It has been more than 10 years since the Korean government launched a multicultural education policy. Nevertheless, much concern has been voiced about the difficulties that multicultural students faced in school and Korean society. This study aimed to investigate the Korean government’s multicultural education policies and explored its strengths and limitations. For this purpose, government policy documents on multicultural education between 2006 and 2017 were collected and analyzed based on four approaches to multicultural education, namely, the assimilation approach, pluralism approach, neoliberal approach, and critical approach. The results showed that Korean government multicultural education policies relied heavily on the assimilation approach in the early stage and then gradually on the neoliberal approach. Policies based on a pluralistic approach were occasionally implemented, but were very limited in scope. In consequence, structural problems that perpetuated cultural prejudice and inequality remained unsolved while minority students were forced to adapt quickly to the mainstream culture. The findings suggest adopting such a critical approach to multicultural education encourages critical awareness and participation in building democratic education and society.

기후변화는 인류가 직면한 심각한 위기로, 이에 대한 교육적 대응이 시급하다는 인식이 학교 현장을 중심으로 확산되고 있다. 그러나 기후위기에 대응하기 위한 교육이란 무엇이며, 그 구체적인 실천은 어떠해야 하는가에 대한 논의는 아직 부족하다. 최근 기후위기에 보다 근본적으로 접근하는 데에 있어 포스트휴먼 생태주의 관점이 주목을 받고 있다. 포스트휴먼 생태주의 관점은 기후위기의 원인에 대한 총체적이고 근본적인 성찰을 위해서 인간과 비인간, 문화와 자연 간의 관계에 대한 재고가 필요하다고 주장하며 지구 생태의 위기를 이해하고 대처하는 데에 통찰력을 제공함에도 아직 그 실천 사례들을 찾아보기 힘들다. 이에 본 연구는 포스트휴먼 생태주의 관점에서 기후변화교육의 모습을 실제 사례를 통해 구체화해 보고자 한다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 포스트휴먼 생태주의를 이론적 토대로 하며, 세 개의 학교 사례를 질적으로 분석함으로써 기후변화교육의 구체적인 실천 방안을 탐색하였다. 연구 결과, 세 개의 사례는 포스트휴먼 관계적 주체임을 깨닫는 교육, 응답 능력을 기르는 교육, 감응 교육, 탈위계적 교육, 긍정적 윤리학에 근간한 교육이라는 점에서 포스트휴먼 생태주의 교육의 가능성을 갖는 것으로 나타났다. 이 같은 연구 결과를 토대로 교사들의 실천 및 교육 정책과 교육과정 연구에의 시사점에 대하여 제언하였다. Educators are increasingly aware that it is imperative that they respond to the climate change crisis in schools. However, they are still grappling with ways to construct and enact the relevant curriculum. In seeking a comprehensive understanding of the climate crisis and attempting to envision responsive educational practices, posthumanist ecology offers a profound theoretical understanding. It urges educators to reexamine our assumptions about the relationships between human and non-human, as well as culture and nature, and reimagine a climate change education. However, there is a paucity of research on pedagogical practices grounded in posthumanist ecology. Hoping to reveal the critical characteristics of posthumanist climate change education in curricular and pedagogical practice, this study examined three cases of Korean schools in which teachers embraced the goal of providing climate change education through the theoretical lens of posthumanist ecology. Analysis of the three cases showed that posthumanist climate change education 1) positions teachers and students as relational beings, 2) encourages them to be response-able for the posthuman world, 3) engages them in affect education, 4) creates non-hierarchical relationships among various ways of being, and 5) embraces the ethics of affirmation. The implications for teachers, curricular scholars, and policy makers are discussed.
