In this study, to increase the mixing between flue gas and reducing agent, new shapes of NH₃ ejection nozzles are designed and experimentally and numerically tested. The nozzles have six holes perpendicular to the ambient flue gas flow and the tilting angle between direction of ambient flow and the hole axis is varied. To evaluate the mixing efficiency of the proposed nozzles, numerical and experimental tests are applied to several flow conditions comparing with single hole nozzle, which is commonly used in conventional SCR process. From the results the nozzle with tilted multi-holes has the large region of high turbulent intensity compared with conventional single hole nozzle. This is originated from the high vorticity near the upstream of the jet flow issuing from the hole. The high turbulent intensity and vorticity magnitude lead to enhanced mixing between flue gas and reducing agent. Hence, the most suitable moral ratio between NOx and reducing agent for the catalytic reaction can be obtained on behalf of the intensified scalar mixing within shorter physical mixing length.

The purpose of this study is to optimize the design of heat exchanger for condensing gas boiler. The characteristics of fluid flow and heat transfer for heat exchanger used in a condensing gas boiler were numerically studied. The distance between tubes(L), tube and fin shapes were selected as design parameters, and the effects of these parameters on heat transfer and fluid flow were investigated. From the results, recommended conditions for the optimal design of heat exchanger for the tube distance were about L=0.5∼1㎜.

Recently, environmental and energy issues become a matter of primary concern in the inside and outside of the country. In particular, attention has been paid to the fields of energy generation, supplying and consuming, etc. One of them in individual household is a gas fired boiler, which is necessary for heating. The two important technical trends of it are high-efficiency and eco-friendly system so, in the present article, the techniques to accomplish this are reviewed for condensing gas fired boiler in the state of the art.

The characteristics of turbulent flow and mixing in a small can type combustor are investigated by means of Large Eddy Simulation (LES). Attention is paid for a combustor having a baffle plate with oxidant injection and fuel injection holes and study is made for three cases of different baffle plate configurations. From the result, it is confirmed that mixing is promoted by interaction between the jets during their developing process and large vortical flows generated in the vicinity of the combustor wall or fuel jet front. This particular flow feature is effective to accelerate the slow mixing between fuel and oxidant suffering from low Reynolds number condition in such a small combustor. In particular, the vortical flow region ahead of fuel jet plays an important role for rapid mixing. Discussion is made for the time and space averaged turbulent flow and scalar quantities which show peculiar characteristics corresponding to different vortical flow structures for each baffle plate shapes.

Domestic gas boilers with high thermal efficiency and low concentration of CO and NOx in exhaust gas were developed in cooperation with several research institutes, universities, and companies. Integration and performance test results of the boiler systems will be presented in this paper, on the other hand development results of core parts like burners, heat exchangers and blowers in the boilers in others. The results showed both developed boilers with rectangular or cylindrical type of heat exchanger satisfied project objectives of thermal efficiency over 90% (SEDBUK, class A), NOx concentration of 50 ppm, and CO concentration of 40 ppm.
