Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia, characterized by prominent episodic memory dysfunction. Recent studies have suggested that there is a sequential mechanism in the memory deficit, with long-term ones preceding short-term ones. However, there is lack of explanation for these symptoms. Interaction between the hippocampus and retrosplenial cortex (RSC) during slow-wave sleep (SWS) is a crucial step for successful long-term memory formation. In particular, sharp-wave ripple (SWR) is a principal hippocampus oscillation that coordinates with RSC activity. To determine the relationship between memory dysfunction and SWR-related oscillation changes in AD, we implanted local field potential electrodes in the hippocampus and RSC of AD model mice (APP/PS1). We found that the SWR-coupled ripple wave increased in the RSC, while the amplitude of the SWR was preserved. In addition, the corresponding delta power in hippocampus and RSC was elevated, together with altered delta synchrony in AD mice. All these findings showed a significant correlation with long-term memory deficits measured in contextual fear conditions. Our study suggests that altered SWR-coupled oscillations are a possible underlying mechanism of episodic memory dysfunction in AD mice.

Backgrounds: Temporal lobe epilepsy with hippocampal sclerosis (TLE-HS) is not always intractable to antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). To identify the responsiveness to AEDs and related clinical factors in TLE-HS, we performed this study. Methods: Consecutive 100 (51 men, mean age=30.2±6.6, age range=19-50) patients with TLE-HS were divided into two groups by their responsiveness to AEDs. Intractable TLE-HS was defined if they had any seizures for the preceding year with at least two AEDs. Clinical factors were analyzed to find the association of the responsiveness to AEDs. Results: Intractable TLE-HS was found in 68% of patients. The younger age of onset (12±4 vs. 31±8 years, p<0.0001), longer duration of epilepsy (17±6 vs. 2±1 years, p<0.0001), more than five tonic-clonic seizures (GTCs) with secondary generalization (29.4 vs. 6.3%, p=0.0009) and bilateral epileptiform abnormalities on EEG (30.9 vs 6.3%, p=0.0054) were significantly correlated with the intractable TLE-HS. According to multiple logistic regression analysis, bilateral epileptiform abnormalities on EEG (adjusted OR=9.4, 95% CI: 1.98~44.76) and more than five GTC (adjusted OR=7.7, 95% CI: 1.60~33.39) were independently related with poor responsiveness to AEDs in TLE-HS. Conclusions: The presence of hippocampal sclerosis does not necessarily mean intractability to AEDs. The clinical variables related with the poor response to ADEs in TLE-HS are more than five GTCs and bilateral epileptiform abnormalities on EEG. Si/SiOx Anode Fabricated by a Solution-based Method for Lithium Ion Batteries
양현우,박현영,이정호,김선재 한국공업화학회 2016 한국공업화학회 연구논문 초록집 Vol.2016 No.1
Si-based anode materials were found to have a largest theoretical capacity and low reaction potential. However its initial high capacity showed a drastic decrement due to microstructural distortions or disintegrations caused by large volume changes (about 300 times) during intercalation-deintercalation of lithium ions. To solve these issues, SiO2-based materials have been considered as a promising replacement. The SiOx precursor was synthesized when Ethylene glycol was poured with vigorous stirring into the mixture solution of SiCl4 and Benzene. Before EG pouring, three kinds of SiCl4 solutions with 1, 3, and 9 wt% ratios of dispersed silicon (Si) nanoparticles had been prepared under continuous stirring. The white gel-type SiOx precursor which had contained Si nanoparticles was heat treated. Our data suggest that an optimized amount of silicon added to SiOx could play a critical role in improving the capacity while maintaining high capacity retention of SiOx anode.

Background: The case of pseudo-aneurysm of internal maxillary artery in oral and maxillofacial region is known to be very rare. The etiology of this case was regarded as internal maxillary artery injury by radiofrequency ablation and such incidence was not reported previously. Case presentation: One case of false aneurysm in the internal maxillary artery was referred from local dental clinic to our department. Left facial swelling was observed with severe trismus immediately after radiofrequency procedure for masseteric nerve block in local dental clinic. Despite of medication and surgical intervention, the swelling did not subside and there was massive bleeding and pulsation on one of the follow ups. The traumatic vascular disorder was suspected and finally diagnosed with angiography and treated by embolization procedure. Conclusion: Radiofrequency ablation targeting masseteric nerve or trigeminal ganglion may cause traumatic injury to adjacent anatomic structures such as internal maxillary artery, resulting in pseudo-aneurysm. Clinicians must be aware of potential damages of radiofrequency ablation. Angiography enables the solid diagnosis for pseudo-aneurysm, and selective embolization can be optimum treatment method.
