        Effect of brick infill panel on the seismic safety of reinforced concrete frames under progressive collapse

        Structural safety has always been a key preoccupation for engineers responsible for the design of civil engineering projects. One of the mechanisms of structural failure, which has gathered increasing attention over the past few decades, is referred to as ‘progressive collapse’ which happens when one or several structural members suddenly fail, whatever the cause (accident, attack, seismic loading(.Any weakness in design or construction of structural elements can induce the progressive collapse in structures,during seismic loading. Masonry infill panels have significant influence on structure response against the lateral load. Therefore in this paper, seismic performance and shear strength of R.C frames with brick infill panel under various lateral loading patterns are investigated. This evaluation is performed by nonlinear static analysis. The results provided important information for additional design guidance on seismic safety of RC frames with brick infill panel under progressive collapse.

        Effect of Education on Promoting Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors That Prevent Breast Cancer in Middle-Aged Women: Application of Protection Motivation Theory

        Background: In recent years, an increased incidence of breast cancer has made this disease the most common malignancy among Iranian women. Since education plays an important role in the implementation of preventive behaviors in breast cancer treatment, this study investigates the effect of educational interventions on the promotion of lifestyle-related behaviors that prevent breast cancer in middle-aged women. Methods: In this randomized control study, 120 women referred to Neyshabur Health Services Centers were randomly selected and divided into two groups: an intervention group (60 subjects) and a control group (60 subjects). An educational intervention was carried out over five sessions, based on protective motivation theory constructs. Participants completed a researcher-designed questionnaire immediately and again 2 months after the intervention. The data were analyzed using IBM SPSS ver. 19.0 software (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). Results: The results revealed a significant difference between the mean scores of participants exposed to protective motivation theory, awareness, and physical activities immediately and also 2 months after the intervention (P<0.05). Although the healthy diet scores of the two groups differed significantly immediately after the educational intervention (P<0.05), there was no significant difference between the groups 2 months after the intervention (P<0.05). Conclusion: Given the effective role of education in protective motivation theory and the physical activity levels of the women who participated in this research, it seems clear that the women’s financial status shaped their ability to consume more fruits and vegetables. As this social element impacts the health of individuals, training programs alone cannot succeed.

        The Effects of Steel Fiber and Nano-SiO2 on the Cyclic Flexural Behavior of Reinforced LWAC Beams

        The dead load and consequently the burden imposed on the structures due to earthquake can be reduced using Lightweight Aggregate Concrete (LWAC). In this study the cyclic flexural performance of LWAC beams is experimentally investigated to assess the influence of nano-SiO2 and steel fibers on the reversal flexural behavior. Tests were carried out on the reinforced LWAC beams with dimensions of 150 × 200 × 1200 mm under alternative cycles of variable displacement amplitudes. The cyclic behavior of these members including hysteresis response, load bearing capacity, envelope curve, stiffness, energy dissipation capacity and crack pattern are discussed and compared. The results showed that the addition of steel fiber significantly enhanced maximum flexural strength, cumulative dissipated energy, post-cracking stiffness and damage tolerance ability of LWAC beam. Adding nano-silica alone had slight effect on improving the reversal cyclic flexural behavior of LWAC. Furthermore the use of nano-silica increased the effectiveness of steel fiber on enhancement the cyclic flexural performance, especially at higher levels of displacement.

        Human parvovirus B19 in patients with beta thalassemia major from Tehran, Iran

        Background: Due to the tropism of human parvovirus B19 to erythroid progenitor cells, infection in patients with an underlying hemolytic disorder such as beta-thalassemia major leads to suppression of erythrocyte formation, referred to as transient aplasia crisis (TAC), which may be life-threatening. We investigated the prevalence of parvovirus B19 among patients with beta thalassemia major attending the Zafar Adult Thalassemia Clinic in Tehran, Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed to determine the presence of parvovirus B19 DNA in blood samples and parvovirus B19 genotypes in plasma samples of patients with thalassemia major. The population consisted of 150 patients with beta-thalassemia major who attended the Zafar clinic in Tehran. Specimens were studied using a real-time poly-merase chain reaction assay. Results: The prevalence of parvovirus B19 in our study population was 4%. Of 150 patients with thalassemia, six (4%) were positive for B19 DNA. There was no significant correlation between blood transfusion frequency and B19 DNA positivity. Finally, phylogenetic analy-sis of human parvovirus B19 revealed genotype I in these six patients. Conclusion: In this study, acute B19 infections were detected in patients with beta thalassemia major. Screening of such high-risk groups can considerably reduce the incidence and prevalence of B19 infection; thus, screening is required for epidemiologic surveillance and dis-ease-prevention measures.

        The effect of the tongue in groove technique on the nasolabial angle and nasal tip projection

        Background: The tongue in groove technique (TIG) is a useful technique for the correction of the nasal tip projection and the nasolabial angle. The purpose of this study was to determine the utility of this technique for nasal tip rotation and projection correction in the Iranian society. Methods: This is a retrospective clinical trial study of 20 patients undergoing open septo-rhinoplasty using TIG technique from January 2017 to August 2019 at the oral and maxillofacial unit of Bu Ali Hospital and private sector. Preoperative and postoperative profile view photographs were compared to assess the changes in tip projection and rotation. Results: Fifteen patients (75%) had normal angular size, and 5 of them (25%) were not within the normal range after the surgery. The Fisher exact test showed that this success was statistically significant (P = 0.006). Ten patients (50%) had normal projection size, postoperatively. The Fisher exact test showed that this effect was statistically significant (P < 0.01) Conclusion: The study demonstrated the benefit of TIG on the correction of nasal tip projection and rotation.

        Human parvovirus B19 and parvovirus 4 among Iranian patients with hemophilia

        Background: Human parvovirus B19 (B19V) is one of the smallest DNA viruses and shows great resist-ance to most disinfectants. Therefore, it is one of the common contaminant pathogens present in blood and plasma products. Parvovirus 4 (PARV4) is a newly identified parvovi-rus, which is also prevalent in parenteral transmission. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the prevalence of B19V and PARV4 DNA among patients with hemophilia in Birjand County in eastern Iran. Methods: This was a cross-sectional epidemiological study comprising nearly all people with hemo-philia in this region. Whole blood samples were taken after patient registration and sent for plasma isolation. After nucleic acid extraction, B19V was detected with real-time poly-merase chain reaction, PARV4 DNA was then detected using sensitive semi-nested PCR. Results: In total, there were 86 patients with hemophilia, with mean age 28.5±1.5 years. Of these, 90.7% were men and 9.3% women; 84.9% had hemophilia A and 7.0% had hemophilia B. We found 11 patients (12.8%) were positive for B19V DNA and 8 were positive (9.3%) for PARV4 DNA. The prevalence of B19V was higher in middle-aged groups rather than younger people, whereas PARV4 infection was more common in younger patients (P<0.05). Conclusion: There was a high prevalence of B19V and PARV4 infection in this high-risk group of pa-tients with hemophilia. Due to the clinical significance of the B19 virus, imposing more precautionary measures for serum and blood products is recommended.
