Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) are the electrical responses from the brain concerned with visual information processing. Amplitude of VEPs is smaller than that of background EEG activity, and the stimulus-locked averaging method is usually used for obtained the waveform. VEP response to each stimulus is not completely the same however it is varying with its amplitude and duration. Therefore, amplitude of averaged VEP waveform deteriorates due to their variability in raw data. Feature extraction of background EEG activity during visual stimulation is also a one of significant items in VEP analysis. In that case, separation of VEP component and background EEG component (mainly posterior dominant rhythm) is crucial. In the past, we proposed the method of estimating both amplitude of VEP and dominant rhythm by use of EEG model. This present study, the proposed method was applied to actual recorded VEP data and its effectiveness was evaluated. EEGs with visual stimulus were recorded from nine healthy young adults. Usefulness of the proposed method was investigated by comparing the conventional power spectrum averaging method. The proposed method will be applicable to show an accurate VEP analysis and characteristic analysis of background activity under visual stimulus.
The leading ideal of a complete intersection of height two, Part II
Goto, Shiro,Heinzer, William,Kim, Mee-Kyoung Elsevier 2007 Journal of algebra Vol.312 No.2
<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Let (S,n) be a regular local ring and let I=(f,g) be an ideal in <I>S</I> generated by a regular sequence f,g of length two. Let R=S/I and m=n/I. As in [S. Goto, W. Heinzer, M.-K. Kim, The leading ideal of a complete intersection of height two, J. Algebra 298 (2006) 238–247], we examine the leading form ideal I∗ of <I>I</I> in the associated graded ring G=grn(S). If grm(R) is Cohen–Macaulay, we describe precisely the Hilbert series H(grm(R),λ) in terms of the degrees of homogeneous generators of I∗ and of their successive GCD's. If D=GCD(f∗,g∗) is a prime element of grn(S) that is regular on grn(S)/(f∗D,g∗D), we prove that I∗ is 3-generated and a perfect ideal. If htgrn(S)(f∗,g∗,h∗)=2, where h∈I is such that h∗ is of minimal degree in I∗∖(f∗,g∗)grn(S), we prove I∗ is 3-generated and a perfect ideal of grn(S), so grm(R)=grn(S)/I∗ is a Cohen–Macaulay ring. We give several examples to illustrate our theorems.</P>
No Association between the CDX2 G543C Polymorphism and Risk of Gastric Atrophy and Cancer
Goto, Yasuyuki,Kato, Tsuyoshi,Ando, Takafumi,Goto, Hidemi,Hamajima, Nobuyuki Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.11
Ectopic expression of CDX2 in the stomach is closely associated with chronic Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and intestinal metaplasia. Whether CDX2 has tumor suppression or tumorigenesis potential remains to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the association between the CDX2 G543C polymorphism (silent mutation) and the risk for H. pylori-induced gastric atrophy and cancer as well as H. pylori infection, using 454 Japanese subjects undergoing a health checkup and 202 gastric cancer patients. The frequency of the minor allele was the same as previously reported in China, but different from that reported in England. CDX2 G543C was not associated with risk of H. pylori infection, gastric atrophy, or gastric cancer, although the point estimate for non-cardiac differentiated gastric cancer as compared to controls with gastric atrophy was 2.22 (95%CI=0.17-29.4). In conclusion, our results indicate that the CDX2 G543C polymorphism is unlikely to affect the H. pylori infection-gastric atrophy-gastric cancer sequence.

Visual mismatch negativity (v-MMN) in electroencephalographic (EEG) record provides an index of preattentive information processing of the brain v-MMN is considered to reflect schizophrenia. The positive and negative syndrome scale (PANSS) is usually used in clinical diagnosis on patients with schizophyenia for estimating the degree of disorder. In this study, the relationship between v-MMN and PANSS was analyzed. Characteristic parameters of peals including N1, N2, P300, and MMN were established respectively. Estimated function was constructed by selected parameters. P300 was most significant characteristic related to all items of FANSS.
Derivation Algorithm of State-Space Equation for Production Systems Based on Max-Plus Algebra
Goto, Hiroyuki,Masuda, Shiro Korean Institute of Industrial Engineers 2004 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.3 No.1
This paper proposes a new algorithm for determining an optimal control input for production systems. In many production systems, completion time should be planned within the due dates by taking into account precedence constraints and processing times. To solve this problem, the max-plus algebra is an effective approach. The max-plus algebra is an algebraic system in which the max operation is addition and the plus operation is multiplication, and similar operation rules to conventional algebra are followed. Utilizing the max-plus algebra, constraints of the system are expressed in an analogous way to the state-space description in modern control theory. Nevertheless, the formulation of a system is currently performed manually, which is very inefficient when applied to practical systems. Hence, in this paper, we propose a new algorithm for deriving a state-space description and determining an optimal control input with several constraint matrices and parameter vectors. Furthermore, the effectiveness of this proposed algorithm is verified through execution examples.
Horizontal Distribution and Seasonal Change of Picophytoplankton in SurFace Water of Lake Biwa
Goto, Naoshige,Mitamura, Osamu,Masaki, Kihira The Korean Society of Limnology 2005 생태와 환경 Vol.38 No.S
Seasonal change in cell number and biomass expressed as chlorophyll a of picophytoplankton community in surface waters was investigated in the north basin of Lake Biwa from September 2001 to November 2002. Two main peaks, in May and summer (from July to October), were observed by change of the cell density of picophytoplankton. It is considered that peak in May was due to water temperature rise and summer peak was attributed to mass-specific nutrient uptake by picophytoplankton. Horizontal distribution in cell number and biomass of picophytoplankton community in surface water of Lake Biwa was investigated at 56 stations on June 6 ${\sim}$ 7 2002. DIN and DIP concentrations were lower in the north basin than in the south basin. The cell density and chlorophyll a of picophytoplankton were distributed almost uniformly in all area. The contribution of picophytoplankton to total phytoplankton chlorophyll a was higher in the north basin than in the south basin. These results suggest that picophytoplankton is important as a primary producer in low nutrient periods and areas of Lake Biwa.

<P>In order to study the effect of trace impurities on high-cycle fatigue damage of ultrafine grained (UFG) copper, fatigue tests were carried out for two samples: oxygen-free copper (OFC, 99.99 wt% Cu) and deoxidized low-phosphorous copper (DLP, 99.95 wt% Cu). After the processing by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) using eight passes, equiaxed grains with an average size of 250 nm were formed for both the samples. Fatigue strength of UFG copper was enhanced by the impurities. The formation behavior of surface damage and the change in surface hardness was monitored. A close relationship was observed between the change in hardness and the formation behavior of surface damage. The physical background of the effect of trace impurities on the fatigue damage was discussed from the viewpoints of surface damage formation behavior.</P>

Effects of supplementation with ruminal epithelial cells on fiber-degrading activity and cell growth of Ruminococcus albus (R. albus, strain 7) was tested using a basal substrate of rice straw and formulated concentrate. Cultures of R. albus alone and R. albus with rumen protozoa were grown at $39^{\circ}C$ for 48 h with an 8.4% crude protein (CP) substrate, 33% of the CP supplemented with either ruminal epithelial cells or defatted soybean meal. The ruminal epithelial cells had lower amounts of rumen soluble and degradable protein fractions as compared to defatted soybean meal, as determined by an enzymatic method, and the same was found with amino acid composition of protein hydrolysates. Ruminal epithelial cells were directly utilized by the R. albus, and resulted in greater growth of cell-wall free bacteria compared to defatted soybean meal. The effect of epithelial cells on bacterial growth was enhanced by the presence of rumen protozoa. In consistency with cultures of R. albus and R. albus with rumen protozoa, fermentative parameters such as dry matter degradability and total volatile fatty acid did not differ between supplementation with ruminal epithelial cells or defatted soybean meal.

An ultrahigh density optical disk head which utilizes evanescent light (near-field light) had been designed to enhance the near-field optical wave for the throughput increment using the surface plasmon polariton resonance effect between the light inside the near-field optical head and nano-fabricated corrugated metal thin film. The theoretical analysis is discussed with the emphasis on the two- and three-dimensional simulation using finite difference time domain method. It is also experimentally shown that the near-field light enhancement in a waveguide of a clad covered with corrugated gold thin film was observed and that the near-field light enhancement in a waveguide without the film was not. If the corrugation pitch and the focused laser wavelength used with self-aligned microlens are designed properly, more than 20% throughput will be realized using nanometer fabricated metallic grating.
