Effects of Long-term Heat Exposure on Adaptive Mechanism of Blood Acid-base in Buffalo Calves
Korde, J.P.,Singh, G.,Varshney, V.P.,Shukla, D.C. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2007 Animal Bioscience Vol.20 No.5
In order to investigate the mechanism of adaptation to long-term heat stress, six female buffalo calves of about 7 to 8 months age, were exposed to the cool-comfort environment (THI 65) for 21 days to obtain normal values of blood acid-base. An adaptive response of acid-base regulation was determined to long term (21 days) exposure of buffalo calves to hot-dry (THI 80) and hot-humid (THI 84) conditions. Higher rectal temperature and respiratory rate was recorded under hot-humid exposure compared to hot-dry. Significant reduction in the rectal temperature and respiratory rate on day 21 of hot-dry exposure indicated early thermal adaptation compared to hot-humid. Decreasing rectal temperature and respiratory rate from day 1 to 21 was associated with concurrent decrease in blood pH and pCO2. Increased plasma chloride concentration with low base excess in blood and in extracellular fluid suggested compensatory response to respiratory alkalosis. Reduced fractional excretion of sodium with increased fractional excretion of potassium and urine flow rate indicated renal adaptive response to heat stress.
Dielectric and Optical Study of Polymer Nematic Liquid Crystal Composite
Manohar, S.,Shukla, S.N.,Chandel, V.S.,Shukla, J.P.,Manohar, R. The Korean Institute of Electrical and Electronic 2013 Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Material Vol.14 No.3
The dielectric anisotropy and dispersion of the real and imaginary part of the permittivity of commercially important nematic mixture E-24 and its polymer composite were investigated in the frequency range from 1 kHz to 10 MHz, and temperature range $14^{\circ}C$ to $55^{\circ}C$. The percentage optical transmittance and density have also been measured for both the systems. The results have been explained by assuming molecular rotation about the long molecular axis, under a hindering nematic potential. The dielectric anisotropy ${\Delta}{\varepsilon}$ is positive, and the mean dielectric permittivity falls with rising temperature. ${\Delta}{\varepsilon}$ is also used to determine the order parameter with varying temperature.
Effect of proton irradiation on electrical properties of a-As2S3
Gautam, S.,Thakur, A.,Shukla, D.K.,Shin, H.J.,Chae, K.H.,Singh, K.P.,Goyal, N. North-Holland 2011 Journal of non-crystalline solids Vol.357 No.11
This paper reports the effect of proton irradiation on the electrical properties of a-As2S3 in the temperature range of 323-418K and frequency range 0.1-100kHz. The variation of transport property is studied with proton irradiation dose (1x1013ions/cm2 and 1x1015ions/cm2). It has been observed that proton irradiation changes the dc conductivity (σdc), dc activation energy (ΔEdc) and ac conductivity (σac(ω)). The σdc and σac(ω) increases with dose of proton irradiation. The value of frequency exponent (s) decreases with the temperature and irradiation dose. These results are explained in terms of change in density of defect states in these glasses.
In vitro and In vivo Biocompatibility Evaluation of Freeze Dried Gelatin Haemostat
Sneha Letha S,Santosh Kumar Shukla,Neena Haridas,Smitha R P,Sidharth Mohan M,Archana V,Rosemary M J 한국섬유공학회 2021 Fibers and polymers Vol.22 No.3
Gelatin sponges developed by crosslinking gelatin with formaldehyde followed by controlled freeze-drying resultsin soft, spongy porous structures, which are useful in arresting bleeding during surgical procedures. The aim of this article isto conduct the in vivo evaluation of the gelatin sponge as per ISO 10993: Biological evaluation of medical devices; and proveits biocompatibility. The sponges were also evaluated by morphology analysis, tensile strength and blood-absorption studies. Sponges were found to be microporous with considerable mechanical strength to withstand any rupture during its application. Blood absorption studies showed good absorption behaviour. As per ISO 10993; cytotoxicity, skin irritation, sensitisation andblood compatibly studies has to be conducted to check the biocompatibility of a biomaterial. Gelatin sponge was found to benon-cytotoxic in Balb/c 3T3 cells. The experiments conducted on albino rabbits and guinea pig concluded that the materialdoes not cause any irritation and sensitisation in vivo and is non-haemolytic when in contact with blood. Hence the materialmeets the requirements of a biocompatible haemostatic agent for the management of blood loss during surgical procedures.
Optical Studies of a Pure and Dye Doped Nematic Liquid Crystal E-24
Chandel, V.S.,Manohar, S.,Shukla, J.P.,Manohar, R. The Korean Institute of Electrical and Electronic 2012 Transactions on Electrical and Electronic Material Vol.13 No.5
The present paper reports the comparative optical behavior of a pure nematic mixture E-24 and its anthraquinone dye doped sample. The variation in the ordinary and extraordinary refractive index ($n_o$, $n_e$) of the pure and dye doped samples with temperature has been discussed and it has been found that doped sample have a less refractive index compared to the pure sample. The variation in the order parameter for pure and doped samples with temperature has been discussed and it has been seen that the doped sample has a higher order parameter; the possible reasons have been discussed. The variations in birefringence and optical transmittance have also been presented here.
