전문 학사지도시스템을 통한 교양교육에 대한 인식 개선- 연세대학교 1학년 세미나 “YONSEI RC101”을 중심으로

Many researchers have found that most undergraduates are not well aware of the importance of general education, which may result in disappointing general education experience. Since academic advising is for promoting positive education experience by having students adequately understand the meaning of college education, it was researched to see if academic advising can play a role in improving students’ perception on general education and contribute to increasing the effects of general education ultimately. Firstly, YONSEI RC101, a first year seminar taught by professional academic advisors at Yonsei University, was closely examined. It was found that YONSEI RC101 clearly explained the meaning of college education, the structure of general education, and specific competencies one can attain by taking a general education course. Also a survey given before and after the course indicated that YONSEI RC101 improved students’ level of understanding on the goals of general education and understanding of the general education structure. It was also confirmed that it promotes students’ perception on core competencies a student can develop through general education and increased student exposure to the purposes of general education. 학사지도의 주요 목표중 하나는 대학에서의 학업의 의미와 효과를 이해시키고 이를 통해 교육효과를 증진하는 것이다. 현재 교양교육에 대한 대학생들의 인식은 교양교육의 중요성과 의미를 고려할 때 상당히 부족하며, 이러한 낮은 인식은 교육의 효과에 부정적인 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 본 논문은 전문학사지도시스템이 대학 교양교육에 대한 학생들의 인식 제고에 효과가 있으며. 이를 통해 교양교육의 효과 증진에 기여할 수 있음을 밝히기 위한 것이다. 본 논문에서는 전문학사지도시스템에서 기획 운영하는 전체학생 대상의 1학년세미나 YONSEI RC101에서 대학교육의 현재적 의미와 대학별 교육목표, 교양교육 과정에 대한 이해, 교양교육의 의미와 목표, 교과목을 통해 함양 가능한 핵심역량 등에 대해 명시적으로 다루고 있음을 살펴보았다. 그리고, 1학년세미나 YONSEI RC101 수강생을 대상으로 한 2차례의 설문 사전 사후 검사를 통해 (1) 대학 교양교육 목표에 대한 이해 수준 (2) 대학의 교양교육 교육과정에 대한 구체적 이해 (3) 대학 교양교육을 통해 성장될 핵심 역량에 대한 이해 (4) 대학의 교양교육 목표에 대한 충분한 교육 정도에 대한 답변을 분석하였다. 그 결과 모든 설문 문항에서 사전검사와 사후검사간의 통계적으로 유의미한 차이로 향상이 존재하였으며, 교양교육에 대한 인식제고를 위해서 실시한 학사지도 1학년세미나 YONSEI RC101의 교육효과가 나타났음을 볼 수 있었다.

유학생을 위한 기초·교양 강좌의 운영 현황과 과제 ― 연세대학교의 경우

In recent years, South Korea has become a popular destination for higher education across the globe. Although the rate slowed down after 2011, the number of international students coming to South Korea to study in college or higher academic institutions has been increasing exponentially since the beginning of the century. For decades, many young South Korean students have chosen academic institutions abroad for quality education. However, the number of international students coming to Korea to study was limited, causing imbalance in the international service trade for the South Korean government. To alleviate the worsening trade deficit in education, the South Korean government launched ‘Study Korea Project’ in 2005 to position South Korea as an attractive destination for higher education. Coincidentally, various types of Korean cultural products started to garner international fame around the same time. The global presence of South Korean corporates such as Samsung and LG helped revamping the image of South Korea. As everything took effect simultaneously, many Korean academic institutions enjoyed the surge of international students. International students, however, found South Korea and its academic institutions difficult to adjust due to their poor language proficiency, lack of understanding of the Korean culture and limited cultural sensitivity of Korean students, staff, and faculty members. The increasing volume of international students is a big challenge to any institutions in South Korea. In order to secure their academic success, it is imperative to help international students understand the Korean culture and its communication style so that they can fully integrate into the South Korean higher education scene. Customized general education courses and programs for international students should be available as well. In this paper, three courses provided to international students in Yonsei University are illuminated; ‘Basic Korean Writing for Foreign Students,’ ‘Inter-Cultural Communication for International Students,’ and ‘Yonsei101 for International Students.’ Detailed information on each course will be provided as well as problems and shortcomings detected during the operation. As do so, new approaches and suggestions on educating international students in South Korean academic institutions will be explored. 최근 몇 년 사이 한국은 세계 여러 나라 젊은이들이 선호하는 인기 있는 고등교육 대상국가가 되었다. 2011년 접어들면서 증가 폭이 줄어들고 있지만, 한국에서 대학 교육 또는 그 이상의 교육을 받고 싶어 하는 외국인 학생들이 최근 몇 년 사이 급증하였다. 그러나 많은 외국인 학생들이 한국 고등교육기관에 적응하는 데 어려움을 겪고 있다. 외국인 유학생들의 한국어 능력이 제한적이고, 한국문화에 대한 이해도 결여되어 있다. 또한, 함께 공부하는 한국인 학생들뿐만 아니라 교직원들 역시 급증하는 외국인 학생들을 대할 수 있는 문화적 감수성이 결여되어 있다. 급증하는 유학생들은 국내 대학들의 기초·교양교육에서 큰 어려움이자 도전의 기회를 제공하였고, 이들의 성공적인 대학생활을 지원하기 위해 다양한 방안을 모색해야만 할 필요성이 제기되었다. 유학생들이 효과적으로 자신을 한국어로 표현하며, 한국문화에 대한 이해와 의사소통 방식을 터득하여 대학생활 초기에 대학의 당당한 구성원으로 설 수 있도록 지원해야 할 필요성이 증대되었으며, 이를 위해 국내의 대학들은 외국인 유학생들을 위한 특화된 교양교육 교과목을 제공하고 있다. 이 논문에서는 외국인 유학생들을 위해 기초·교양교육 과정에서 어떤 노력을 기울이고 있으며, 또 특화된 교과목은 무엇인지 소개하였다. 유학생을 위한 한국어 글쓰기 교과목인 ‘기초한국어글쓰기,’와 ‘글쓰기(특례)’ 강좌의 목표와 방향을 살펴보았으며, ‘유학생을 위한 Inter-Cultural Communication’과 ‘유학생을 위한 Yonsei RC101’을 소개하였다. 이 논문에서는 수업 내용과 운영 방식, 그리고 한계를 언급하는 동시에 이상의 교과목들을 통해 국내 대학들이 시도해볼 수 있는 새로운 접근 방식의 가능성을 제안하고자 하였다.

1학년세미나의 발전방안 연구 : 연세대학교 사례를 중심으로

The purpose of this study is to develop an improved course design for first year seminars, based on the analysis of the effects of first year seminars at Yonsei University. First, this study reviews the background of developing first year seminars such as the demographic changes of college students and the changes of educational settings, and then categorizes various first year seminars into those with structured programs and with individual themes according to their characteristics and purposes. The main section of this study analyzes the effects of Gateway to College (GTC), a structured first year seminar of University College, Yonsei University. This one credit seminar course was devised to help first year students make successful transition to college life and explore their majors and careers. To make it an efficient joint-advising program, GTC was designed as a team teaching course between academic advisors of University College and faculties of related majors. The typical contents of GTC consist of Yonsei spirit, study skills, college life planning, global leadership, and major/career exploration. A part of contents may vary depending on the major and college. We conducted the evaluation surveys from students and instructors at the end of the semester. The results and several suggestions are as follows. First, GTC was an effective course for freshmen to develop a sense of solidarity to Yonsei community, to increase knowledge about majors and careers, and to elevate their motivation for college life. It could be utilized as an efficient sphere of systematic academic advising for freshmen. Second, for the improvement of a structured first year seminar course; themes of seminar courses should be coherent and concrete; the concerns of majors or colleges need to be reflected in the program ; class size needs to be maintained under 50 to achieve better educational outcome; collaborative system between academic advisors and major faculties should be established before the classes begin; peer leaders who had attended the same course could facilitate effective interactions between instructors and students, and also among the students.
