This paper aims to classify morphological, syntactic and semantic properties of Korean adjectives to assign required linguistic information to electronic lexicon entries. Morphological information including inflectional classes is the first demanded in the automatic language processing system. We present 24 inflectional classes for about 6,000 adjectives defined by a formal criterion. We here introduce 15 syntactic classes and 12 semantic classes of adjectives, which can be used to extract syntactico-semantic information from online documents.

In this study, we describe the linguistic characteristics of online review texts on Movie in order to develop an efficient opinion evaluation system of online documents: we analyze especially lexico-semantic features such as positive keywords or negative keywords, syntactic properties such as negative constructions, distribution of collocated nouns, conditional constructions, comparative constructions, and some frozen expressions conveying a positive or negative polarity. We underline the current approach to opinion mining using mostly statistical methods should be reinforced with a more serious linguistic description of review texts. We introduce a finite grammar named LGG(Local-Grammar Graph) which allows to formalize linguistic description into finite-state graph equivalent to FST(finite-state transducer): this task can be performed in an efficient way by the support of the UNITEX developed for this purpose. We present a result of the application of the LGG-MOVIE which represents a part of the linguistic patterns we discussed in this paper on a new sub-set of review texts on Movie.

Postpositions that are attached to nouns in Korean sentences have been named by various terms and classified into several sub-types according to scholars’ theoretical viewpoints. Nonetheless, relatively little work has been devoted to providing an exhaustive nomenclature of postpositions and an empirical classification of these units. In order to construct an electronic dictionary of all surface forms in Korean, a complete list of simple units that constitute complex sequences of postpositions is required as well as a complete list of restrictions in their combinatorial properties. This study has been conducted to build an accurate list of simple postpositions that would be indispensable to the implementation of a dictionary of complex forms of postpositions. In this study, 142 simple postpositions have been discerned and classified into 4 major classes. These 4 classes have been sub-classified into 22 types, which will be indicated as POS tags in an electronic dictionary, and therefore, marked as the output of morphological analysis.

This paper aims to recognize Korean negation markers that can reverse the opinion polarity expressed by opinion keywords, which has emerged as a prominent obstacle for the opinion classification systems essentially based upon the polarity of keywords. In this study, Negation markers have been classified as negation adverb, negation auxiliary, and negation support term. The last type that is the most problematic form in recognition has been selected on the basis of the most frequent opinion keywords observed in predicative position. These negation markers are formalized by means of the finite-state local grammar graph formalism LGG and applied in the analysis of online opinion documents. The result obtained from the application of the LGGs in online movie review texts reveals that the LGG-based approach adopted in this study is efficient in recognizing Korean negation markers.

The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal, 21(2), 217-241. This study aims at classifying opinion polarity of subjective texts (such as positive vs. negative opinions) on the basis of a set of finite-state grammers (named Local-Grammer Graphs: LGGs) on ‘nemwu Adjectives’ collocations. Most opinion classification system function by recognizing opinion key words. However, some linguistic devices such as negation markers. Conditional or concession clause markers or some adverbs should be counted since they can play a role of Polarity Shifting Devices (PSD). The adverb menwu, being highly frequent in online opinion texts, can be used as a typical PSD, and thus the accurate analysis of this adverb will be crucial for implementing a reliable opinion classification system. In this study, a dichotomy of nenwu(i.e. an intensifying adverb vs. an opinion introducer)proposed by Nam(2012a) is used as the basic assumption for the construction of LGGs of ‘newmu Adjectives’. A set of finite-state local grammer graphs is constructed and applied in online movie review texts by means of the UNITEX system. The result shows the accuracy of 92.7% of recall and 97% of precision in the automatic classification of opinion polarity.
