Flipped Learning means, in the literal sense of the word, the method of learning that has been done in and out of the classroom in a “flipped” kind of way. Knowledge transmission, that mainly occurred in the classroom in the traditional educational system, happens before the lecture; and during the lecture students participate in more active educational activities. In design education, a lecture is not a one-way knowledge transmission, but rather an apprenticeship education based on practice. Recently, as design knowledge and theories have started to gain momentum, design courses have begun to mix theoretical lectures and practice instead of sticking to mere practice. In industrial design education, many courses are structured upon both lectures and practice. These courses suffer from a lack of practice time due to lecture time and the absence of an educator nurturing knowledge during practice. To solve these problems, this study develops a Design Flipped Learning Model (DFLM) and applies it to UX & Interaction Design, which has been evaluated as the most theoretical and difficult course among Industrial Design curriculum courses. According to DFLM, students acquire knowledge by learning objective elements through various types of contents on their own, and conduct pre-assignments to apply the knowledge before the lecture. Then, during the lecture, students share what they have done, discussing what they have learned and the problems they have encountered. Students who participated in DFLM evaluated it as positive in terms of the level of difficulty and efficiency. This study concludes that DFLM provides design educators with a guideline for a new learning model through examples and the structure of theoretical contents and pre-assignments.
