Richard Chase`s concept of the American romance as distinct from the English novel has held powerful sway in the world of American novel criticism ever since the publication of his The American Novel and Its Tradition in 1957. However, his theory has not remained unchallenged, and indeed recently it has even been declared unfounded. An examination of the history of American romance theory including its criticism is necessary in order to illuminate important critical issues concerning American literature. Chase`s concept of romance is largely indebted to Lionel Trilling`s liberal approach to American literature. Chase predicated his theory on the assumption that the American novel, in contrast to the English social novel, has been oriented toward creating an imaginative literary space tree tram social reality, and thus has been symbolic, mythic, and archetypal rather than social or realistic. From the 1980s onward, theorists of American romance have developed the concept further, correcting its meaning and enlarging its scope, and thus making it ever more resilient American romance has now even been made critical and historical rather than purely imaginative. The legitimacy of American romance, however, has been called into question by those critics of American literature who are concerned with the socio-historical aspects of the American novel. Their criticism covers a wide range of arguments, but is primarily focused on revealing the social, historical and political aspects of the American novels which the romance tbeory has subtly and systematically excluded. More recently, it has been argued that the American romance theorists were influenced by the Cold War consensus and the aesthetics of modernism which privileged the individual and the cultural over the collective, the social and the political and reduced dissent into a matter of individual freedom, disconnecting it from the public sphere. Romance, the argument goes, has been a concept overdetermining the assumptions of Cold War liberal ideology. "Romance" can no longer sustain its conceptual effectiveness unless it is reconsidered against the background of the historical context from which it emerged, especially early nineteenth-century American history. It can regain its legitimacy only when it is re-historicized, that is, when it is re-examined in close relationship to its historical context as the product of the dialectic between history and imagination.

다양한 반응 조건에 따른 적색안료 57:1의 입자거동 및 특성

본 연구에서는 Pigment Red 57:1의 다양한 합성 방법에 따른 입자 거동 및 그의 따른 색상, 점도, 및 분광학적 특성등을 분석하기 위하여, 합성 시간, pH, 유도체 함량 및 결정화 온도 등의 변수를 이용하여 시료를 합성한 후 그 분산액을 제조하였으며, 그에 따른 특성을 비교·분석하였다. 시료들의 특성은 푸리에 적외선 분광기, UV-Vis 분광기, 입도분석기, 색차계, X선 회절 분석계 등을 이용하여 비교·분석하였다. 그 결과 합성 조건 조절을 통하여 안료 입자의 크기를 다양하게 조절하는 것이 가능하였다. In this study, various Pigment Red 57:1 samples and also their dispersant were prepared in various synthesis conditions via changing parameters such as synthesis time, pH, derivative content and synthesis temperature in order to analyze the pigment particle behaviors and their spectroscopic and physical properties. Each sample was analyzed using Fourier infrared spectroscopy, UV-Vis spectroscopy, particle size analyzer, color spectrophotometer and X-ray diffractometer and their characteristics were compared. As a result, it was possible to control the size of pigment particles by controlling the synthesis conditions.

Narrating and Gaming in The Confidence-Man

허먼 멜빌의 『사기꾼』이 제기하는 중요한 문제중의 하나는 서술자의 신뢰성이다. 우선 서술자는 자신의 일관성 없는 인물묘사를 변호하면서 자신이 묘사하는 인물이 일관성이 없는 이유는 현실에서도 일관성 있는 사람을 찾기 쉽지 않으며 따라서 일관성 없는 인물을 그리는 것은 현실에 충실한 것이라는 현실모방론을 펼친다. 그러나 동시에 서술자는 인간본성은 외적으로는 가변적이지만 근본적으로 동일하다는 주장을 함으로써 자신의 일관성 없는 인물묘사가 인간본성을 포착하지 못하는 피상적인 것이라는 자기 모순적인 견해를 펼친다. 한 걸음 더 나아가 서술자는 작가가 현실과 유리되지 않으면서도 현실에 속박되지 않은 또 다른 세계를 그려야한다는 호쏜의 로맨스론과 유사한 문학관을 제시함으로써 자신이 주장한 현실모방론과 정면으로 배치되는 주장을 하기도 한다. 서술자의 이런 일관성 없는 서술행위는 그가 주인공인 사기꾼과 마찬가지로 독자와의 언어게임을 하고 있다는 의구심을 불러일으킨다. 그러나 이런 유사성은 서술자가 주인공과 마찬가지로 사기꾼이라는 점을 암시할 수도 있겠지만 역으로 주인공 사기꾼이 진지한 서술자 혹은 작가의 모습을 반영하고 있다는 암시도 될 수 있다. 주인공 사기꾼의 이런 진지한 모습이 나타나는 부분은 그가 찰리라는 인물과 유머를 논하는 부분이다. 그는 유머를 예찬하지만 아이러니컬하게도 대화의 문맥 속에서 유머와웃음은 현실적 요소의 긴장을 해소하지 못한다. 그는 또한 셰익스피어의 『겨울 이야기』에 등장하는 오톨리쿠스의 유머에는 오톨리쿠스의 사악한 장난기를 상쇄시키는 유머 고유의 미덕이 존재하지 않는다는 점을 심각하게 지적한다. 여기에는 전통적으로 사회문제들을 웃어넘기게 하는 대중 해학 문학의 장르를 사용하면서도 동시에 현실에 천착함으로써 현실의 문제를 단순히 웃어넘기지 못하는 진지한 작가로서의 멜빈의 고민이 반영되어있다. 즉, 독자를 즐겁게 하는 것과 진리를 말하는 것을 동시에 성취하기 어려운 적가 멜빌의 고뇌가 사기꾼의 언어에서 드러나는 것이다. 이런 고뇌는 사기꾼이 셰익스피어를 숨은 태양에 비유하는 데에서 더 잘 드러난다. 셰익스피어가 태양인 것은 그가 빛을 비추는 즉 독자를 계몽하는 역할을 수행하기 때문이고 그가 숨어있는 것 즉 모호하게 말하는 것은 독자를 계몽하는 즉, 진지를 전달하는 행위가 공공연할 수 없고 독자를 즐겁게 하는 행위 속에 숨겨져 있어야하기 때문이다. 이런 고뇌는 곧 작가 멜빌의 상황을 반영한다. 멜빌의 초기 작품에는 태양에 대한 공공연한 예찬과 진리 전달에 대한 확신 그리고 독자에 대한 신뢰가 나타난다. 그러나 멜빌은 이후 독자의 취향에 맞지 않는 진지한 작품들을 쓰는 과정에서 대중 독자와의 심각한 갈등을 겪는다. 그러나 멜빌은 그의 『피에르』가 독자로부터 심각한 외면을 당한 이후에도 끊임없이 독자와의 관계를 추구해왔으며 『사기꾼』은 이런 문맥 속에서 읽혀야 한다. 따라서 『사기꾼』에 나타나는 현란한 언어 게임을 독자와의 전통적인 관계를 거부하고 즉흥적인 독자층의 형성을 추구하는 포스트 모더니즘적인 문학으로 읽는 것은 멜빌이 사기꾼의 언어 게임에서 마저도 독자를 계몽하고 진리를 전달하려했다는 사실을 간과한 오독이 될 수 있다.
