A national park is a place to conserve natural resources and visitors to experience nature, and thus, it is necessary to identify the noise distribution characteristic in the national park and preserve and restore the soundscape. However, most national parks in Korea are exposed to noise, leading to negative perceptions of the national park’s soundscape and affecting the ecosystem. Many national parks in other countries have investigated the ecosystem impacts caused by noise and have performed various management to reduce the noise. However, in Korea, there is still a lack of awareness of the effect on the ecosystem, overlooking the need for soundscape management. Therefore, in this study, we developed a noise map of Mudeungsan National Park to investigate the quantitative impact of noise on visitors and the ecosystem. Also, we measured the trail's soundscape to describe a sound grade classification, and the soundscape of main spots in the park was recorded for a year and then analyzed. Finally, the sound resource distribution map was described, which can be used as preliminary data to determine the national park's sound distribution characteristics and manage the soundscape.

A number of dams have been constructed for water supply, irrigation, flood control and hydropower in Korea for the last century. Recent studies indicated that the artificial reservoirs impounded by these dams are major sources of carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere and relevant to global budget of green house gases. The objectives of this study were to estimate the Net Atmospheric Flux (NAF) of CO2 by measuring water quality variables at 500 m upstream of four weirs (A, B, C,D) located in the lower Nakdong River basin, and analyze the influencing variables that characterize the NAF variations. Averages and ranges of the estimated NAFs are as follows; A:196.86(-8.4~975.7) mg/m2/d, B:106.63(-202~711.6) mg/m2/d, C:10.47(-170.9~326.5) mg/m2/d, D:349.66(-28.7~739.5) mg/m2/d. The NAFs showed a strong negative correlation with pH and Chl-a concentration, and showed a positive correlation with DIC. The pH tended to decrease as the water depth increased, while Chl-a was higher in the weirs located further downstream area. In the four weirs section of the Nakdong River, the CO2 NAFs were significantly decreased and sometimes turn to negative values as the algae biomass increased in summer. It is considered that the carbon dioxide consumption via the algal photosynthesis process resulted in the variation of the NAF value. The excessive growth of algae driven by the change of the water environment after the weirs construction contributed to reduce the carbon dioxide emission from the stagnant water. The results imply that humans made dams and weirs may promote carbon emissions to the atmosphere, while phytoplanktons, which likely over-growth in the standing waters, play a role in reducing carbon emissions.

In this study, toxicity monitoring of sediments collected from 25 stations in the Geum river basin was conducted using Daphnia magna and Moina macrocopa. According to the results of acute toxicity tests (immobilization and mortality) of organic extracts of semdiments, Miho stream showed much less toxicity than Gap and Nonsan streams. In particular, significant toxicity was observed in both species for St. 15 and St. 16 sediment samples that passed through Deajeon city as a branch of Gap stream. For Nonsan stream, St.23 sediment showed high toxicity toward M. macrocopa. This site seemed to be affected by upper agricultural industrial complex. Additionally, M. macrocopa showed a higher sensitivity than D magna for organic extracts of sediments. In the case of toxicity tests using sediment pore water and aqueous extracts, only pore water of St.27 sediment was toxic against D. magna. Toxicity identification evaluation showed that hydrogen sulfide was likely a major toxicant in the pore water.
