1976년 노벨문학상 수상자이며 현존하는 미국의 최고 지성작가인 솔 벨로우(Saul Bellow, 1915- )의 다섯 번째 소설인 『비의 왕 헨더슨 』 (Henderson the Rain King, 1958)은 매우 환상적이고 희극적인 작품이다. 주인공 유우진 헨더슨(Eugene Henderson)은 자신의 삶을 전환시키려는 아프리카 모험을 통해 삶의 가치와 진리를 새롭게 확인하고 자신의 인생을 이상적으로 완성시키려 한다. 벨로우가 이전에 내세웠던 가난한 유태계 주인공과 달리 새로운 주인공 유우진 헨더슨은 아버지로부터 엄청난 유산을 물려받은 앵글로 색슨(Anglo-Saxon)계통의 부유한 인물로 아버지가 자살한 이후에 자기 가족의 유일한 생존자이다.

Mexico에서 독수리 Caligula가 창공을 나르는 것을 바라보는 Augie의 모습은 생명의ㅣ다른 순환기 즉, 미래를 예상하려고 Aldebaran별을 관찰하던 Aztec 점성가를 연상시킨다. Augie라는 이름은 Latin어 Augur에서 유래한 것으로 새가 나르는 것을 보고 미래를 점치던 성직자를 의미한다. Dangling man의 Joseph이 사회참여를 결심하고 The Victim의 Leventhal이 사회적 책임의식을 각성케 한 다음 Saul Bellow는 Augie의 모험적인 인생 체험을 통해 현대사회의 인간생활이 살아 갈만한 가치가 있는지 확인하고 Augie March를 통해 정당화시킬 수 있는 작가로서의 새로운 인생관을 제시하려고 한다, 복잡해진 현대사회는 개인이 견디기 힘든 무서운 힘으로 인간의 운명을 압도하려 하기 때문에 Bellow는 무엇보다도 생존 투쟁에서 개인은 인간의 운명을 위압하거나 패배시키려는 힘에 대항하여 자신의 인생을 확립시킬 수 있는 힘을 갖추어야 한다고 생각한다.

인문학의 몰락에 대한 위기의식

Saul Bellow has been usmg those around him as his literary material for half a century. From the beginning, childfood friends and relatives glimpsed pieces of themselves in his novels. In 1975 he made the life of Delmore Schwaltz(l913-66), a poet destroyed by alcohlism and madness, into the core of good novel, Humboldt's Gift. Bellow published his last novel to set up a Iiteray monument to his friend Allan Booom, titled Ravelstein. Allan Bloom, who was Bellow's closest friend and fellow professror at Chicago Univeversity, wrote an astonishingly successful critique of education The Closing of the American Mind in 1987. Ravelstein is a littel thin m the plot department. It has anti-plot which consists of Chick's inability to write his memoir. The narrator Chick, who is Bellow himself, dredges up anecdote about his subject, assembling a composite portrait. Bellow begins his novel at the Hotel de Crillon in Paris, where the Bellow-like narator is having breakfast with the Bloom- like character. Abe Ravelstein, while "Nikkie, Abe's companion, was still sleeping. In his thirties, handsome Nikkie was boyish still. Ravelstein can afford to stay the Crillon because his book has made a great fortune. Abe Ravelstein is a brilliant professor who glories in training the movers and shakers of the political world. He has lived grandly and much beyond his means. His close friend Chick has suggested that he put forth a book of his convictions about the ideas which sustain humankind, or kill it, and much to Ravelstein's own surprise, he becomes a millioinaire. Ravel stein suggest in turn that Chick write a memoir or a life of him, and during the course of a celebratory trip to Paris the two share thoughts on mortality, philosophy and history, loves and friends olda and new, and routines from the remote past. The mood turns moresomber once they have returned to the Midwest and Ravelstein succumbs to AIDS and Chick himself heartly dies. This novel is journey through love and memory which is brave, dark, and funny. It also an elegy to friendship and to lives well lived. However, contemporary Americans no longer take the cultural tradition and humanistic intellectuals seriously that Saul Bellow consistantly has insisted in his novels as a writer.

도덕적 휴머니즘의 수호

Artur Sammler는 궁극적인 진리를 발견하려 하거나 자신의 경험과 의식을 관념화시키기 위해 혼신의 노력을 기울이는 활동적 인물도 아니고 이미 자신이 체득한 관념과 진리를 확신하고 다만 그 진리를 옹호하고 다른 사람들에게도 전파하기를 희망하는 수동적인 인물이다. 그는 생존경쟁이나 사회의 혼란속에 뛰어들기보다 인생의 관찰자일 뿐이며 자기가 보고 느끼는 것에 대해 혼자 조용히 판단을 내릴뿐이다. 이러한 판단의 명쾌성이나 침투성이 소설의 사건을 이끌어가는 것보다 독자들에게 해설이나 강의형태의 모습을 느끼게 한다. 그래서 Mr.Sammler’s Planet 에서 작가 saul Bellow가 구성을 소홀히 하고 주인공의 뚜렷한 활동이 없는 느슨한 plot의 전개와 허구적인 작중인물을 자기 멋대로 창조하고 있다고 많은 비평가들이 불만을 나타내고 있다. Irving Howe는 이 작품을 ‘the ideas and action of this novel are not sufficiently integrated’ 라고 말하고 David Gallowy는 ‘the bankruptcy of Bellow‘s novelistic imagination' 이라고 혹평하며 Gilbert Porter는 ‘Bellow’ s moral indignation seems to overshadow his artistic control’ 이라고 비판하고 있다. Ben Siegel은 ‘the Bohemianizing of American society’ 라고 공격 하고 John Clayton은 ‘Bellow was consciously αeating a Sammler who was projecting his own repressed lifee onto his age' 라고 평가하고 있다. 이처럼 saul Bellow는 Mr. Sammler’s Planet 에서 그동안 작가로서 발휘했던 훌륭한 통찰력을 제대로 발휘하지 못하고 있다는 비판을 받었는데 Bellow 자신도 이 작품이 ‘a sort of polemical thing’ 임을 인정하면서 다음과 같은 작가의 변을 말하고 있다. It’s my first thoroughly non-apologetic venture into ideas. In Herzng and Hendersun the Rain King I was kidding my way to Jesus, but I'm baring myself nakedly. 그동안 많은 비평가들이 Bellow의 주장을 긍정하는 것보다 Bellow가 작가로서 사과해야 할 것이 많다고 불평해 왔지만 Bellow가 이 작품에서 metaphor를 교묘하게 활용하고 있는 점에 무관심한 경향도 주목해야 할것이다. Mr. Sammler’s Planet 에서 Bellow는 전통적 윤리관, 강렬한 도덕적 열정, 온건한 지성적 인간애, 개성적인 철학과 독백, 학문적인 토론, 회극적인 사건, 불만스런 사회상의 이야기를 복합적으로 구성한 plot of thought의 특정을 구현하고 있기 때문이다. 특히 이 작품에서 Bellow는 인간윤리의 가치와 존재를 강렬한 의지로 옹호하고 있다. Bellow가 전통적으로 현대에 이르기까지 문명사회를 지켜 온 휴머니즘 시대의 발전을 촉진시키는 과학적 합리주의, 현대적인 자유분방한 개인주의를 서로 대조시키면서 숭고한 자아와 도덕의식을 옹호하는 작가의 문학적 주제를 표현하는데는 사건위주의 전통적 plot형태보다 사생과 관조위주의 plot 전개가 더욱 적합할 수도 있는 것이다. Christian Kulshreshtha와의 인터뷰에서 Bellow는 Mr. Samm ler’s Planet이 읽기 어려운 작품임으로 주의깊게 읽어주기를 당부하고 있다. I have no way of knowing whether the book succeeds or not, but in my own defense I think it is Possible to say that people do not read attentively and are not very willing to undertake hardwork. It is hard work, a book like that. Each word is carefully weighed and connected, closely connected, to the man. The internal processes of Mr. Sammler require the very narrowest attention. You have to see that he is never speaking out of character and that he never says anything simply for the sake of saying the thing, but what I wanted to create-I don' t know how successful I was in this-was the thinking of such a person never dis-connecting the thought from the person, so that these things are never presented in the book as sermons, but rather as monologue. Perhaps the monolgue is too long and perhaps it is tedious, possibly it breaks down-I don' t know. It seems to me-and it seemed to me when I wrote it -that it was sustaining itself through the passion of the thinker and that it was justified, that there was no superfluous word or movement in the book. The idea, therefore, is that these thoughts were so intimately embedded in the mind of Mr. Sammler and are ‘so much part of his subjective state that I myself do not think of them as mere exercise in thought . Bellow는 주인공인 Mr. Sammler의 내면적 사고활동의 전개에 독자들이 관심을 두기를 요망하면서 주인공의 불필요한 행동을 제거했다고 말한다. 본고에서는 서로 대립하고 상반되는 진리로 구성되는 현실을 관찰하면서 주인공 Mr. Sammler가 현대사회의 도덕적 혼란과 윤리의 방종을 비관하거나 절망하지 않고 희망과 기대를 갖고 Humanism을 지키려는 모습을 통해 saul Bellow의 문학적 인생관을 연구하고자 한다.

Saul Bellow와 실존주의 : Dangling Man을 중심으로

현대 미국 문학계의 중요한 소설가들 가운데 생존작가로써 이미 고전적 작가의 위치에 이른 Saul Bellow(1915~)는 30년 이상에 걸친 꾸준한 작가활동을 통해 그 뛰어난 문학적 업적을 인정받아 1976년 영예의 Nobel 문학상을 수상한 작가로 현대 미국 소설가중 가장 대표적인 작가로 인정되고 있다. Bellow는 Canada의 Quebec주에서 태어났으나 9세때 가족이 미국 Chicago로 이민하여 그곳에서 청소년시절을 보냈다. 부모는 러시아계 유태인이었으며 처음 시카고 대학교에 입학했다가 2년뒤 자퇴하고 North Western 대학에 들어가 이학사가 되었고 Wisconsin 대학의 인류학과 대학원 과정을 마쳤다. 1944년 29세때 처녀 장편소설 Dangling Man을 발표했는데 이 작품은 제2차세계대전시대에 대한 한 지성인의 심리상태를 훌륭하게 증언하여 작가로서의 문학적 능력을 인정받게 되었다. 대부분의 작가가 작품의 배경이 서로 다를지라도 한가지 문제에 일관성있게 집착하는 것이 일반적인 속성이다. 작품의 Plot과 등장인물의 변화에도 불구하고 작가의 의식속에 항상 맴돌고 있는 자신의 Dilema를 집요하게 추구하여 그 해답을 발견하려고 작가들은 노력하는 것이다. Keith Opdahl(1967 : 3)이 “All of Bellow's novels express a single issue, the absurd discrepancy between aspiration and achievement”라고 말한 것처럼 Bellow는 현대인의 세계에 등장하는 불합리한 모순들에 대해 지성인의 입장에서 내면적으로 투쟁하여 현대인의 참된 자아를 찾아내려고 노력한다. Dangling Man은 Bellow 소설들의 방향을 예고하는 나침반의 모습이라 할 수 있다.
