A feeding trial with 20 heads of Holstein heifers was conducted for 90 days to investigate the feeding value of whole corn crop and corn ear with husk pellets. Four treatments were control, T₁ (corn ear pellet), T₂ (whole corn crop pellet) and T₃ (rice straw pellet). The results are summarized as follows. 1. Feeding corn ear pellet or whole corn crop pellet improved (p$lt;0.01) weight gain of dairy heifers with no significant differences between whole corn crop pellet and corn ear pellet, or between rice straw and control group. 2. Feed intake of experimental animals was higher in the order of T₁, T₂, T₃ and control group. However, the trend was not conclusive. 3. Feed cost per kilogram weight gain when expressed percent of control was 95.3, 94.6 and 11.1 for T₁, T₂ and T₃ group, respectively, indicating that feeding corn crop pellets was more economical for weight gain. Results from a present experiment show the feasiability of using whole corn crop pellet and corm ear pellet as a good feedstuff for ruminants.

This experiment was conducted to estimate the effects of NaOH treatment with or without pelleting the rice straw for Holstein heifers and lactating cows through feeding trials for 105 days. For two feeding trials, 20 heifers weighting approximately 283 ㎏ and 20 lactating cows producing 20.5 ㎏ of milk and weighing 539 ㎏ on the average were divided 4 groups i.e., control group (raw rice straw chopped in 5 ㎝), 1% NaOH treated group, 3.5% NaOH treated pellet A group (1.7-1.8 ㎝ in diameter and 4-5 ㎝ in length) and 3.5% NaOH treated pellet B group (2.4 ㎝-2.5 ㎝ in diameter and 3.5 ㎝ in length). The results obtained were summarized as follows. 1. In heifer, the average daily gain (ADG), the average daily rice straw intake (ADRSI), and the total daily feed intake (TDFI), respectively, for the various groups were as follows (1) 0.46, 0.89, 6.05 ㎏ (2) 0.49, 1.01, 6.20 ㎏, (3) 0.64, 1.84, 7.19 ㎏, (4) 0.56, 1.84, 7.10 ㎏. Significant differences were noted in ADG or TDFI (p$lt;0.05) and ADRSI (p$lt;0.01). 2. In lactating cow, for the respective treatments, milk production amounted to 14.67, 16.29, 16.52 and 17.84 ㎏; fat content in milk was 3.93, 3.72, 4.09 and 3.68%. However, no statistical differences were shown among groups. Total daily feed intake and the daily rice straw intake were the same tendency to milk production.

The study analyzed in the study were collected from the results of performance-testing on Corriedale, Polwarth at the Nawweon Branch of the National Animal Breeding Institute from January 1981 to May 1985. Birth weights, weaning weights, body weight at the age of 18-month were analyzed; and constants and least-squars means for the traits were estimated by the least-squares methods. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Years of birth affected significantly body weights at birth, at weaning and at the age of 18-month in corriedale and Polwarth(p $lt;0.01). The constant estimates of years of birth for birth weights ranged -0.167∼0.208㎏ in corriedale and -0.113∼0.089㎏ in Polwarth, and the corresponding figures for weaning weights were estimated -1.655∼1.509㎏ and -1.983∼2.051㎏; and the estimates for body weight at the age of 18-month were -1.982∼2.746㎏ and -1.757∼1.884㎏, respectively. 2. The effects of ages of dam were significant for birth weights and weaning(p $lt;0.01), but were not influential for body weights at the ages of 18-month. The constant estimates of ages of dam ranged -0.124∼0.079㎏ for birth weights and -0.664∼0.631㎏ for weaning weights in Corriedale, and the corresponding estimates in Polwarth were -0.133∼0.086㎏ and -0.628∼0.921㎏ respectively. Lambs from above two-year-old matured ewes were heavier than those from two-year-old ewes. 3. Sex of the individual lamb greatly affected birth weights and weaning weights in Corriedale and Polwarth, but no significant differences were found between lamb sexes in birth weights in polwarth compared with the birth and weaning weights of ewe-lambs those of ram-lambs were 0.08㎏ heavier in Corriedale and 0. 06㎏ heavier in polwarth, and weaning weights of ram-lambs were 1.22㎏ heavier in corriedale and 1.02㎏ in Polwarth. 4. Types of birth had significant effects on body weighs at birth and weaning in Corriedale and Polwarth(p $lt;0.01). Singles were heavier than twins by 0.68㎏ in corriedale and 0.48㎏ in polwarth at weaning In body weights at the age of 18-months singles were superior to twins by 0.54㎏ in Corriedale and by 2.84㎏ in Polwarth, and a significant difference was detected only in polwarth
