This study explores the structure of international migration and its relationships with various political, economic, and cultural networks by using data from the OECD. In addition, the study provides a structural analysis of international migration by using network analysis, which has not been applied to this area, and employs a wide range of procedures, including degree centrality, hierarchical cluster analysis, and QAP correlations, to provide a rich description of the international migration network. The results indicate that the network was composed of the following three groups: U.S.-centered, U.K.-centered, and Western European groups. Economic relationships between countries represented the most saliently correlated factor within the international migration network, and telecommunications had a significant relationship with migration. These results have important implications for the relationship between the national-level migration network and data on the pattern of structural connectivity between countries.

This paper explores the influences of the traditional Chinese culture on social relations in China. It provides an introduction to the concept of Guanxi, the notion that social connections are based on socially situated reciprocity. This is different from social interaction in Western society that is based on self-interest and equity. Guanxi represents the foundation of social networks in many Eastern countries. As such, the study of social networks in China requires scholars to examine Guanxi networks. The paper demonstrates how a Guanxi perspective might be added to the examination of various theories that comprise structural (network) theory, including social capital theory, social exchange theory, cognitive and contagion theories, and the role of homophily for the study of Chinese society and its social organizations.

The goal of this study is to examine the contents of the online newspaper that might reflect the possibilities of the news medium for public journalism practice. More specifically, the study aims at comparing the degree of public journalism practice of the online newspapers between the United States and Korea. There are two main research questions in the study: 1) What are the differences in four categories of public journalism practices (various sources, thematic information, problem solving, mobilizing information) of the online newspapers between the two countries? 2) What are the differences in the three categories of interactivity services (one-way, two-way, interactive) provided by the online newspapers between the two countries? In this study a total of 1,102 news articles were collected and content-analyzed from the United States (n= 548) and Korea (n= 554). The sample was gathered from four newspapers, two from each country: the online edition of the New York Times and Rochester Democrat and Chronicle from the United States and the online editions of the Chosun Ilbo and the Hankyore from Korea. Results of content analysis show that the public journalism practice of the online newspaper of the United States is more actively practicing than that of Korean online newspapers. However, in terms of interactivity services, Korean online newspapers provide more various interactive devices than those of the United States do.
