Vol.22 No.3

The notion of extrametricality is significant in English stress theory. Extrametricality was developed to account for situations where peripheral elements of a phonological constituent are disregarded when establishing where a given rule is applicable at the edges of a constituent. The purpose of this paper is to consider the rise and fall of the notion of extrametricality in English stress theory. Since the notion was first introduced by Liberman and Prince(1977), it has had explanatory value in capturing insights about the English stress system in the treatment of word final syllables in quantity-sensitive languages. However, with the introduction of Optimality Theory, the notion has rarely been used, and instead a nonfinality constraint has been used in most articles. In chapter II, we discuss rule-based extrametricality by Hayes(1982) and Burzio(1995). In chapter III, nonfinality not using extrametricality is discussed on the constraint-based theory. Conclusion is given in chapter IV.

Vol.32 No.3

This paper aims to propose some criteria to classify English coordinative compounds and reclassify English coordinative compounds based on the criteria. English coordinative compounds have been called different terms. Different names mean that the classification of coordinative compounds is unsettled. It has been assumed that the grammatical relations between the two constituents comprising compounds are not only subordinate or determinative, but also coordinative. However, the coordinative, especially what we call appositional compounds would be analysed as subordinative. In this paper a lot of English compounds which have been interpreted as coordinative(appositional) compounds are assumed to be subordinative rather than coordinative. And many so called coordinative compounds are subclassfied as additive and hybridity compounds based on the additional criteria of the coordinative compounds. This classification will help understand English coordinative compounds.

Vol.27 No.3

The CVCV theory proposed by Lowenstamm(1996) interprets phonological constituent structure as the consequence of lateral relations that hold between segments. CVCV holds that syllabic constituency reduces to a strict consecution of non-branching Onsets and non-branching Nuclei in all languages. The purpose of this paper is to show that English syllable structure has the CV type, which is known as the most basic syllable structure in human languages. It will be suggested that English syllable structure is composed of a sequence of an obligatory onset and nucleus, based on Government Phonology and Strict CV Phonology by Lowenstamm(1996). In chapter two, I review some syllabifications from the traditional point of view and discuss English syllabification by the GP and CVCV model. In chapter three, different empty categories will be discussed. Chapter four shows some phonetic grounds of the CV type. Finally I conclude the study in chapter five.

Vol.16 No.2

There have been some disputes among phonologists and phoneticians over the problem of neutralization. There are three types of obstruents in Korean: tensed, aspirated, and neutral. The phonological distinction among obstruents is maintained in domain initial position. However, it is not maintained in domain final position nor when followed by consonant initial suffixes. The phonological distinction is neutralized and only a certain type of obstruents can occur. An account for this neutralization phenomenon based on SPE framework did not give an explanatory adequacy. In addition, rewrite rules explaining neutralization were arbitrary. Feature Geometry theory needed resyllabification to explain neutralization phenomena. However, in Government Phonology, neutralization can be explained without the resyllabification or rewrite rules. In Korean, for example, neutralization can be explained through the interpretation of the syllable structure. And neutralization is the strengthening process rather than weakening which delinks features. The aim of this paper is to survey neutralization phenomena in different phonological theories and to explain them through the Government Phonology. It can be seen that GP has the explanatory adequacy in explaining obstruent neutralization.

Vol.26 No.2

Syncope is defined as the deletion of a schwa within a word. The consonant clusters created by syncope have usually been analysed as coda-onset clusters. The CVCV model proposed by Lowenstamm(1996) interprets phonological constituent structure as the consequence of lateral relations that hold among segments. Lateral relations are the central tool of CVCV. CVCV holds that syllabic constituency reduces to a strict consecution of non-branching Onsets and non-branching Nuclei in all languages. The purpose of this paper is to show that syncope-created consonant clusters in English actually have the same structure as branching Onsets. In chapter two different types of syncope are classified. Chapter three presents representations of consonant clusters by CVCV. In chapter four we analyse the syncope created consonant clusters and represent them by the CVCV model. Finally we conclude the study in chapter five.
