsidence. Unlike conventional bellows, the laminated hydroforming metal bellows have good durability against low-cycle fatigue loads such as earthquakes. Therefore, cyclic loading tests for bending were performed on 3-ply bellows-type expansion joints, and seismic safety and subsidence resistance were assessed. As a result, it was confirmed that the 3-ply bellows-type expansion joint was safe for a deformation angle of 8.8° or more.

The electric cabinet serves to store electronic devices or system controllers in plant facilities such as power plants. If the electrical cabinet is damaged by an external load such as an earthquake, a system failure or plant shutdown may occur. For a stable and sustainable energy supply, it is very important to assess the safety of the electric cabinet using an external load. Electrical cabinets are mainly supported by anchors on concrete slabs, so the loss of anchoring capacity may result in cabinet damage. Concrete materials are subject to various uncertainties and their variability exceeds that of other materials. As a result, using the finite element model of the electric cabinet-anchor system developed in previous studies, seismic fragility was evaluated in this study while accounting for the uncertainty of concrete materials. Thirty concrete material models were sampled using Latin hypercube sampling, and time history analysis was performed under artificial earthquake that satisfies the uniform hazard spectrum of the Uljin area. The stress of the anchor and the displacement of the top of the cabinet were defined as limit states. As a result, the damage begins when the anchor stress and top displacement exceeded 0.2 g and mostly fails at 0.5 g. In a future study, we plan to conduct a seismic fragility evaluation by considering the uncertainty of earthquakes and the uncertainty of materials simultaneously.
