In patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer harboring epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations, the epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) are used as first treatment option. Because adenosquamous carcinoma (ASC) is a rare histologic subtype, evidences about EGFR-TKIs as first treatment option for advanced ASC are lacking. We report a case of an advanced ASC patient with the EGFR mutation, who showed good responses during 4-month treatment with gefitinib. And we will review about a necessity of EGFR mutation test and efficacy of EGFR-TKIs in ASC patients from the recent studies.
Algorithm for Predicting Functionally Equivalent Proteins from BLAST and HMMER Searches

In order to predict biologically significant attributes such as function from protein sequences, searching against large databases for homologous proteins is a common practice. In particular, BLAST and HMMER are widely used in a variety of biological fields. However, sequencehomologous proteins determined by BLAST and proteins having the same domains predicted by HMMER are not always functionally equivalent, even though their sequences are aligning with high similarity. Thus, accurate assignment of functionally equivalent proteins from aligned sequences remains a challenge in bioinformatics. We have developed the FEP-BH algorithm to predict functionally equivalent proteins from protein-protein pairs identified by BLAST and from protein-domain pairs predicted by HMMER. When examined against domain classes of the Pfam-A seed database, FEP-BH showed 71.53% accuracy, whereas BLAST and HMMER were 57.72% and 36.62%, respectively. We expect that the FEP-BH algorithm will be effective in predicting functionally equivalent proteins from BLAST and HMMER outputs and will also suit biologists who want to search out functionally equivalent proteins from among sequence-homologous proteins.

In this paper, we design and implement a firmware for portable PCR devices that is controlled by a smart phone. 목적: The objective of the study was to analyze the prognostic role of pathological response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) and adjuvant management in unresectable advanced ovarian cancer (AOC) patients. 방법: We retrospectively evaluated 94 unresectable AOC patients treated with NACT followed by interval debulking surgery (IDS). Pathological response was classified as follows: complete remission (CR) in the absence of residual disease, microscopic (microPR) in the presence of microscopic tumor foci, and macroscopic (macroPR) when macroscopic residual disease was detected. Adjuvant management was classified to two groups: the one was treated with 3 cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy and the other was treated with more than 3 cycles. 결과: No differences were observed in the distribution of baseline clinicopathological characteristics among 3 pathologic groups. Median progression- free survival was 28 months CR, 16 in microPR, and 13 in macroPR (p<0.05). Median overall survival was 52 months in CR, 32 in microPR, and 21 in macroPR (p<0.05). Median PFS was not different between 3ACT and 6ACT, but median OS was significantly longer in 6ACT when the analysis was conducted in platinum-respondors (28 months vs. 34 months). 결론: The pathologic response to NACT is associated with a favorable prognosis. Additionally, the sufficient adjuvant chemotherapy was important. The careful clinical setting is necessary for the patients treated with IDS following NACT
