        Using Films in Second-Language Learning: Perspectives Through the Lens of Transmedia and Cultural Learning

        This study had two objectives: (1) to observe how the participants used a TV series to learn English and (2) to investigate to what extent they changed the way they used the TV series to learn English based on three activities or guidelines that a teacher gave for better learning. They were, first, that the centrality of the meaning (of the lexicon and of the pattern) is core in using TV series for L2 learning; second, how to learn conventional expressions; and third, that in using a language, language knowledge and world knowledge should be combined. For the analysis, the participants’ reports were used. For the first guideline, it was found that the participants primarily paid attention to understanding the utterances in the script. They performed poorly. In the second activity, the participants performed relatively well. In the third activity, when the participants were assisted, they were able to focus on patterns. After the activities, they realized that they could learn the importance of context and culture as well as conventional expressions. A pedagogical implication of these findings is that although TV series are expected to make learning enjoyable, language matters should take precedence.

        A Study of the Effects of Transmedia Storytelling on Active Participation and Language Learning

        This study observed the following two purposes: (1) to investigate whether transmedia storytelling (TS) encourages beginner-level college students to actively participate in classwork, and (2) to determine whether TS is positively related to second language (L2) learning. The transmedia approach will help the students to gain more knowledge and information about the target language. Two beginners were invited to act as case studies to these ends. An American television series, The Good Place (Holland, 2018), was chosen. This study was conducted in three stages: (1) participant presentations on selected topics via TS, (2) first recall test (one week later, with notice), and (3) second recall test (two weeks later, without notice). On the first test, Participant A scored well on his selected topic, but his score dropped somewhat on Participant B’s topic. Participant B had a better score than Participant A on both topics. The second test was an error analysis. Participant A had minor errors on the TS-based topic but significant ones on the not-TS-based topic. Participant B had fewer errors than Participant A on both topics, and all his errors were minor. Both participants were involved in active participation. Pedagogical implications are discussed in the conclusion.

        종교 풍자: 조지 오웰로부터 신무신론자에 이르기까지

        1930년대와 40년대에 조지 오웰은 전체주의에 대한 주요 비평가였다. 오늘날 신무신론자로 알려진 사회의 지식인들은 이른바 “종교 근본주의”가 부상하고 있는 상황에 대한 비판을 주도하고 있다. 이 논문에서는 오웰과 신무신론에 대한 간략한 비교연구를 제시하고 있다. 1940년대 오웰의 작품은 저자의 의도와 상관없이 모든 글쓰기가 어떻게 동기부여 되고 그것의 역사적·정치적 맥락과 구분될 수 없는지를 설명하고 있다. 오웰의 맥락은 전시의 사회주의였던 반면에 신무신론자들은 동시대의 자유민주주의에 의해 자극을 받았다. 이 논문은 신무 신론자들이 그들의 책을 통하여 강력하게 주장하고 있는 자본주의에 대한 자유 이념이 간단히 말하면 이슬람 종교 근본주의자들과 관련한 신무신론자들의 전략인, “합리적”이고 “진보적”인 담론을 가진 인종 편견으로 매우 쉽게 그리고 종종 위장할 수 있다는 것을 논하고 있다. During the 1930s and 40s George Orwell was a leading critic of totalitarianism. Today, public intellectuals known as New Atheists lead a charge against an allegedly rising tide of “religious fundamentalism.” This paper presents a brief comparative study of Orwell and the New Atheism. Orwell`s work of the 1940s illustrates how all writing, regardless of the author`s intention, is motivated by and cannot be divorced from its historical and political context. Whereas Orwell`s context was wartime socialism, the New Atheists are motivated by contemporary liberal democracy. The paper concludes by arguing that the liberal ideology of capitalism, which the New Atheists strongly advocate through their work, can very easily and often disguise racial prejudice with “rational” and “enlightened” discourse, which is precisely the strategy of the New Atheists in relation to the “religious fundamentalism” of Islam.

      • Throughput Analysis of Qudit Based Quantum Byzantine Agreement

        Correlated private lists form the basis for solving the Byzantine agreement (BA) problem in a distributed network. Quantum correlations-based protocols for list distribution provide unparalleled security and fault-tolerance compared to the conventional classical schemes. Recently proposed qudit-based BA provides the most practical quantum scheme. In this paper, we investigate the performance of this scheme through a discrete event-based quantum network simulator. We utilize throughput as the performance measure to evaluate its scalability. Our results show that list distribution time scales exponentially with the number of parties involved in BA.

        U2 snRNA variants are differentially incorporated into spliceosomes

        In this study, five U2 small nuclear (sn)RNA variants were detected in the posterior silk gland of the Bombyx mori Nistari strain, one of which represents a novel U2 isoform not previously identified in other strains of this species. Following glycerol gradient ultracentrifugation of B. mori silk gland whole cell lysate, the newly isolated variant, U2α, was detected at a greater frequency in total cell lysate than in a high density glycerol gradient fraction rich in spliceosomal complexes. Conversely, previously identified isoforms U2A, U2B, U2D and U2N are abundant in the fraction containing high molecular weight spliceosomal complexes, possibly indicating their greater involvement in splicing. As expected, western blot and semi-quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction experiments indicate high levels of specific serine and arginine rich (SR) proteins and total U2 snRNA (all variants included) in the fraction enriched in spliceosomes. Free energy values for each U2 isoform, as well as their individual stem-loops, were estimated to determine their structural stability. Due to the essential role of U2 in the transesterification reactions, it is possible that these isoforms may modulate splicing through differential incorporation into the spliceosome.

        단순한 지식만을 습득하는 것은 그 지식은 기술의 향상과 함께 무용지물이 될 것 이다. 누구라도 과거 대부분의 지식을 기억할 수 있다면, 가장 멋진 미래를 만들 수 있는 사람될 것이다. 아이들이 원하는 것은 공부보다는 가족과 함께 하는 시간을 갖는 것이다. 따라서 부모는 자녀의 인생에서 가장 중요한 역할 모델이 되어야 하며 , 해당 역할 모델을 하기 위해서는 그들의 아이들과 함께 보낼 시간이 필요하다 부모는 양육이 아닌 교사로서의 대부분의 일을 해야 한다. 한국 현대 사회의 사회 문제를 해결하기 위해, 그것과 관련된 교육을 시작하여야 한다. 즉 어린이는 어린이로서의 시간이 필요하다. 그들은 부모의 관심을 받고, 자신들의 발전을 추구하여야 하는 시간을 가져야 한다. 어린 시절 걱정없이 즐거운 시간과 기쁨으로 가득하지만, 그들은 나이를 먹어 감에 따라, 사회의 구성원으로 자신의 미래 발전 이 중요하다는 것을 깨달을 수 있을 것 이다. 자신의 유년기를 탐험하는 기회가 필요하지만 그들이 그 오랜 세월을 재현하는 시간은 없을 것이다. 테스트에서 높은 점수를 받는다는 것은 인상적이지만 모든 것은 그들이 결정할 수 있는 선택을 할 때 성인으로 올라가게 되는 것 이다.

        Use of graded responsibility and common entrustment considerations among United States emergency medicine residency programs

        Purpose: The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requires all residency programs to provide increasing autonomy as residents progress through training, known as graded responsibility. However, there is little guidance on how to implement graded responsibility in practice and a paucity of literature on how it is currently implemented in emergency medicine (EM). Wesought to determine how EM residency programs apply graded responsibility across a variety of activities and to identify which considerations are important in affording additional responsibilities to trainees. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of EM residency programs using a 23-question survey that was distributed by email to162 ACGME-accredited EM program directors. Seven different domains of practice were queried. Results: We received 91 responses (56.2% response rate) to the survey. Among all domains of practice except for managing critically illmedical patients, the use of graded responsibility exceeded 50% of surveyed programs. When graded responsibility was applied,post-graduate year (PGY) level was ranked an “extremely important” or “very important” consideration between 80.9% and 100.0% ofthe time. Conclusion: The majority of EM residency programs are implementing graded responsibility within most domains of practice. Whendecisions are made surrounding graded responsibility, programs still rely heavily on the time-based model of PGY level to determineadvancement.
