Application of shape memory alloy prestressing devices on an ancient aqueduct

        Chrysostomou, Christis Z.,Stassis, Andreas,Demetriourder, Themos,Hamdaoui, Karim Techno-Press 2008 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.4 No.2

The results of the application of shape memory alloy (SMA) prestressing devices on an aqueduct are presented in this paper. The aqueduct was built in 1747 to provide water to the city of Larnaca and to its port. Because of its importance to the cultural heritage of Cyprus, the aqueduct has been selected as one of the case-study monuments in the project Wide-Range Non-Intrusive devices toward Conservation of Historical Monuments in the Mediterranean Area (WIND-CHIME). The Department of Antiquities of Cyprus, acting in a pioneering way, have given their permission to apply the devices in order to investigate their effectiveness in providing protection to the monument against probable catastrophic effects of earthquake excitation. The dynamic characteristics of the structure were determined in two separate occasions and computational models were developed that matched very closely the dynamic characteristics of the structure. In this paper the experimental setup and the measured changes in the dynamic characteristics of the monument after the application of the SMA devices are described.

Health-monitoring and system-identification of an ancient aqueduct

Chrysostomou, Christis Z.,Stassis, Andreas Techno-Press 2008 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.4 No.2

An important historical monument of Cyprus is an aqueduct that was built in 1747 to provide water to the city of Larnaca and to its port. Because of its importance to the cultural heritage of Cyprus, the aqueduct has been selected as one of the case-study monuments in the project Wide-Range Non-Intrusive devices toward Conservation of Historical Monuments in the Mediterranean Area (WIND-CHIME). Detailed drawings of the aqueduct obtained from the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus have been used for the development of a computational model. The model was fine-tuned through the measurement of the dynamic characteristics of the aqueduct using forced and ambient vibrations. It should be noted that measurement of the dynamic characteristics of the structure were performed twice in a period of three years (June of 2004 and May of 2007). Significant differences were noted and they are attributed to soil structure interaction effects due to seasonal variations of the water-level in a nearby salt-lake. The system identification results for both cases are presented here. This monument was used to test the effectiveness of shape memory alloy (SMA) pre-stressed devices, which were developed during the course of the project, in protecting it without spoiling its monumental value.

Experimental Research on Bond Behaviour of Fabric Reinforced Cementitious Matrix Composites for Retrofitting Masonry Walls

        Fayu Wang,Nicholas Kyriakides,Christis Chrysostomou,Eleftherios Eleftheriou,Renos Votsis,Rogiros Illampas 한국콘크리트학회 2021 International Journal of Concrete Structures and M Vol.15 No.3

Fabric reinforced cementitious matrix (FRCM) composites, also known as textile reinforced mortars (TRM), an inorganic matrix constituting fibre fabrics and cement-based mortar, are becoming a widely used composite material in Europe for upgrading the seismic resistance of existing reinforced concrete (RC) frame buildings. One way of providing seismic resistance upgrading is through the application of the proposed FRCM system on existing masonry infill walls to increase their stiffness and integrity. To examine the effectiveness of this application, the bond characteristics achieved between (a) the matrix and the masonry substrate and (b) the fabric and the matrix need to be determined. A series of experiments including 23 material performance tests, 15 direct tensile tests of dry fabric and composites, and 30 shear bond tests between the matrix and brick masonry, were carried out to investigate the fabric-to-matrix and matrix-to-substrate bond behaviour. In addition, different arrangements of extruded polystyrene (XPS) plates were applied to the FRCM to test the shear bond capacity of this insulation system when used on a large-scale wall.

The Effect of Mastic Chios Supplementation in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Systematic Literature Review

        Aikaterini Mavroudi,Elena Hadjimbei,Konstantinos Giannakou,Stavri Chrysostomou 한국식품영양과학회 2023 Journal of medicinal food Vol.26 No.4

Mastic Chios is a natural treasure of Greece that offers many potential benefits in various disorders due its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This systematic review aimed to investigate the effect of Mastic Chios supplementation in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). A systematic search was conducted following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines across PubMed/Medline and EBSCO databases until February 2023. Clinical studies that examined individuals of any age being diagnosed with IBD as well as preclinical studies using animals with experimental colitis were considered eligible for inclusion. Studies included were assessed for methodological quality. Eight articles were eligible for inclusion, with seven conducted in Greece and one study in Iran. Most of the studies were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and one was a pilot study. The intervention period varied between 3 and 7 days for animal studies and 4 weeks to 6 months for human studies. Mastic Chios supplementation varied between 2.2 and 2.8 g/day for clinical studies. The majority of studies concluded that Mastic Chios has significant antioxidant and inflammatory effects in IBD. This systematic review suggests that Mastic Chios may have a positive effect on the regulation and management of IBD. However, more high-quality clinical trials are needed to provide reliable and concrete conclusions about the effectiveness of Mastic Chios in this population. Such studies will further support the use of Mastic Chios as a reliable therapeutic option for IBD.

Multi-type, multi-sensor placement optimization for structural health monitoring of long span bridges

        Soman, Rohan N.,Onoufrioua, Toula,Kyriakidesb, Marios A.,Votsisc, Renos A.,Chrysostomou, Christis Z. Techno-Press 2014 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.14 No.1

The paper presents a multi-objective optimization strategy for a multi-type sensor placement for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) of long span bridges. The problem is formulated for simultaneous placement of strain sensors and accelerometers (heterogeneous network) based on application demands for SHM system. Modal Identification (MI) and Accurate Mode Shape Expansion (AMSE) were chosen as the application demands for SHM. The optimization problem is solved through the use of integer Genetic Algorithm (GA) to maximize a common metric to ensure adequate MI and AMSE. The performance of the joint optimization problem solved by GA is compared with other established methods for homogenous sensor placement. The results indicate that the use of a multi-type sensor system can improve the quality of SHM. It has also been demonstrated that use of GA improves the overall quality of the sensor placement compared to other methods for optimization of sensor placement.
