Effect of reducing dietary crude protein level on growth performance, blood profiles, nutrient digestibility, carcass traits, and odor emissions in growing-finishing pigs

Aaron Niyonsaba,Xing Hao Jin,Yoo Yong Kim Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2023 Animal Bioscience Vol.36 No.10

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of a low-protein diet on growth performance, carcass traits, nutrient digestibility, blood profiles, and odor emissions in growing-finishing pigs. Methods: A total of 126 crossbred pigs ([Yorkshire×Landrace]×Duroc) with an average body weight (BW) of 38.56±0.53 kg were used for a 14-week feeding trial. Experimental pigs were allotted to one of 6 treatments in 3 replicates of 7 pigs per pen in a randomized complete block design. Pigs were fed each treatment diet with different levels of crude protein (CP). Phase 1 (early growing): 14%, 15%, 16%, 17%, 18%, 19%; phase 2 (late growing): 13%, 14%, 15%, 16%, 17%, 18%; phase 3 (early finishing): 12%, 13%, 14%, 15%, 16%, 17%; phase 4 (late finishing): 11%, 12%, 13%, 14%, 15%, 16%. All experimental diets in each phase were contained the same concentration of lysine (Lys), methionine (Met), threonine (Thr), and tryptophan (Trp). Results: Over the entire experimental period, there was no significant difference in BW, average daily feed intake, and gain-to-feed ratio among all treatments (p>0.05), but a quadratic effect (p = 0.04) was observed in average daily gain (ADG) during the late finishing phase with higher ADG in Group D. Blood urea nitrogen concentration linearly increased with an increase in dietary CP levels (p<0.01). Regarding nutrient digestibility, excreted nitrogen in urine and feces and nitrogen retention linearly increased as the CP level increased (p<0.01). A linear effect was observed with increasing CP levels in amines, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide in odor emissions (p<0.01). No significant effects were observed in the measurements of carcass traits and meat characteristics (p>0.05). Conclusion: In phase feeding, reducing the CP level to 14% in early-growing pigs, 13% in late-growing pigs, 12% in early-finishing pigs, and 11% in late-finishing pigs is recommended.

Review on Challenges and Opportunities of Poultry Production Systems, Genetic Resources, and Improvement in Rwanda

        Jean Pierre Munyaneza1,Jean de Dieu Rukundo,Aaron Niyonsaba 한국동물유전육종학회 2021 한국동물유전육종학회지 Vol.5 No.4

The most common poultry production system in Rwanda is an extensive system based on rearing indigenous chicken with low productivity. The objective of the present review was to highlight the challenges and opportunities of poultry farming, genetic resources, and strategies to improve poultry production in Rwanda. Poultry farming in Rwanda is facing many challenges including, feed scarcity, dependency on day-old chick imports, and poor access to credit, poor housing, and poor local genetic breeds and diseases. On the other hand, it presents opportunities such as active participation of public agencies in livestock research and improvement, higher chicken meat acceptance, and low start-up capital. Rwanda needs to pay more attention to its diversified indigenous chicken to select the best parent stocks to improve poultry production.

This study was to be conducted to investigate the effects of dietary fiber sources supplementation in lactating sow diet on physiological responses, farrowing duration, serum glucose level, and milk composition. A total of 24 F1 multiparous sows (Yorkshire × Landrace) were allotted to one of 4 treatments considering body weight, backfat thickness, and parity in a complete randomized design (CRD) with 6 replicates. Treatments were 1) Control: corn-SBM-DDGS based diet; 2) BP: corn-SBM-DDGS based diet + beet pulp 3%; 3) BPPK: corn-SBM-DDGS based diet + beet pulp 1.5% + palm kernel meal 2%; 4) PK: corn-SBM-DDGS based diet + palm kernel meal 4%. As a result, during the lactation period, dietary fiber sources did not significantly differ in body weight and backfat thickness of lactating sows and the growth performance of piglets. Numerical shorter Farrowing duration was observed when dietary fiber sources were provided, especially BPPK treatment shortening farrowing time about 28 minutes compared with control treatment. In relation to the serum glucose level of sows, BPPK treatment had higher serum glucose level than other treatments at 24 h postpartum (p < 0.05). In an analysis of fecal fiber contents, BP and BPPK treatments were lower than PK and control treatments (p < 0.05). Consequently, dietary fiber supplementation with beet pulp 1.5% and palm kernel meal 2% in the lactation diet may improve the energy status of sows to reduce the farrowing duration and enhance the growth of piglets.
