Background: Ginseng cultivation is conducted in sun-shade facilities, and farmers are demanding new cultivation facilities with high durability and reusability. Methods and Results: In this study, three different sun-shade facilities, slope-shading type (SST), small connecting-tunnel (SCTT), and gradient-tunnel (GTT) were compared in terms of temperature and ginseng growth. The highest temperatures recorded, occuring at 13:00 on August 9, were 42.9℃ for the SCTT and 40.9℃ for the GTT. The SST was 38.5℃ at this time point, which was the lowest of the three treatment. When temperatures above 33℃ were cumulatively calculated from June to August, the SCTT was higher by 2,731.7℃ and 124.5℃ than the GTT and SST respectively. Plant length, stem length, leaf length, and leaf width were significantly higher in SCTT and GTT than in SST. The root weight was 14.7 g, 14.5 g, and 15.3 g in the SST, SCTT, and GTT, respectively, with the highest root weight in GTT. Anthracnose incidence was marginally higher in SST; 1.7% for the SST, 0.3% for the SCTT, and 0.2% for the GTT. Damage caused by high temperature was the highest in SST (8.0%), and was lower in SCTT (5.7%) and GTT (7.3%). Conclusions: We found that SCTT and GTT facilities are safe for ginseng cultivation. Future studies should investigate ways to lower the temperature, such as by installing light-shield film.

Background: High temperature damage in ginseng is influenced by shading materials related not only to temperature, but also to light intensity and light quality. To address, this green-colored khaki shading sheet is widely used. As they are recently, developed, there is limited research information about their attributes and use. Methods and Results: The four-layered shading net (FLSN), blue-colored shading sheet (BCSS), aluminum-coated shading board (ACSB), and green-colored shading sheet (GCSS) were installed in the wooden A type of sun-block facilities. Two layered black, shading net was additionally used to cover the facilities since the beginning of June. The average temperature at the facility where different shades were tested was in the order of BCSS (28.9℃) > FLSN (27.7℃) > GCSS (27.6℃) > ACSB (27.1℃). However, high temperature injury rates were in order: FLSN > ACSB > GCSS > BCSS. Root weight vaired and was in the order: ACSB > GCSS > BCSS > FLSN. Conclusions: High temperature damage is possible not only because of temperature increase, but also due to various environmental light factors. Ginseng high temperature injury was minimal when BCSS or GCSS were used by difference of light quality. Although the root weight was higher in ACSB, it could be vulnerable to high temperature damage. Therefore, we propose using GCSS for ginseng shading.

The control system of human torso model and driving system of stethoscope for physical assessment trainer are developed. The detecting characteristics of circular pickup coil which is driven by square wave voltage signal with resonance frequency of LC circuits are investigated and it is confirmed that the pickup coil can detect the existence of chestpiece near the coil region. The control system of human torso model is composed of 8 channel pickup coils, Mp3 and Bluetooth module. The driving system of stethoscope is composed of chestpiece with contact switch and Bluetooth headset. The chestpiece detecting algorithm check the contact of chestpiece with human body model first and excite the pickup coil sequentially to find the location. The proposed system can be applied the physical assessment trainer.

Human muscles are generally responded to abrupt force during a vehicle crash, which affects the human body motion significantly during the crash. However, it is very difficult to realize the response of living muscle to the crash dummy, therefore it is ignored in most cases and there are only few reports about on effects of the response of living muscle. In this paper, a new muscle activation system using the electromagnetic actuator and linear springs was developed for the response of living muscle in a crash dummy and the quasi-static characteristics of the Hill-type muscle model was realized with the proposed muscle activation system experimentally. First, the muscle activation system was designed for a typical longissimus capitis muscle, and then a control system was developed to produce the quasi-static force-length characteristics of the muscle. Then, the muscle elongation system was built using a linear motion table which is driven by a ball screw and a servo motor and the muscle elongation test was performed. The test results showed that the proposed muscle activation system generated the quasi-static force-length characteristics of the Hill-type muscle model very accurately. Hereafter, if the performance of proposed muscle activation system is improved considering the dynamic characteristics of the muscle activation system using the frequency response function, then the proposed muscle activation system can be applied to the crash dummy, and it is expected to imitate the human body motion during the crash procedure.

Ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) is a perennial plant and propagates by seeds, and those need after-ripening for germination. To be ready for climate change and to ensure a stable seed supply, the technique for storing seeds in short-term and long-term in large quantities is required. In this study, dehisced ginseng seeds from two locations, batch #1 and batch #2, were stored at -3.5℃ with different moisture content, and after 3, 15, and 27 months of storage, the percentage of radicle emergence and shoot emergence were measured. After 3 months, radicle emergence and shoot emergence were normal only when the seed moisture content was more than 35%, and overall, germination was higher in batch #2 than in batch #1. After 15 months, the partially dehydrated seeds, with a moisture content between 45 to 54%, showed the highest germination rates, and most of the undried seeds were spoiled and failed to germinate. Seeds with moisture content lower than 25% had poor germination, too. The partially dehydrated seeds also succeeded in germination and growth in the soil after 15 months of storage, but deteriorated after one more 1 year, too. In summary, ginseng seeds look like have temperate recalcitrant seed characteristics, and partial dehydration allows extension of seed longevity.

Background: Abrupt cold, especially frost after seedling emergence, in spring causes servere losses in ginseng yield as it is a perennial crop and has a determinate growth. Although abnormal temperature occurs more frequently, the physiological aspects of ginseng to cold stress are poorly understood. Here we report the freezing response of ginseng under artificial conditions. Methods and Results: Cold treatment at -4℃ for 16 h resulted in a 21.4% damage rate in a cold chamber, however, no damage was observed at -2℃ and -4℃ for 2, 4, 6, or 8 h. High humidity increased the damage rate to 59.9% even at the higher temperature (RH 95%, -3℃) than the ambient temperature (RH 66%, -4℃) of the cold chamber. Seedlings early in the leaf expansion were damaged more than older ones. The quantum yield (Fv/Fm) of cold-damaged seedlings was lower than the control or seedlings without visual symptoms. The root weight of a damaged seedling one month after cold treatment was 58% of control. Conclusions: Our results suggested that visual symptoms are correlated with photosynthetic ability and yield after freezing stress in ginseng. We expect our results to contribute to the further understanding of ginseng freezing stress.

For the environmental safety of the operating room and patient healthcare, the closed type rebreathing system is widely adopted. In order to reduce the anesthesia gas during surgery, the mixing ratio of anesthesia gas with breathing air should be precisely controlled. Generally, the breathing air passes through the vaporizer to mix the anesthesia gas, but there is a difficulty in controlling the mixing ratio precisely. In this paper, the stand-alone style vaporizer is designed and the operating characteristics are investigated. The vaporizer measures the temperature and pressure in the vaporizing chamber and chamber temperature is precisely controlled by proportional controlled heater. Exact quantity of anesthesia media is feeded by PID controlled peristaltic pump and vaporized gas is mixed with breathing air flow by PWM controlled solenoid valve. The experimental result shows that the vaporizer has an excellent command following performances that it can be applied to the low flow anesthesia system.

The height of valve body is limited to 30㎜ in the cook-top style gas valves for the domestic gas ranges. But the all the safety specifications of KS should be fulfilled and the magnetic power unit(MPU) should be installed in the valve body for the safety reason. The length of MPU body is longer than the 30㎜ that it should be located in the square direction of the knob shaft and therefore the implementation of the lever mechanism to transmit the press motion of the knob to the MPU valve is very difficult. In this paper, the hinged lever with inclined plate is used to transmit the press motion of the knob to the MPU valve. The analysis of the gas flow with using the commercial software of FLOW-3D shows that the gas flow capacity is fit for the domestic gas range. The performance and responsibility of the valve is tested for the mass production and the test results shows that the valve can be installed in the commercial gas range.

In this paper the research of interlocking system for the multi compressor operation without! mutual communication between the compressors by installing a daughter board at each compressors which has absolute time conversion algorithm. The CPU at the daughter board counts the elapsed time from the absolute time information which is given by the real time clock chip with using absolute time conversion algorithm. The rank of the compressors are automatically cascaded at every exchanging periods and loading and unloading pressures of each compressors are changed according to the rank status. The operating loads of each compressors can be evenly distributed by this rank exchanging techniques that the life cycle of each compressors can be maintained almost the same. Furthermore, the compressor operating informations such as discharging air pressure, discharging air temperature and motor current consumptions can be monitored by a host computer with the graphic user interfacing software and all informations are stored by spreadsheet formats that it is possible to manage the historical data of each compressors.
