In recent years, a vast amount of research effort has been expanded to develop quantitative defect assessment procedures. As a result, the so-called Fitness-For-Purpose type Engineering Critical Assessment (FFP/ECA) approaches have been established for the girth weld defect assessment. But weld discontinuities are evaluated by only workmanship standards in our country currently. The risk for the situation of a dense population around the pipe-line and the damage caused by floods and fluctuating stress has been increased. Also the frequent repair and exchange of pipelines have forced user to high cost. The objective of this study is to analyze the defect assessment methodologies in an advanced country to prevent an accident and repair pipelines effectively, thereby there is to develop ECA approaches fit for our country.
