Endoscopic transstomal stent insertion: a novel approach for a stenosed stoma in a challenging patient

        Aljarad Feras,Gumber, Ashutosh,McLeary Anne Marie,Shalli, Kawan 대한대장항문학회 2023 Annals of Coloproctolgy Vol.39 No.4

Transstomal stent deployment to maintain the patency of stoma in a challenging patient who developed stoma stenosis, is a minimal invasive, novel technique. This is a new and alternative approach in management of stoma stenosis in a difficult case using a biodegradable stent for end colostomy.

Simple Fuzzy Rule Based Edge Detection

        ( O. P. Verma ),( Veni Jain ),( Rajni Gumber ) 한국정보처리학회 2013 Journal of information processing systems Vol.9 No.4

Most of the edge detection methods available in literature are gradient based, which further apply thresholding, to find the final edge map in an image. In this paper, we propose a novel method that is based on fuzzy logic for edge detection in gray images without using the gradient and thresholding. Fuzzy logic is a mathematical logic that attempts to solve problems by assigning values to an imprecise spectrum of data in order to arrive at the most accurate conclusion possible. Here, the fuzzy logic is used to conclude whether a pixel is an edge pixel or not. The proposed technique begins by fuzzifying the gray values of a pixel into two fuzzy variables, namely the black and the white. Fuzzy rules are defined to find the edge pixels in the fuzzified image. The resultant edge map may contain some extraneous edges, which are further removed from the edge map by separately examining the intermediate intensity range pixels. Finally, the edge map is improved by finding some left out edge pixels by defining a new membership function for the pixels that have their entire 8-neighbourhood pixels classified as white. We have compared our proposed method with some of the existing standard edge detector operators that are available in the literature on image processing. The quantitative analysis of the proposed method is given in terms of entropy value.

Photoanode modified with nanostructures for efficiency enhancement in DSSC: a review

        Yogesh Kumar,Tushar Chhalodia,Paramjeet Kaur Gumber Bedi,P. L. Meena 한국탄소학회 2023 Carbon Letters Vol.33 No.1

The research on dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is in the advanced stage today. The only concern observed so far has been regarding its stability and efficiency. Its power conversion efficiency can be increased by incorporating various methods and materials based on nanotechnology. Several attempts have been employed to develop advanced methods for eco-friendly, commercially viable, and sustainable DSSCs to minimize the energy crisis in the future. Photoanode is one of the essential components of DSSCs that can be modified using different nanostructures to enhance its efficiency. The TiO2 nanoparticlebased photoanode with gold and silver has proven to be potent materials for getting efficient DSSCs. The plasmonic and quantum confinement effects also play a vital role in efficiency enhancement. In this review, we discuss numerous attempts made by researchers in the last decade to modify the photoanode and their progress. We also look at different types of nanostructures, such as quantum dots, metal oxide doping, layered structures, nanocomposites, and thin film formation, that improve the efficiency of DSSCs. Several methods were reviewed to modify photoanodes to optimize electron transportation, light scattering, trapping power, surface area, and reduce charge recombination. The trend in the efficiency enhancement of DSSCs using TiO2, Au, ZnO, Ag, and graphene nanostructures-based photoanodes have been explored in great detail.

      • Induction of Th1-Biased T Follicular Helper (Tfh) Cells in Lymphoid Tissues during Chronic Simian Immunodeficiency Virus Infection Defines Functionally Distinct Germinal Center Tfh Cells

        Velu, Vijayakumar,Mylvaganam, Geetha Hanna,Gangadhara, Sailaja,Hong, Jung Joo,Iyer, Smita S.,Gumber, Sanjeev,Ibegbu, Chris C.,Villinger, Francois,Amara, Rama Rao The American Association of Immunologists, Inc. 2016 JOURNAL OF IMMUNOLOGY Vol.197 No.5

Chronic HIV infection is associated with accumulation of germinal center (GC) T follicular helper (Tfh) cells in the lymphoid tissue. The GC Tfh cells can be heterogeneous based on the expression of chemokine receptors associated with T helper lineages, such as CXCR3 (Th1), CCR4 (Th2), and CCR6 (Th17). However, the heterogeneous nature of GC Tfh cells in the lymphoid tissue and its association with viral persistence and Ab production during chronic SIV/HIV infection are not known. To address this, we characterized the expression of CXCR3, CCR4, and CCR6 on GC Tfh cells in lymph nodes following SIVmac251 infection in rhesus macaques. In SIV-naive rhesus macaques, only a small fraction of GC Tfh cells expressed CXCR3, CCR4, and CCR6. However, during chronic SIV infection, the majority of GC Tfh cells expressed CXCR3, whereas the proportion of CCR4(+) cells did not change, and CCR6(+) cells decreased. CXCR3(+), but not CXCR3(-), GC Tfh cells produced IFN-gamma (Th1 cytokine) and IL-21 (Tfh cytokine), whereas both subsets expressed CD40L following stimulation. Immunohistochemistry analysis demonstrated an accumulation of CD4(+) IFN-gamma(+) T cells within the hyperplastic follicles during chronic SIV infection. CXCR3(+) GC Tfh cells also expressed higher levels of ICOS, CCR5, and alpha 4 beta 7 and contained more copies of SIV DNA compared with CXCR3(-) GC Tfh cells. However, CXCR3(+) and CXCR3(-) GC Tfh cells delivered help to B cells in vitro for production of IgG. These data demonstrate that chronic SIV infection promotes expansion of Th1-biased GC Tfh cells, which are phenotypically and functionally distinct from conventional GC Tfh cells and contribute to hypergammaglobulinemia and viral reservoirs.
