      • Lack of Utility of Cytokeratins in Differentiating Pseudocarcinomatous Hyperplasia of Granular Cell Tumors from Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Al-Eryani, Kamal,Karasneh, Jumana,Sedghizadeh, Parish P,Ram, Saravanan,Sawair, Faleh Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.4

Granular cell tumor (GCT) of the oral cavity is a benign lesion. Half of oral GCTs demonstrate pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia (PCH) of the mucosa which can mimic invasive islands of oral squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Such similarity can be confusing when diagnosing or evaluating the two conditions, potentially leading to misdiagnosis or misclassification. Indeed, several misdiagnosed cases of oral GCT have been reported in the literature as OSCC or malignant oral GCT that resulted in unnecessary aggressive treatment for the affected patients. The aim of this study was to investigate if the cytokeratin pattern of the PCH can help in differentiating GCT from oral SCC. To distinguish between these two entities, we examined 12 patient specimens of oral GCT-PCH and oral SCC histologically and via immunohistochemistry (IHC) for CK13, CK17 and P75. The results suggest that the cytokeratin profile of PCH is similar to that of oral SCC. Therefore, consideration of IHC findings for epithelial markers alone may lead to erroneous diagnosis; thus, the presence of the granular tumor underneath the PCH and its immunopositivity for P75 or other neural definition markers can be essential to identify the underlying tumor and exclude oral SCC. Finally we recommend more studies on the molecular biology of PCH to understand how it can mimic oral SCC histologically without harboring its malignant phenotype clinically, which could have significant translational potential for understanding invasive oral SCC.

      • Nominal flexural strength of high-strength concrete beams

        Al-Kamal, Mustafa Kamal Techno-Press 2019 Advances in concrete construction Vol.7 No.1

The conventional ACI rectangular stress block is developed on the basis of normal-strength concrete column tests and it is still being used for the design of high-strength concrete members. Many research papers found in the literature indicate that the nominal strength of high-strength concrete members appears to be over-predicted by the ACI rectangular stress block. This is especially true for HSC columns. The general shape of the stress-strain curve of high-strength concrete becomes more likely as a triangle. A triangular stress block is, therefore, introduced in this paper. The proposed stress block is verified using a database which consists of 52 tested singly reinforced high-strength concrete beams having concrete strength above 55 MPa (8,000 psi). In addition, the proposed model is compared with models of various design codes and proposals of researchers found in the literature. The nominal flexural strengths computed using the proposed stress block are in a good agreement with the tested data as well as with that obtained from design codes models and proposals of researchers.

Latent Semantic Analysis Approach for Document Summarization Based on Word Embeddings

( Kamal Al-sabahi ),( Zhang Zuping ),( Yang Kang ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2019 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.13 No.1

Since the amount of information on the internet is growing rapidly, it is not easy for a user to find relevant information for his/her query. To tackle this issue, the researchers are paying much attention to Document Summarization. The key point in any successful document summarizer is a good document representation. The traditional approaches based on word overlapping mostly fail to produce that kind of representation. Word embedding has shown good performance allowing words to match on a semantic level. Naively concatenating word embeddings makes common words dominant which in turn diminish the representation quality. In this paper, we employ word embeddings to improve the weighting schemes for calculating the Latent Semantic Analysis input matrix. Two embedding-based weighting schemes are proposed and then combined to calculate the values of this matrix. They are modified versions of the augment weight and the entropy frequency that combine the strength of traditional weighting schemes and word embedding. The proposed approach is evaluated on three English datasets, DUC 2002, DUC 2004 and Multilingual 2015 Single-document Summarization. Experimental results on the three datasets show that the proposed model achieved competitive performance compared to the state-of-the-art leading to a conclusion that it provides a better document representation and a better document summary as a result.

Demography of Juniperus phoenicea L. and Juniperus procera Hochst. ex Endl. populations at Sarrawat Mountains, Southwest of Saudi Arabia

Al-Sodany Yassin Mohamed,Al-Yasi Hatim Matooq,Shaltout Salma Kamal 한국생태학회 2024 Journal of Ecology and Environment Vol.48 No.1

Background: The present study aims to identify the pattern and size of Juniperus species (Juniperus phoenicea and J. procera) in the natural forests in terms of tree dimension, size structure and density, discussing the existing both species in Sarrawat Mountains for suggesting the preservation, conservation, and sustainable development. For achieving this, the height and mean crown diameter of each individual was measured based on 2–4 diameter measurements per ind. (506 ind. for J. phoenicea and 322 ind. for J. procera). Results: The size index of both species was classified into 7 classes: the first (< 100 cm) and the second (100–200 cm) classes were chosen to represent the juvenile stage. The total mean of the J. phoenicea population increased with the increase of altitude, while the whole population decreased after altitude of 2,000 m. The total mean of the J. procera population increased with the increase of altitude till altitude of 2,000–2,100 m. Conclusions: The present study indicated that both of species grow at low altitudes, they only grow at altitude above 1,700 m above sea level. The present study indicated that the study area has the two Juniperus spp. (J. phoenicea and J. procera) associated together all over the area. The results were discussed and compared with other related studies.

Nominal axial and flexural strengths of high-strength concrete columns

Mustafa Kamal Al-Kamal 사단법인 한국계산역학회 2019 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.24 No.1

The ACI building code is allowing for higher strength reinforcement and concrete compressive strengths. The nominal strength of high-strength concrete columns is over predicted by the current ACI 318 rectangular stress block and is increasingly unconservative as higher strength materials are used. Calibration of a rectangular stress block to address this condition leads to increased computational complexity. A triangular stress block, derived from the general shape of the stressstrain curve for high-strength concrete, provides a superior solution. The nominal flexural and axial strengths of 150 highstrength concrete columns tests are calculated using the proposed stress distribution and compared with the predicted strength using various design codes and proposals of other researchers. The proposed triangular stress model provides similar level of accuracy and conservativeness and is easily incorporated into current codes.

Dietary and Lifestyle Factors Associated with Gastric and Pancreatic Cancers: A Case-Control Study

        Narmeen Al-Awwad,Sabika Allehdan,Tareq Al-Jaberi,Ahmad Hushki,Yazan Albtoush,Kamal Bani-Hani,Reema Fayez Tayyem 한국식품영양과학회 2021 Preventive Nutrition and Food Science Vol.26 No.1

Gastric cancer (GC) and pancreatic cancer (PC) are the third and seventh most likely cancers to cause death worldwide. We aimed to determine the dietary and lifestyle factors of patients with GC or PC and their associated risk among Jordanians. This case-control study enrolled 587 adults (patients with PC, 101; patients with GC, 172; healthy controls, 314) between March 2015 and August 2018, who were assessed using interview-based personal and physical activity questionnaires. Multivariable logistic regression models were taken as measures for predictors of GC and PC risk. We showed that GC and PC patients had higher pre-diagnosis body-mass indexes, a greater proportion smoked and had a family history of cancer than controls. Furthermore, consumption of two snacks [odds ratios (OR)=0.44, 95% confidence intervals (CI): 0.23∼0.85], three snacks (OR=0.04, 95% CI: 0.01∼0.23) and no meals eaten outside (OR=0.31, 95% CI: 0.09∼0.99) showed a protective effect against GC, and consumption of three snacks (OR=0.08, 95% CI: 0.02∼0.40) reduced significantly the risk of PC. These results suggest that bodyweight, physical activity, smoking, and family history of cancer are among factors that affect GC and PC risk among Jordanians.

Stock Market Reaction to the COVID-19 Pandemic: Evidence from Kuwait

Abdullah AL-MUTAIRI,Abdullah AL FALAH,Hani NASER,Kamal NASER 한국유통과학회 2022 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.9 No.3

The purpose of this study is to examine the Kuwaiti Stock Exchange’s (KDE) response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the precautions taken by Kuwaiti authorities to protect their citizens and other residents. To achieve this objective, daily data from four different indexes published by the Kuwait Stock Exchange (KSE) for the period between 24 February and 30 June 2020, as well as daily data on the number of people infected with COVID-19, the daily number of recovered people, the daily number of deaths, lockdown days, and days the country was under curfew. The findings show a significant positive association between the daily recovery of persons infected by COVID-19 and all indexes published by the KSE except for the Boursa Kuwait Main Market 50, where the association was positive but insignificant. A negative and significant association was also found between the closure of the country and each of the four indexes. Although the curfew imposed by the Kuwaiti authorities at an early stage of the pandemic appeared to have a negative effect on the four indexes, the level of association was statistically significant only in the cases of the Main Market index and Boursa Kuwait Main Market 50 index.

Solar light-based photocatalytic removal of CV and RhB dyes using Bi and Al doped SrFe12O19 NPs and antibacterial properties

        Qasim Raza,Ismat Bibi,Farzana Majid,Shagufta Kamal,Sadia Ata,Aamir Ghafoor,Muhammad I. Arshad,Samiah H. Al-Mijalli,Arif Nazir,Munawar Iqbal 한국공업화학회 2023 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.118 No.-

The SrBixAlxFe12-2xO19 (x = 0.0–1.0) nano-hexaferrites were prepared via facile micro-emulsion methodand ferroelectric, dielectric, magnetic, photocatalytic and antibacterial properties were investigatedbased on doping contacts. The XRD analysis confirmed the hexagonal single-phase material with P63/mmc space group. P-E loops indicated the higher polarization and coercivity values for doped materials. VSM results showed that maximum and remnant magnetizations were quite high for undoped materialwhile coercivity was low than doped hexaferrite. Optical band gap was reduced to 1.63 eV from 2 eV(pristine) for highly doped composition. PL intensity showed a sharp decline with doping, which indicatedthe better inhibition of charge carriers on doping. The photo-catalytic activity of pristine and thedoped SrBixAlxFe12-2xO19 was investigated using Crystal Violet and Rhodamine B dyes under solar irradiation. SrAlxBixFe12-2xO19 (x = 1.0) exhibited improved catalytic efficiency and up to 83 and 86 (%) removalof CV and RhB dyes with rate constant of 0.047 and 0.048 (min1), respectively. Highly doped ferrite alsoshowed enhanced bactericidal action against S. aureus and E. coli strains. Superior mineralization of textiledyes and good antimicrobial activity of Bi and Al doped strontium nano-hexaferrites make such materialas crucial candidate for solar light responsive photocatalytic and antimicrobial applications.

Experimental and numerical investigation of reinforced concrete beams containing vertical openings

        Jafarali Parol,Ammar Ben-Nakhi,Shaikha Al-Sanad,Jamal Al-Qazweeni,Hamad J. Al-Duaij,Hasan Kamal 국제구조공학회 2019 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.72 No.3

Horizontal openings in reinforced concrete (RC) beams are quite often used to accommodate service pipelines. Several research papers are available in the literature describing their effect. RC beams with vertical openings are commonly used to accommodate service lines in residential buildings in Kuwait. However, there are lack of design guidelines and best practices reported in the literature for RC beams with vertical openings, whereas the detailed guidelines are available for beams with horizontal openings. In the present paper, laboratory experiments are conducted on nine RC beams with and without vertical openings. Parametric study has been carried out using nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) with changes in the diameter of the opening, various positions of the opening along the length and width of the beam, edge distance, etc. 50 finite element simulations were conducted. The FEA results are verified using the results from the laboratory experiments. The study showed that the load carrying capacity of the beam is reduced by 20% for the RC beam with vertical openings placed near the center of the beam compared to a solid beam without an opening. Significant reduction in load carrying capacity is observed for beams with an opening near the support (≈15%). The overall stiffness of the beam, crack pattern and failure modes were not affected due to the presence of the vertical opening. Furthermore, an artificial neural network (ANN) analysis is carried out using the FEA generated data. The results and observations from the ANN and FEA are in good agreement with experimental results.
