        Dietary chia (Salvia hispanica L.) improves the nutritional quality of broiler meat

        Objective: The current study was conducted to evaluate the quality and profile of fatty acid in the breast and thigh, and the performance of broilers fed diets containing seed or oil of chia (Salvia hispanica L.) as a replacement for soybean, in the rearing period from 29 to 42 days of age. Methods: On the 29th day of age, 120 broilers were distributed in four treatments evaluated in five replicates of six birds. The grain or oil of soybean was respectively replaced on a weight-to-weight basis in the formulation by the seed or oil of chia, constituting the experimental diets. The roasted whole soybean and chia seed were included in the feed at 16.4%, whereas the soybean and chia oils were included at 2.5%. Results: The dietary chia oil increased the lipid peroxidation in the thigh meat, and the dietary chia seed increased the cooking loss of the thigh. However, for the other physicochemical parameters evaluated and for the proximate composition of the breast and thigh, in general, the inclusion of chia seed or oil in the diet provided similar or better results than those observed when the diets contained soybean oil or roasted whole soybean. With regard to the fatty acid profile and associated parameters, dietary chia increased the concentrations of α-linolenic, eicosapentaenoic, and docosahexaenoic acids and reduced the Σω-6:Σω-3 ratio and the atherogenicity and thrombogenicity indices of the broiler meat. However, the dietary chia seed worsened the feed conversion ratio. Conclusion: Diet containing 2.5% chia oil supplied to broilers during the period from 29 to 42 days of age improves the feed conversion ratio, increases the deposition of the ω-3 fatty acids in the breast and thigh, in addition to reducing the Σω-6:Σω-3 ratio and the atherogenicity and thrombogenicity indices, thereby resulting in meat with higher nutritional quality.

        올림픽의 역사는 언제나 평화, 경쟁, 결속력, 그리고 공정한 경기(play)들과 밀접한 관계로 뒤얽혀 있다. 페르시아의 패배를 알리기 위해 페이디피데스(Pheidippides)가 마라톤(Marathon)에서 아테네(Athens)로 처음 뛰었던 기원전 490년부터 지금까지 올 림픽이라는 스포츠 경쟁은 국가적, 국제적 차원의 국정과 불가분의 관계라 하겠다. 개최도시 선정, 올림픽 개최, 각 도시에서 서로 경쟁하는 국가들이 그 관계를 보여준 다 할 수 있으며, 또한 선수들이 나타내어 보여주는 현수막(banners)까지 모두 정치적 의미를 지니고 있음에서도 볼 수 있다. 올림픽은 종종 올림픽이라는 행사 자체가 정 치적 변화를 촉진하고, 올림픽이 아니었다면 포착하기 어려웠을 민심을 좌우하는데 사용되곤 한다. 본 연구는 우선 이전의 올림픽과 그 올림픽들의 영향력 분석을 통하 여 올림픽과 정치 분야의 관계를 상징하기에 이른 몇 개의 중요한 역사적 사건을 간 략히 기술하고자 한다. 또한 본 연구는 서울에서 개최된 1988년 하계올림픽을 조사하 여 스포츠와 국무 영역간의 관계를 더욱 명확하고 구체적으로 파악하고자 한다. 본 연구의 중요한 시사점은 1988년 하계 올림픽 사례 연구뿐만 아니라 역사적 사례들을 통해 배우고, 나아가 평창과 강릉시가 공동 주최 하는 평창 동계 올림픽과 장애인 올 림픽을 고대해 본다는 것이다. 이러한 이벤트들의 정치적 의미는 국제적 관계에 있어 서 국가, 국가간, 그리고 국제적 수준으로 분류된다. 본 연구 결과는 특별히 한국의 사 례연구에 대하여 정책 제안 및 보다 넓은 정치적 영역에 기여한다.

      • Enrichment of molecular antenna triplets amplifies upconverting nanoparticle emission

        <P>Efficient photon upconversion at low light intensities promises major advances in technologies spanning solar energy harvesting to deep-tissue biophotonics. Here, we discover the critical mechanisms that enable near-infrared dye antennas to significantly enhance performance in lanthanide-doped upconverting nanoparticle (UCNP) systems, and leverage these findings to design dye-UCNP hybrids with a 33,000-fold increase in brightness and a 100-fold increase in efficiency over bare UCNPs. We show that increasing the lanthanide content in the UCNPs shifts the primary energy donor from the dye singlet to its triplet, and the resultant triplet states then mediate energy transfer into the nanocrystals. Time-gated phosphorescence, density functional theory, singlet lifetimes and triplet-quenching experiments support these findings. This interplay between the excited-state populations in organic antennas and the composition of UCNPs presents new design rules that overcome the limitations of previous upconverting materials, enabling performances now relevant for photovoltaics, biophotonics and infrared detection.</P>

        Polyethylene-Based Dielectric Composites Containing Polyhedral Oligomeric SilSesquioxanes Obtained by Ball Milling

        High-energy ball milling was tested as a method for producing Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE)- based nanodielectrics containing 1 wt% and 5 wt% OctaIsoButylPOSS (OibPOSS). Qualitative and quantitative evaluations were used to explore the compatibility between OibPOSS and PE. Several ball milling variables were optimized in a bid to achieve UHMWPE/OibPOSS nanodielectrics. The morphology, as well as the thermal and the dielectric properties of the samples, were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, broadband dielectric spectroscopy, and progressive-stress breakdown tests. The results showed that (i) ball milling was an effective method for producing UHMWPE/OibPOSS dielectric composites, but appeared ineffective in dispersing OibPOSS at the nanoscale, and (ii) the resulting UHMWPE/OibPOSS dielectric composites presented thermal and dielectric properties similar to those of neat UHMWPE.

        Competent Communicative Skills Developed within EFL Settings through the Medium of Poetry

        This study was conducted to develop a new EFL curriculum which aims to promote foreign language learning within a framework of the transactional theory of reading. The authors examined the integration of poetry within an EFL curriculum. The data collection consisted of a survey, interviews, samples of dialogue journal writing, classroom video recordings, classroom teachers' journals and the researchers' field notes and journal. Both quantitative and qualitative data were analyzed to address the research question: What happens when middle school students read poetry within a response-oriented framework? Data analysis revealed that: 1) The students showed positive attitudes and beliefs toward the study, 2) Reading poetry within a response-oriented framework was a good means of promoting the English language, and extending students' learning experiences. The researchers conclude that poetry has a unique and invaluable working contribution to make to EFL. 본 연구는 상호교통읽기 이론을 기반으로 하여 외국어학습을 향상시키기 위한 영어교과과정 개발을 목적으로 실험되었으며, 교과과정에 영시를 통합하는 과정을 연구, 소개한다. 연구의 데이터는 설문조사, 면담, 대화저널, 수업 녹화테이프, 교사의 저널과 연구자의 현장기록문 및 저널에서 수집되었다. “반응중심의 중등 영어수업에 영시를 활용할 때 학생들의 반응과 학습효과는 어떠한가?”라는 연구 질문을 제기하고, 수집된 데이터를 정량적, 정성적 방법론으로 분석했다. 분석결과 1) 본 연구에 학생들은 매우 긍정적인 반응을 보였으며, 2) 반응중심의 학습에 영시를 활용할 경우 학생들은 영어능력의 향상은 물론 경험을 넓힐 수 있었다. 따라서 본 연구자들은 영시가 학습에 도움을 주는 독특하고, 가치있는 자료이므로, 영어 수업에 다양하고 폭넓은 활용과 더불어 더욱 심도있는 연구가 필요하다고 제언한다.

        Worldwide, increasing numbers insecticide resistant insect is one of the main problem in this agricultural era. To manage the insecticide resistance, IRAC suggest some tips for farmers : 1. Sequence or alteration of insecticide based on MOA 2. Choosing the effective insecticide. In this point raised following question : How to distinguish the effective or non-effective insecticide. Until now, bioassay is the right answer. However that is a very time-consuming, labor-intensive, and costly process, so we were hoping that molecular based diagnosis could be alternate. It can summarized following steps : 1. Identification of insecticide resistance mechanism 2. Marker development 3. Molecular diagnosis 4. Selection of non-effective insecticide. Here we focused on the development of insecticide resistance marker. Point mutation in target site of insecticide is a good example. Up or down-regulation of specific gene and/or existence of chimeric gene is another example from Helicoverpa armigera.

        Transcutaneous medial fixation sutures for free flap inset after robot-assisted nipple-sparing mastectomy

        The application of minimal invasive mastectomy has allowed surgeons to perform nipple-sparing mastectomy via a shorter, inconspicuous incision under clear vision and with more precise hemostasis. However, it poses new challenges in microsurgical breast reconstruction, such as vascular anastomosis and flap insetting, which are considerably more difficult to perform through the shorter incision on the lateral breast border. We propose an innovative technique of transcutaneous medial fixation sutures to help in flap insetting and creating and maintaining the medial breast border. The sutures are placed after mastectomy and before flap transfer. Three 4-0 nylon suture loops are placed transcutaneously and into the pocket at the markings of the preferred lower medial border of the reconstructed breast. After microvascular anastomosis and temporary shaping of the flap on top of the mastectomy skin, the three corresponding points for the sutures are identified. The three nylon loops are then sutured to the dermis of the corresponding medial point of the flap. The flap is placed into the pocket by a simultaneous gentle pull on the three sutures and a combined lateral push. The stitches are then tied and buried after completion of flap inset.

        Predictors of durable immune responses six months after the last vaccination in preventive HIV vaccine trials

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Background</B></P> <P>The evaluation of durable immune responses is important in HIV vaccine research and development. The efficiency of such evaluation could be increased by incorporating predictors of the responses in the statistical analysis. In this paper, we investigated whether and how baseline demographic variables and immune responses measured two weeks after vaccination predicted durable immune responses measured six months later.</P> <P><B>Methods</B></P> <P>We included data from seven preventive HIV vaccine regimens evaluated in three clinical trials: a Phase 1 study of four DNA, NYVAC and/or AIDSVAX vaccine regimens (HVTN096), a Phase 2 study of two DNA and/or MVA vaccine regimens (HVTN205), and a Phase 3 study of a single ALVAC/AIDSVAX regimen (RV144). Regularized random forests and linear regression models were used to identify and evaluate predictors of the positivity and magnitude of durable immune responses.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>We analyzed 201 vaccine recipients with data from 10 to 127 immune response biomarkers, and 3–5 demographic variables. The best prediction of participants’ durable response positivity based on two-week responses rendered up to close-to-perfect accuracy; the best prediction of participants’ durable response magnitude rendered correlation coefficients between the observed and predicted responses ranging up to 0.91. Though prediction performances differed among biomarkers, durable immune responses were best predicted by the two-week response level of the same biomarker. Adding demographic information and two-week response levels of different biomarkers provided little or no improvement in the predictions.</P> <P><B>Conclusions</B></P> <P>For some biomarkers and for the vaccines we studied, two-week post-vaccination responses can well predict durable responses six months later. Therefore, if immune response durability is only assessed in a sub-sample of vaccine recipients, statistical analyses of durable responses will have increased efficiency by incorporating two-week response data.
