Vol.11 No.1

Artemia often observed as a co-existing organism in the mass culture tank of marine rotifer. The rotifer and Atremia are commonly used as food organisms in the marine fish larvae rearing. In this study, interspecific relation between the rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis (formely called S-type) and anostracan Artemia of the two developmental stages (0 and 19 day old after hatching) were investigated in the larboratory. The population growth of B. rotundiformis and one of the stage (nauplius or adult) of Artemia in mixed culture was compared with that of each single species culture. Culture period was 16 days. Every two days, the number of organisms in each species was counted and transferred to a fresh medium containing $7{\times}10^5$cells/ml of food Nannochloropsis oculata. Culture volume, temperature, salinity and photoperiod were set at 40ml, $25^{\circ}C.$, 22ppt and 24h all dark except to observation time, respectively. The rotifer population growth was greatly decreased by co-existence with Artemia. The coexisting Artemia suppressed the rotifer population growth due to it's high filtering speed for food (N. oculata). This study suggested that contamination by Artemia must be prevented for the stable rotifer production in the rotifer mass culture tank.

Vol.22 No.-

The marine rotifer of Brachionus species has been used as live food organism for marine fish larval rearing. But the marine Brachionus rotifers were co-existing cultured in the rotifer mass culture system of larval rearing centers. This study focuses on the interspecific relationship between two common marine rotifer of Brachionus rotundifomis Tschugunoff and B. plicatilis 0. F. Muller for the stable rotifer culture. For experiment two Brachionus rotifer species were mono-species cultured by feeding monospecies cultured Nannochloropsis oculata. Population density of B. rotundifomis increased to the maximu of 1541.33ind. 40ml^(-1) on 8th days from the culture start in the B. rotundifoms single species culture. However. population density of B. rotundiformis decreased by co-existing of other Brachionus rotifer. B. plicatilis. Population density of B. pficatilis was also suppressed by co-existing other Brachionus rotifer, B. rotundihoms. These two species competed for their limited food source of N. oculata. As a result, both Brachionus rotifer species were suppressed by each other comparing with single species culture. These co-existing phenomenon of other Brachionus rotifer was acted as interference factor of rotifer growth and stable culture.

Biological Application of Two Protozoan Species, Euplotes sp. and Vorticella sp., for the Stable Culture of the Rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis in Laboratory Experiments of Inter- and Tripartite-Specific Relations

2012 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.15 No.3

Members of the ciliate group of protozoans are often observed in mass cultures of rotifers. In particular, Euplotes and Vorticella are common contaminating species. In this study, I examined the effect of the ciliates Euplotes sp. and Vorticella sp. on the growth of the rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis by conducting inter-specific and tripartite-specific mixed-culture experiments. The growth of rotifers was suppressed in co-existence with Euplotes sp. compared with monocultures of rotifers. However, Vorticella sp. promoted rotifer growth. Moreover, Vorticella sp. improved the growth of rotifers suppressed by Euplotes sp. contaminants. In 5-L semi-mass cultures of rotifers, growth of the contaminating protozoan Euplotes sp. was heavily suppressed by Vorticella sp. The stable maintenance of the rotifer culture ecosystem can be achieved by manipulating the types of contaminating protozoan species.

Vol.5 No.3

The complete postembryonic developments of copepodid stages of Paramphiascella vararensis T. Scott(Copepoda: Harpacticoida) are described and illustrated based on specimens cultured in laboratory. The copepodites of P. vararensis feed on powder of one of green macro-algae species Ulva pertusa. Developmental time from copepodid stage to adult (copepodid stage) is about 15 days with culture conditions of 33-34 ppt of salinity, 22-23$^{\circ}$C of temperature and feed on algae powder. Sexual characters of the species are distinct on the copepodid stage. Sexual characters appear in size, antennule, pereiopods of second and bases of the fifth and sixth legs. Males are considerably smaller than females in size. In the antennule, the fourth segment of the male extremely is modified and swollen for female. In the segment number of the endopod of second pereiopod, female has 3 segments while male bears 2 segments. The female has 3 setae while the male bears 2 setae on the inner lobe of basis of fifth leg. In the basis of sixth leg, the female has 2 setae while the male has 3 setae.

Characterization of a Unique New Strain Named the NFRDI N° 1 Rotifer Strain, a Brackish Brachionus Rotifer Collected from a South Korea Coastal Lagoon

2011 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.14 No.4

A new and a unique Brachionus rotifer was found in Hwajinpo coastal lagoon in Gangwon Province, South Korea. This Brachionus certainly originated from the wild rather than from aquaculture stations because Hwajinpo coastal lagoon has been under rigorous control as a military protected area and therefore could not have been contaminated by aquaculture stations. The new strain was identified as Brachionus rotundiformis based upon its morphological characteristics. The parthenogenetic female of this new rotifer strain typically shows characters similar to those of B. rotundiformis, such as the pot shape of the body, rounded dorsal plate compared with flattened ventral plate, elliptical mictic egg, four frontal spines, six pointed occipital spines, non-nodal foot, two toes, trophi typical of the Brachionus genus with five uncus plates resembling comb teeth, one wide symmetrical manubrium and ramus, and no stiffened spine as is seen in freshwater Brachionus rotifers. Moreover, its lorica was rather small in size compared with other common rotifer strains that serve as live-food organisms (Guam, Thai, and Bali strains). This new and unique Korean brackish rotifer, a B. rotundiformis strain, was therefore named the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute (NFRDI) N° 1 rotifer strain.

Survival Strategies of the Rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis for Coexisting with the Copepod Apocyclops borneoensis in Laboratory Culture

2012 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.15 No.1

Interspecific relationship between a euryhaline rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis and a cyclopoid copepod Apocyclops borneoensis was investigated in the laboratory culture. In a mixed culture of B. rotundiformis and A. borneoensis, population growth of B. rotundiformis was suppressed from day 10, while growth in a monoculture population continuously increased throughout the experimental period. However, the population growth of A. borneoensis in the mixed culture did not markedly differ from that in a monoculture population. Suppression of B. rotundiformis growth coincided with a decrease in the numbers of both non-egg-bearing and egg-bearing females, and increasing resting egg formation. Growth of A. borneoensis was not affected by the presence of the rotifer. However, relative growth index of ovisac bearing females in the mixed culture was 1.62 times higher than that in the monoculture. Presence of the copepod did not greatly reduce the food available to the rotifer population. The rotifer B. rotundiformis responded in a unique way, to stresses such as physical damage (filtering by A. borneoensis) with the production of many resting eggs to increase its chances of survival.
