Two-stage ML-based Group Detection for Direct-sequence CDMA Systems

Buzzi, Stefano,Lops, Marco The Korea Institute of Information and Commucation 2003 Journal of communications and networks Vol.5 No.1

In this paper a two-stage maximum-likelihood (ML) detection structure for group detection in DS/CDMA systems is presented. The first stage of the receiver is a linear filter, aimed at suppressing the effect of the unwanted (i.e., out-of-grout) users' signals, while the second stage is a non-linear block, implementing a ML detection rule on the set of desired users signals. As to the linear stage, we consider both the decorrelating and the minimum mean square error approaches. Interestingly, the proposed detection structure turns out to be a generalization of Varanasi's group detector, to which it reduces when the system is synchronous, the signatures are linerly independent and the first stage of the receiver is a decorrelator. The issue of blind adaptive receiver implementation is also considered, and implementations of the proposed receiver based on the LMS algorithm, the RLS algorithm and subspace-tracking algorithms are presented. These adaptive receivers do not rely on any knowledge on the out-of group users' signals, and are thus particularly suited for rejection of out-of-cell interference in the base station. Simulation results confirm that the proposed structure achieves very satisfactory performance in comparison with previously derived receivers, as well as that the proposed blind adaptive algorithms achieve satisfactory performance.

      • What Will 5G Be?

        Andrews, Jeffrey G.,Buzzi, Stefano,Choi, Wan,Hanly, Stephen V.,Lozano, Angel,Soong, Anthony C. K.,Zhang, Jianzhong Charlie IEEE 2014 IEEE journal on selected areas in communications Vol.32 No.6

What will 5G be? What it will not be is an incremental advance on 4G. The previous four generations of cellular technology have each been a major paradigm shift that has broken backward compatibility. Indeed, 5G will need to be a paradigm shift that includes very high carrier frequencies with massive bandwidths, extreme base station and device densities, and unprecedented numbers of antennas. However, unlike the previous four generations, it will also be highly integrative: tying any new 5G air interface and spectrum together with LTE and WiFi to provide universal high-rate coverage and a seamless user experience. To support this, the core network will also have to reach unprecedented levels of flexibility and intelligence, spectrum regulation will need to be rethought and improved, and energy and cost efficiencies will become even more critical considerations. This paper discusses all of these topics, identifying key challenges for future research and preliminary 5G standardization activities, while providing a comprehensive overview of the current literature, and in particular of the papers appearing in this special issue.

A case of endometrial glassy cell carcinoma: a rare entity which necessitates of better understanding

        Clelia Callegari,Paola Algeri,Antonella Buzzi,Teresio Motta,Cinzia Manfredini,Sonia Maria Rota 대한산부인과학회 2019 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.62 No.6

Endometrial glassy cell carcinoma (EGCC) is a rare neoplasm, accounting for 0.5% of the carcinomas in theendometrium, composed of cells with granular eosinophilic or amphophilic cytoplasm, giving it a ground glassappearance. Till date, only 14 cases of this carcinoma have been reported. In this report, we have described a caseof EGCC to help define standard diagnostic criteria and better understand the course, ideal treatment, and accurateprognosis of this disease. We report a case of a 64-year-old woman diagnosed with EGCC after an abnormal papsmear. She underwent a hysteroscopy, which led to the histological diagnosis. Laparotomic total hysterectomy andbilateral salpingo-oophorectomy were performed with pelvic lymphadenectomy and peritoneal and omental biopsies. Final pathological examination confirmed the initial diagnosis. Pelvic nodes removed during surgery and peritonealand omental biopsies were negative for tumor cells. Treatment was considered appropriate and the patient did notrequire additional therapies. She was subsequently assigned to clinical follow-up and is alive, with no evidence of thedisease.

A secondary abdominal pregnancy with unusual placental implantation in the fallopian tube: a diagnostic challenge

        Algeri Paola,Nicoli Elena,Rota Sonia Maria,Caruso Orlando,Manfredini Cinzia,Buzzi Antonella 대한산부인과학회 2018 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.61 No.1

We reported a case of secondary abdominal pregnancy with placental implantation into the fallopian tube, diagnosed at 16 weeks, in a woman admitted to the emergency room complaining of syncopal attacks. The best approach would be termination of the pregnancy, taking into consideration the high risk to the mother and the low possibility of alive and healthy birth. We had to perform an urgent surgical intervention due to the fact that the patient was in a clinically unstable condition, which was related to hemoperitoneum. If placental implantation is on abdominal organs or vessel the best approach would be to ligate the cord and to leave placenta in situ. Taking into consideration the place of placental implant, the removal of the fallopian tube with the placenta was the safest approach in this case. The best and most acceptable form of treatment would be individualized in case of rare form of ectopic pregnancy.

Morpho-histological and ultrastructural study on direct somatic embryogenesis of Capsicum chinense Jacq. in liquid medium

        Aviles-Vinas, Susana A.,Lecona-Guzman, Carlos A.,Canto-Flick, Adriana,Lopez-Erosa, Stephanie,Santana-Buzzy, Nancy 한국식물생명공학회 2013 Plant biotechnology reports Vol.7 No.3

Somatic embryo-like structures were produced from the hypocotyls of aseptic plants of Capsicum chinense. Different concentrations of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (0, 4.5, $9.05{\mu}M$), several exposure times of the explant to this auxin (15, 30, 45, 60 days) and the development of somatic embryos cultured in a solid and/or liquid medium were evaluated. As a result, a novel system of regeneration via direct somatic embryogenesis in liquid medium was established, with an efficiency of $1.77{\times}10^4$ somatic embryos per liter of medium. Critical stages of embryogenesis, including cellular acquisition of morphogenetic competence, suspensor formation, and development and maturation of somatic embryos, were identified by histological analysis and scanning electron microscopy. Our results show a promising new outlook on the in vitro regeneration of this species. Contrary to what has been reported to date for the Capsicum genus, it is a species of plants with higher embryogenic potential in vitro.

Chemical Composition and Antinociceptive Potential of Campomanesia reitziana Fruits

Luciane Angela Nottar Nesello,Adriana Campos,Theodoro Wagner,Arturo San Feliciano,Fatima de Campos Buzzi,Valdir Cechinel Filho 한국식품영양과학회 2016 Journal of medicinal food Vol.19 No.5

The methanolic extract from Campomanesia reitziana fruits and the main active principle, identified as 4',6'-dihydroxy-3',5'-dimethyl-2'-methoxy chalcone or dimethyl cardamonin (1), exhibited pronounced antinociceptive effects against two models of pain in mice. Compound 1 caused dose-dependent inhibition of abdominal constrictions, with a calculated ID50 value of 8.1 (6.5–10.1) μmol/kg (i.p.), being about 16-fold more potent than two reference analgesic drugs. Methanolic extract and 1 were also effective against the formalin model, inhibiting both phases of pain, causing reductions of 39.9% and 26.8% (extract, 10 mg/kg) and 52.9% and 57.6% (compound 1, 5 mg/kg) for the first and second phases, respectively.
