A safe and cost-effective PMMA carbon source for MgB<sub>2</sub>

Carbon is proven to be very effective in pinning the magnetic vortices and improving the superconducting performance of $MgB_2$ at high fields. In this work, we have used polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) polymer as a safe and cost effective carbon source. The effects of molecular weight of PMMA on crystal structure, microstructure as well as on superconducting properties of $MgB_2$ were studied. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that there is a noticeable shift in (100) and (110) Bragg reflections towards higher angles, while no shift was observed in (002) reflections for $MgB_2$ doped with different molecular weights of PMMA. This indicates that carbon could be substituted in the boron honeycomb layers without affecting the interlayer interactions. As compared to undoped $MgB_2$, substantial enhancement in $J_c(H)$ properties was obtained for PMMA-doped $MgB_2$ samples both at 5 K and 20 K. The enhancement could be attributed to the effective carbon substitution for boron and the refinement of crystallite size by PMMA doping.
Seismic qualification using the updated finite element model of structures

The standard practice is to seismically qualify the safety related equipment and structural components used in the nuclear power plants. Among several qualification approaches the qualification by the analysis using finite element (FE) method is the most common approach used in practice. However the predictions by the FE model for a structure is known to show significant deviations from the dynamic behaviour of 'as installed' structure in many cases. Considering such limitation, few researchers have advocated re-qualification of such structures after installation at site to enhance the confidence in qualification vis-$\grave{a}$-vis plant safety. For such an exercise the validation of FE model with experimental modal data is important. A validated FE model can be obtained by the Model Updating methods in conjugation with the in-situ experimental modal data. Such a model can then be used for qualification. Seismic analysis using the updated FE model and its advantage has been presented through an example of an in-core component - a perforated horizontal tube of a nuclear reactor.

A new record of monogeneric family Vietnamellidae (Insecta: Ephemeroptera) is established for India with Vietnamella sp. A described based on the larvae from Arunachal Pradesh, India. This species can be distinguished from other known species of this genus in the larval stage by the following combination of characters: (i) outer pair of projections in head large and stout, triangular, cone-shaped with serrated spines; (ii) posterolateral angles of abdominal terga 2–9 extended into sharp projections; (iii) caudal filaments pale yellowish brown with dense lateral setae on inner and outer margins of middle part; (iv) femora of mid- and hind-legs broader; and (v) second segment of the maxillary palpi shorter than first segment.

Sericin were isolated and characterized from tasar cocoons raised in three different food plants i.e. Terminalia arjuna, T. tomentosa and Shorea robusta for its applications. Their molecular composition, structure and physical nature were determined by elemental analysis, amino acid analysis, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) analysis. These results show that tasar food plants influence the physical and chemical properties of sericin. Further, sericin isolated from cocoons of S. robusta food plant shows better antioxidant potential and inhibition of tyrosinase, elastase and glutathione-S-transferase activity than other food plants. This may be attributed to its amino acid variations and associated phenolic content. The present study appears to be useful in utilizing tasar sericin as a potential bio-molecule for its prospective utili zation in pharmaceuticals and its associated fields.

Prostate cancer (CaP) is a common reproductive cancer among men. This study was conducted to correlate the cancer incidence with Gangetic zone and to correlate the tumor marker prostate specific antigen (PSA) level in serum with different age groups and stage of malignancy. Patients suffering from CaP in the pathology unit of Mahavir Cancer Sansthan (Hospital and Research Centre), Patna, Bihar, India were studied from June 2009 to May 2010. PSA level in the serum of CaP patients was estimated by ELISA method. CaP incidence was highly recorded in Gangetic zone than the non-Gangetic zone. Maximum patients were in the 56 - 75 years age group with a marked predominance. Results of PSA examination showed that serum PSA level was not correlating with the age of patient and stage of malignancy. Significantly, elevated level of more than 10 ng/ml of PSA was recorded among the studied cancer patients. In this study, it is concluded that Gangetic zone habitat have high risk of CaP and elevated level of PSA was marked in Bihar, India.

<P>The interesting physics and potential memory technologies resulting from topologically protected spin textures such as skyrmions have prompted efforts to discover new material systems that can host these kinds of magnetic structures. Here, we use the highly tunable magnetic properties of amorphous Fe/Gd multilayer films to explore the magnetic properties that lead to dipole-stabilized skyrmions and skyrmion lattices that form from the competition of dipolar field and exchange energy. Using both real space imaging and reciprocal space scattering techniques, we determined the range of material properties and magnetic fields where skyrmions form. Micromagnetic modeling closely matches our observation of small skyrmion features (similar to 50 to 70 nm) and suggests that these classes of skyrmions have a rich domain structure that is Bloch-like in the center of the film and more Neel-like towards each surface. Our results provide a pathway to engineer the formation and controllability of dipole skyrmion phases in a thin film geometry at different temperatures and magnetic fields.</P>
