A novel method to synthesize a single topology for dynamically loaded members

Lakshmi Srinivas G,Arshad Javed 대한기계학회 2021 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.35 No.4

A topology optimization problem is framed using boundary conditions that involve load magnitude and direction. The generated optimal topology is dependent on the direction of load rather than magnitude. Thus, for a dynamic situation, multiple optimal topologies are obtained. This study proposes a method to generate a single superior topology using superimposition and post-refinement by Gaussian image-processing technique. The dynamic loading condition is discretized using (a) uniform and (b) performance-based non-uniform criteria. Three image-processing parameters are applied to retain the desired volume fraction and simplify the topology from a manufacturing aspect. A one-degree-of-freedom manipulator link is considered as an example. Solid isotropic material with penalization method is selected to update the design variables. The programmable logic controller with human-machine interfacebased experimental setup is used to validate the simulation results. The synthesized topology (50 % mass reduction) from the non-uniform increment method performs best among all uniform approaches and individual topologies.

Parametric Performance Investigation on Membraneless Microfluidic Paper Fuel Cell with Graphite Composed Pencil Stoke Electrodes

Lanka Tata Rao,Satish Kumar Dubey,Arshad Javed,Sanket Goel 한국정밀공학회 2021 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.22 No.1

Membraneless Microfluidic Paper Fuel Cells (MMPFCs) are promising devices to harvest energy for various portable applications. This is primarily because such devices eliminate the need for membrane, and external pumps due to the builtin co-laminar flow, and embedded capillaries, respectively. However, these devices have enormous scope to optimize their performance. Herein, investigations on MMPFC have been carried out with varying electrode separation, whereby cellulose papers acts as the microchannel of MMPFC. Here, various grades of carbon-supported graphite pencils serve as electrodes, formic acid acts as a fuel, and sulphuric acid works as an electrolyte. Oxygen from the atmospheric air acts as an oxidant for ionic exchange under co-laminar fl ow in the MMPFC. These MMPFCs with the optimized configuration provide enhanced energy densities with different grades of the microchannel material along with variation in electrode separation. Leveraging grade 1 Whatman cellulose paper as MMPFC microchannel with 1 mm electrode separation, the MMPFC generates energy with a maximum open-circuit potential of 0.49 V, a maximum current density of 2.45 mAcm −2 and power density of 0.26 mWcm −2 .

      • Use of Output Specifications in PFI Housing Projects - How They Differ from Prescriptive Specifications

Lam, Patrick T.I.,Chan, Albert P.C.,Akintoye, Akintola,Javed, Arshad Ali Korea Institute of Construction Engineering and Ma 2011 Journal of construction engineering and project ma Vol.1 No.2

In many parts of the world, low cost housing used to be built and maintained by the governments, based on designs and detail specifications prepared by the public sector with construction carried out by contractors. Results vary due to differences in design standards, workmanship and property management, depending also on the neighbourhood's care of the estates and their pattern of usage. In the UK, where Private Finance Initiative (PFI) has been used for infrastructure projects, there have been successful cases of city estate being transformed by PFI. These PFI housing schemes involve new-build, refurbishment as well as facility management. Unlike traditional construction, which is based on prescriptive specifications, PFI housing is based on output specifications. A study has been undertaken to compare the two specification approaches as they are applied to housing estate. Results are enlightening and serve as good reference to cities such as Hong Kong SAR and Singapore, where public housing provisions have been a major concern of their citizens as the building stock gets older.

Genome-wide identififi cation and characterization of a plant-specifific Dof transcription factor gene family in olive (Olea europaea) and its comparison with Arabidopsis

        Mariyam,Muhammad Shafiq,Muhammad Haseeb,Rana Muhammad Atif,Syed Agha Armaghan Asad Abbas Naqvi,Numan Ali,Muhammad Arshad Javed,Fizza Gillani,Muhammad Saleem Haider 한국원예학회 2021 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.62 No.6

DNA binding with one fi nger (Dof) proteins are encoded by a ubiquitous plant-specifi c transcription factor gene family thatplays a critical role in various biological processes including fruit ripening and organogenesis. The wild olive ( Olea europaeavar. sylvestris v1.0 ) genome was used to identify Dof gene family members using a set of bioinformatics tools. Gene structure, chromosome locations, phylogeny, protein motifs, miRNA targets and tissue-specifi c expression patterns were analyzed. Here, we identifi ed 51 potential Dof genes unevenly distributed on all chromosomes and a few scaff olds. Dof proteins in oliveclustered into eight subgroups (D1, B2, C3, C2.2, C1, C2.1, B1, and A) based on the established Arabidopsis classifi cation. The prevalence of segmental duplication was observed as compared to tandem duplication, and this was the main factorunderlying the expansion of the Dof gene family in olive. Tissue-specifi c expression profi ling of Oeu Dof genes revealed thatthe majority of Oeu Dof genes were highly expressed in fl owers, stem and meristem tissues. In seed and meristem tissues,cis-regulatory element (CRE) analysis revealed the presence of elements that are specifi cally responsive to light, circadian, auxin, and ABA. In addition, a comparative analysis between Dof genes in olive and Arabidopsis revealed eight groups orsub-families, although the C3 group of Arabidopsis was not represented in olive. This extensive genome evaluation of theDof gene family in olive presents a reference for cloning and functional analysis of the members of this gene family.
