        대통령의 선거개입 이슈 보도

        This study explores how conservative(Chosun Ilbo and Dong-A Ilbo) and progressive(Hankyoreh and Kyunghyang Shinmun) newspapers in Korea covered the issue of Presidents’ interference with the various electoral process. Analyzing the 1351 articles about the issue involved with presidential, general and local elections for about 20 years from Young Sam Kim’s to Myung Bak Lee’s presidency, the study found that the newspapers covered the issue more importantly by writing relevant articles more frequently and longer; spread their opinion by using more columns and editorials; and criticized the interference more vividly in the presidency whose political orientation stood against that of the media than in the presidency whose political orientation reside in the same side. Although some caution is needed, the possibility of progressive newspapers’ consistent coverage tendency about the issue was found in some analyses regardless of difference or similarity of political orientations between the media and the presidency, since they wrote more stories in the politically identical presidency and put less columns and editorials and less criticism in the stories in the politically opposite presidency.

        디지털 시대 의제 설정 효과로서의 점화 이론

        This study examines the second level agenda setting process and the priming effects in the new media environment. Specifically, it explores the online media's agenda-setting effects on five different attributes of the global warming issue, and the effects' influence on people's shaping their own evaluative dimension relative to the issue. By exposing three groups of subjects, respectively, to three kinds of online newspaper (High, Medium and No Exposure) stimuli, the experiment attempts to determine (1) if there are attribute agenda setting effects in the digital era, and (2) if the attribute salience transfer affects the priming effects. The rank order correlations between the stimuli and the subjects' opinion on the attributes after the exposure to the stimuli support the attribute agenda setting effects of the online newspaper. A paired T-test found the priming effects of the online newspaper on the subjects. Additionally, regression analyses show the association between the attribute salience transfer and the priming effects. While the study employs the closed experimental setting, the results open a new challenge to revise and apply the methods to the actual environment. Making such a challenge may well broaden our knowledge to understand the digital media environment and its phenomena.

        한국 인터넷 매체들의 상호 의제 설정 효과

        This study explores the intermedia agenda-setting effects among 8 Korean online newspapers, 5 of which are online extensions of traditional media; one is an online edition of a wire service, and the other 2 are originalonline newspapers, which were born on the Internet. Rank order correlations revealed that some of the traditional media's online siblings influence others of the same kind, while they have no such effect on the original online newspapers. Original online newspapers and the wire service showed weak agenda-setting effects on the traditional media's online counterparts, but they do not have any agenda-setting effects on original online newspapers Although this study did not show perfect agenda sharing among these online papers, they showed the existence of intermedia agenda setting effects in the digital age, which could foretell different characteristics from what they were in the traditional media setting. The wire service's agenda setting power doesn't seem so strong as it was before. The original online papers do not share agenda for each other. That is, in spite of the existence of the online media's intermedia agenda setting effects themselves, the trends would be different from those in the traditional media setting.

        온라인과 오프라인 신문의 인용 적절성 비교

        Conducting quantitative content analysis about ‘verb objectivity’ and ‘source qualification’(source transparency and source credibility) coupled with quotations in news stories, this study explored how the information desirability is carried out by the online(Ohmynews and New Daily) and offline newspapers(Chosun Ilbo and Hankyoreh) in Korea. The results of the comparative study show that the online media performed better in terms of source transparency while the offline media performed better in regards with verb objectivity. The results seem to be used as an additional evidence to support good journalism practice of online media and to refuse the myth that the traditional papers perform journalistically better than their online counterparts. In the mean time, the authors diagnosed that the overall quality of news stories could diminish because each of online and offline media used only one of the variables of source quality or verb objectivity respectively which are supposed to be used simultaneously together to produce journalistically desirable information. Furthermore, it was recommended that linguistic approach should be borrowed to the study of journalism to deepen the understanding roles of quotations.

        환경 문제의 2차 의제설정효과

        This study explores the second level agenda setting effects of global warming issue and their relation with the issue's salience transfer. Dividing the issue into pro-environment and con-environment (or pro-economy) attributes and delivering them through pseudo-online newspapers, the study reveals that the media boost the audiences' perceived affective attribute salience better than substantive attribute salience. It is additionally supported that the affective attribute' salience transfer more likely affects the issue salience transfer than the substantive attribute does. The study results are quite different from previous researches dealing with political issues, because they posited that not the affective but the substantive attributes had closer relation with the issue examined. Consequently, they focused on examining the substantive attributes' role in public opinion formation. The current research, however, seems to herald that the affective dimension of attributes in the agenda setting study should not be missed but studied further in order to achieve the synthetic understanding of the media effects. As the first level agenda setting effects had broadened its theoretical boundaries by scrutinizing various issues, the second level agenda setting realm can be furthered by exploring diversified attributes of issues.

        한국과 미국 신문의 1면 기사 비교

        This study examined the use of sources in the front page articles of six Korean newspapers such as Chosun, Dong-A, Joong-Ang, Hankyoreh, Kyunghyang, Seoul dailies and two American newspapers including the New York Times and the Washington Post. Based on the categories of reporting areas and writing styles, it analyzed the frequency of source appearance in the articles. The results showed that the American newspapers use more sources in ‘politics’ and ‘economics’ reporting areas and ‘straight,’ ‘hard’ and ‘mixture of inverted pyramidㆍmodified inverted pyramidㆍnarrative’ news writing styles. It concluded that the results indicated the American newspapers were more apt to follow the norms of journalistic reporting and writing. The study, however, also suggested that the cultural difference of the news systems among various nations should be accounted in order to better analyze and understand the news contents of those individual countries.

        한·미 신문 기사의 심층성과 신뢰도 및 독창성 분석 : 6개 한국 신문과 2개 미국 신문 1면 기사를 중심으로

        This study examined the relationship between the information depth and the credibility-originality of front-page news articles by comparing six Korean newspapers such as Chosun Ilbo, Dong-A Ilbo, Joong-Ang Ilbo, Hankyoreh Shinmun, Kyunghyang Shinmun, Seoul Shinmun with two American newspapers including the New York Times and the Washington Post. The results showed that the higher the credibility and/or the stronger the originality were, the deeper the information was. Specifically, the American newspapers generally showed strong trends in using three aspects of information depth including transparency of sources, mixed viewpoints and stake-holders in their full articles with iumped parts, while Korean papers used more transparent sources in their stories, which only appeared in the front pages. Indicating the cultural difference in news systems between the two countries, the study recommended that the related stories of the Korean papers' front articles should be used in order to better compare them with American counterparts.

        취재원 활용을 통해 살펴본 한국 신문의 보도시각 고찰

        By empirically examining the valences of information given by various sources appearing in US beef imports articles of five newspapers such as Chosun Ilbo, Dong-a Ilbo, JoonAng Ilbo, Hankyoreh Shinmun and Kyung Hyang Shinmun, this paper investigates those papers’ political orientations. Although the socially accepted idea alleging the former three papers are conservative and the latter two are progressive was reconfirmed by the study results, JoongAng Ilbo was found to be the leading conservative paper regarding the beef imports issue and Kyung Hyang Shinmun to be the leading progressive paper, which had not been believed as such previously. To show statistically significant differences in political orientations between the collective conservative and progressive papers, the study also found that, those papers selectively utilized experts, NGO and citizen sources, which rank at the top, in the middle and at the bottom respectively in terms of credibility order. The authors pointed out that any newspaper could be the key player representing the conservativeness and/or progressiveness based on the natures of issues covered, and recommended that further studies should be conducted to explore the relationships between the newspapers’ source use and their political orientations.

        의제설정이론의 정향욕구 개념에 대한 탐구적 제언

        Revisiting the core psychological concept of need for orientation, this experiment examined the relationship between the magnitude of agenda-setting effects resulting from exposure to an online newspaper and three aspects of need for orientation: (1) personal involvement, newly re-conceptualized for a traditional need for orientation component of relevance (2) knowledge as an alternative to another traditional component of uncertainty, and (3) effort, an aspect deleted in the original need for orientation research during the 1970s. The results of the experiment demonstrate that all three are significantly related to agenda-setting effects, with personal involvement having the greatest weight followed by effort. Knowledge is only weakly and negatively related to the magnitude of the agenda-setting effects. Methodologically, this study introduces continuous measures for all three components, which allows the use of more sophisticated statistical procedures.
