Ovarian teratoma removed by laparoscopic ovariectomy in a dog

        Inês T. Tavares,Ramón R. Barreno,José P. Sales-Luís,Carlo G. Vaudano 대한수의학회 2018 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.19 No.6

An elective laparoscopic ovariectomy on a healthy dog revealed a cystic structure in the left ovary. The surgical procedure was successful. Histopathological examination showed the presence of a teratoma adjacent to the ovary. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first reported case of an ovarian teratoma removed by laparoscopic ovariectomy in a dog by using a multiport laparoscopic ovariectomy technique.

Effects of different primers on indirect orthodontic bonding: Shear bond strength, color change, and enamel roughness

Mirella Lemos Queiróz Tavares,Carlos Nelson Elias,Lincoln Issamu Nojima 대한치과교정학회 2018 대한치과교정학회지 Vol.48 No.4

Objective: We aimed to perform in-vitro evaluation to compare 1) shear bond strength (SBS), adhesive remnant index (ARI), and color change between self-etched and acid-etched primers; 2) the SBS, ARI and color change between direct and indirect bonding; and 3) the enamel roughness (ER) between 12-blade bur and aluminum oxide polisher debonding methods. Methods: Seventy bovine incisors were distributed in seven groups: control (no bonding), direct (DTBX), and 5 indirect bonding (ITBX, IZ350, ISONDHI, ISEP, and ITBXp). Transbond XT Primer was used in the DTBX, ITBX, and ITBXp groups, flow resin Z350 in the IZ350 group, Sondhi in the ISONDHI group, and SEP primer in the ISEP group. SBS, ARI, and ER were evaluated. The adhesive remnant was removed using a low-speed tungsten bur in all groups except the ITBXp, in which an aluminum oxide polisher was used. After coffee staining, color evaluations were performed using a spectrophotometer immediately after staining and prior to bonding. Results: ISONDHI and ISEP showed significantly lower SBS (p < 0.01). DTBX had a greater number of teeth with all the adhesive on the enamel (70%), compared with the indirect bonding groups (0–30%). The ER in the ITBX and ITBXp groups was found to be greater because of both clean-up techniques used. Conclusions: Direct and indirect bonding have similar results and all the primers used show satisfactory adhesion strength. Use of burs and polishers increases the ER, but polishers ensure greater integrity of the initial roughness. Resin tags do not change the color of the teeth.[Korean J Orthod 2018;48(4):245-252]

Contribution of Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation for the Diagnosis of HTLV-1-Associated Myelopathy/Tropical Spastic Paraparesis

Luciana Cristina Matos Cunha,Maurício Campelo Tavares,Carlos Julio Tierra Criollo,Ludimila Labanca,Clarissa Cardoso dos Santos Couto Paz,Henrique Resende Martins,Anna Bárbara de Freitas Carneiro-Proie 대한신경과학회 2013 Journal of Clinical Neurology Vol.9 No.4

Background and Purpose Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) is a low-cost and safe examination for testing the vestibulospinal pathway. Human T-lymphotropic virus 1 (HTLV-1)-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP) is a slowly progressive disease that affects the vestibulospinal tract early in its course. This study compared the electromyographic (EMG) responses triggered by GVS of asymptomatic HTLV-1-infected subjects and subjects with HAM/TSP. Methods Bipolar galvanic stimuli (400 ms and 2 mA) were applied to the mastoid processes of 39 subjects (n=120 stimulations per subject, with 60 from each lower limb). Both the short latency (SL) and medium latency (ML) components of the EMG response were recorded from the soleus muscles of 13 healthy, HTLV-1-negative adults (56±5 years, mean±SD), and 26 individuals infected with HTLV-1, of whom 13 were asymptomatic (56±8 years) and 13 had HAM/TSP (60±6 years). Results The SL and ML EMG components were 55±4 and 112±10 ms, respectively, in the group of healthy subjects, 61±6 and 112±10 ms and in the HTLV-1-asymptomatic group, and 67±8 and 130±3 ms in the HAM/TSP group (p=0.001). The SL component was delayed in 4/13 (31%) of the examinations in the HTLV-1-asymptomatic group, while the ML component was normal in all of them. In the HAM/TSP group, the most common alteration was the absence of waves. Conclusions A pattern of abnormal vestibular-evoked EMG responses was found in HTLV1-neurological disease, ranging from delayed latency among asymptomatic carriers to the absence of a response in HAM/TSP. GVS may contribute to the early diagnosis and monitoring of nontraumatic myelopathies.

OsAMT1.3 expression alters rice ammonium uptake kinetics and root morphology

Leandro Martins Ferreira,Vinicius Miranda de Souza,Orlando Carlos Huertas Tavares,Everaldo Zonta,Claudete Santa-Catarina,Sonia Regina de Souza,Manlio Silvestre Fernandes,Leandro Azevedo Santos 한국식물생명공학회 2015 Plant biotechnology reports Vol.9 No.4

High-affinity ammonium transporters (AMT1) are responsible for ammonium (NH4 ?) acquisition and/or perception in the micromolar range, and their expressions can be differentially regulated by nitrogen (N) availability. The present study characterised the functions of the rice (Oryza sativa) OsAMT1.3 transporter to understand its contribution to NH4+ acquisition and plant adaptation to environments with low N availability. Transgenic rice plants were obtained to study the activity of the OsAMT1.3 promoter (POsAMT1.3:GFP:GUS) and the overexpression of the OsAMT1.3 gene (UBIL:OsAMT1.3:3xHA) in plants. The OsAMT1.3 promoter activity was induced strongly in the absence of N and occurred primarily in the zones of lateral root emission and root tips. Anatomical sections of the segment of root tips and the middle third showed a differential pattern of OsAMT1.3 activity. Analysis of the OsAMT1.1–1.3 transporter expression profiles indicated that overexpression of OsAMT1.3 positively affected OsAMT1.2 expression. When subjected to a low N supply, plants overexpressing OsAMT1.3 showed lower KM and Cmin values. Additionally, these lines showed longer roots with a higher area, volume, and number of tips. The data suggested that OsAMT1.3 is involved in the ability of rice plants to adapt to low NH4+ supplies.

Effectiveness and safety of rotary and reciprocating kinematics for retreatment of curved root canals: a systematic review of in vitro studies

Simões Lucas Pinho,Reis-Prado Alexandre Henrique dos,Bueno Carlos Roberto Emerenciano,Viana Ana Cecília Diniz,Duarte Marco Antônio Húngaro,Cintra Luciano Tavares Angelo,Lemos Cleidiel Aparecido Araújo 대한치과보존학회 2022 Restorative Dentistry & Endodontics Vol.47 No.2

Objectives This systematic review (register-osf.io/wg7ba) compared the efficacy and safety of rotary and reciprocating kinematics in the removal of filling material from curved root canals. Materials and Methods Only in vitro studies evaluating both kinematics during retreatment were included. A systematic search (PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and other databases, until January 2021), data extraction, and risk of bias analysis (Joanna Briggs Institute checklist) were performed. Efficacy in filling removal was the primary outcome. Results The search resulted in 2,795 studies, of which 15 were included. Efficacy was measured in terms of the remaining filling material and the time required for this. Nine studies evaluated filling material removal, of which 7 found no significant differences between rotary and reciprocating kinematics. Regarding the time for filling removal, 5 studies showed no difference between both kinematics, 2 studies showed faster results with rotary systems, and other 2 showed the opposite. No significant differences were found in apical transportation, centering ability, instrument failure, dentin removed and extruded debris. A low risk of bias was observed. Conclusions This review suggests that the choice of rotary or reciprocating kinematics does not influence the efficacy of filling removal from curved root canals. Further studies are needed to compare the kinematics safety in curved root canals. Effect of Euterpe oleracea Mart. (Açaí) Oil on Dyslipidemia Caused by Cocos nucifera L. Saturated Fat in Wistar Rats

        Belmira S. Faria e Souza,Helison O. Carvalho,Talisson Taglialegna,Albenise Santana A. Barros,Edilson Leal da Cunha,Irlon Maciel Ferreira,Hady Keita,Andres Navarrete,Jose Carlos Tavares Carvalho 한국식품영양과학회 2017 Journal of medicinal food Vol.20 No.9

Dyslipidemia is caused by disturbances in lipid metabolism that lead to chronic elevations of serum lipids, especially low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol and triglycerides, increasing the risk of metabolic syndrome, obesity, diabetes, atherogenic processes, and cardiovascular diseases. The oil from the fruits of Euterpe oleracea (OFEO) is rich in unsaturated fatty acids with potential for treating alterations in lipid metabolism. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of OFEO on hyperlipidemia induced by Cocos nucifera L. saturated fat (GSC) in Wistar rats. Chromatographic profile showed that unsaturated fatty acids account for 66.08% in OFEO, predominately oleic acid (54.30%), and saturated fatty acids (palmitic acid 31.6%) account for 33.92%. GSC-induced dyslipidemia resulted in an increase in total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, glucose, and liver and abdominal fat, as well as atherogenic processes in the thoracic aorta. OFEO treatment did not reduce hypertriglyceridemia, but did reduce total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, thus contributing to the antiatherogenic action of OFEO. OFEO treatment inhibited the formation of atheromatous plaques in the vascular endothelium of the treated rats, as well as those who were treated with simvastatin. The results obtained suggest that OFEO has an antiatherogenic effect in a rat model of dyslipidemia.
