When occlusal force is applied to a tooth, stress concentration occurs on the dental cervical line. This study investigated to find the maximum force and strain of natural teeth using an Instron and strain gauges, comparing the strain of cervical enamel using finite element analysis(FEA). Tests were conducted with a mandibular first premolar applying the conditions of occlusion. Then, the FEA was processed with the same as conditions of the fracture test. The test showed that the maximum force, maximum compressive strain and maximum tensional strain was 278±26 N, 0.668×10-3±0.678×10-3 and 0.248×10-3±0.102×10-3, respectively. It was found that six of eight measured strains were within the range of estimated strains by the FEA. Even though it was assumed that properties of FE models were isotropic, it could prove useful as a reference in understanding the tendency of dental strain.

In this study, biomechanical stability of the newly developed revision total knee arthroplasty (rTKA) was evaluated through strain and stress distribution analysis within the implanted proximal tibia using a three-dimensional finite element (FE) analysis. 2000N of compressive load (about 3 times body weight) was applied to the condyle surface on spacer, sharing by the medial (60%) and lateral (40%) condyles simulating a stance phase before toe-off. The results showed that PVMS within the revision total knee arthroplasty and the proximal tibia were less than yield strength considering safe factor 4.0 (rTKA: less than 10%, Cortical bone: less than 70%, Cancellous bone: less than 70%). The materials composed of them and the strain and stress distributions within the proximal tibia were generally well matched with those of a traditional revision total knee arthoplasty (Scorpio TS revision system, Stryker Corp., Michigan, USA) without the critical damage strain and stress, which may reduce the capacity for bone remodeling, leading to bone degeneration. This study may be useful to design parameter improvement of the revision total knee arthoplasty in biomechanical stability point of view beyond structural stability of revision total knee arthoplasty itself.

The use of artificial bones in implant testing has become popular due to their low variability and ready availability. But the hole, which is created during the production process in located proximal tibia, is apprehended to change stress distribution pattern and make stress concentration. The purpose of this study was to analysis of stress distribution pattern & micromotion deviation between cancellous bone and baseplate according to hole using finite element analysis (FEA). von Mises Stress around the hole at medial, lateral on the cortical surface was measured 63.1%, 66.6% higher than the filled hole model, respectively. But Micromotion between tibia and baseplate was similarly measured in the safe region(0~45μm). These results indicate that mechanical test with artificial bone should be considered the effect of poximal tibia hole.
