Vol.26 No.-

The purpose of this study is to introduce and evaluate Rodney Stark`s Theories of Rational Choice in Religion within the context of the success of Early Christianity. To this end, Chapter I identifies some foundational issues related to the success of Early Christianity. Stark insists that it is possible to analyze numerically the success of Early Christianity. I evaluate the possibility that this analysis is based on his theories of Rational Choice in Religion. Chapter II describes the success of Early Christianity in the terms of his theories. Stark attempts to analyze the major reasons behind the success of Early Christianity by means of theological and social approaches. According to his theological approach, Early Christianity had the advantage of its idea of monotheism together with its written Bible. This distinctiveness made Early Christianity successful above and beyond other religions in the Greco-Roman period. Seen through the lens of Stark`s social approach, Early Christianity could be seen to have formed networks of friendship, to have practiced charity for the poor, to have raised the status of women in the church, and to have benefited as an organization thereby. Chapter III of the present study concludes with a critical evaluation of Stark`s theory and with the possibility of applying his doctrines to the social formations involved with Korean churches and to the discipline of sociology itself. Scholars in sociology, I argue, are skillful in surveying and collecting both the phenomena and data relating to the church. However, it is more appropriate for scholars of church history to analyze and describe both the phenomena and current status of the church rather than to focus solely on sociological description. This paper nonetheless also emphasizes the urgent necessity of reconciling the methods of church historians with those of sociologists in the Korean context.

Vol.25 No.-

The purpose of this study is to introduce and evaluate Rodney Stark`s sociological approach in terms of the success and prospect of Mormonism. To this end, Chapter I identifies some foundational issues related to the surroundings of modern Mormonism. Stark uses the term “Mormonism Phenomenon” to refer the political, religious, and social concern as to the faith and its success. Chapter II describes the status of Mormonism in the current world. Stark attempts to analyze the major reasons behind the success of Mormonism by means of social approaches. According to his social approach, Mormonism typically achieved its successes thanks to the use of social networks and the overcoming of the theory of secularization. Stark introduces ten necessary conditions of success of Mormonism: conservation of cultural capital, nonempirical doctrines, medium tension, legitimate authority, labor force, adequate fertility, ecological factor, network ties, staying strict, and effective socialization. This distinctiveness made Mormonism successful above and beyond other religions in the world. Seen through the lens of Stark`s social approach, the numbers of Mormons worldwide will be 64,000,000(30%, rate of increase) or 276,000,000(50%, rate of increase) in 2080. Chapter III of the present study concludes with an evaluation of Stark`s theory. I introduce several scholar`s work in sociology to analyze Stark`s approach tm Mormonism. This paper nonetheless also emphasizes the urgent necessity of studying the success of Mormonism in the light of the failure of mainline churches.

Vol.- No.100

The purpose of this study is to introduce and evaluate the spirituality of the Anabaptists after Covid-19 pandemic. Covid-10 pandemic forces us to reexamine all things including our social lives and church ministry. To this end, chapter I identifies some foundational issues related to the current pandemic society, including both the situations of the current church and major characteristics of the modern society such as excessive competition, materialism, individualism, and social polarization. This study emphasizes the restoration of our faith and advocates a new perspective for viewing and coping with our current society. Chapter II describes the formation and the major faiths of the Anabaptists. In 1527 Felxis Manz (c. 1498-1527) and Michael Sattler (1490-1527), who was later a member of the Swish brethren, demanded radical reformation of the Swish Mennonites, who were Anabaptists which stressed the believer’s baptism and the separation of church and state. These theological views were the main characteristics of the major two faith confessions of Schleitheim (1527) and Dordrecht (1632). Chapter III delineates the faiths and practices of the Anabaptists. The Anabaptists demand discipleship (faith), loving brotherhood and loving sisterhood (community), as well as both forgiveness and tolerance, in a way remarkably contrasted with modern society. The Anabaptists usually attempt to pursue what they perceive to be the best option for achieving the teachings of Jesus Christ, largely based on Sermon on the Mount, Matt. 5-7. They have no church buildings, no electricity, no cars, and no shape. They emphasis forgiveness and tolerance in any situation and live simple lives, which encompass such matters as housing, clothes, and eating. They practice and sustain these rules to keep their community and faith. These characteristics of the Anabaptists remarkably contrast those of modern society. Chapter VI of the present study both concludes with emphasis on a critical evaluation of the Anabaptist’s beliefs and practices, and introduces the Korean Anabaptist movement. This paper also emphasizes the urgent necessity of dealing with both a new way forward with regard to modern social problems. The spirituality of Anabaptists demands not intellectual but virtuous lives, not knowledge but wisdom, not competition but community prosperity, and not the fusion of the secular but rather the spiritual and a focus on the living the holy life.

Vol.22 No.-

The purpose of this study is to understand the formation and process of Rodney Stark`s Church, Sect, and Cult. For this purpose, chapter I identifies foundational issues related to the formation of sociology of religion and surveys prior sociological approaches to the Church-Sect process, including those of Max Weber, Ernst Troeltsch, and H. Richard Niebuhr. Chapter II describes these sociologists` theories about Church-Sect. Weber formed the word `sociology` first and identified the definition of church and sect. According to Weber, the church is a hierarchic, inclusive organization; the sect is democratic and exclusive. Troeltsch extended Weber`s theory by adding the additional criterion of the degree of religious accommodation or compromise with the values of society involved. Sects are negative, with respect to the dominant societal values; the church, meanwhile, achieves its social powers, by compromising crucial ethical or religious values. Niebuhr characterized the sect as a charismatic primary group in tension with the values of the larger society. Niebuhr stressed a dynamism by which sects become churches as they face the dilemma of recruitment and the incorporation of the children of sect members. Chapter III delineates Stark`s position on church, sect, and cult. Stark criticizes the theories of prior sociologists. He describes the church-like dimension as the power of an individual or group which is positively associated with control of religious organizations and with gaining the rewards available from religious organizations and the sect-like dimension as the power of an individual or group which is negatively associated with accepting religious compensations, when the desired reward exists. For the sect-formation, Stark identifies the reasons behind the schism of religious groups, the social cleavage, and conflicts involved in this process, and issues relating to sect leadership, and external forces. He proposes that when some potential sect leaders expect to increase their rewards by leading a sect movement, they will form a new sect. For the formation of cult, he supplies three models: the psychopathology model, the entrepreneur model, and the subculture-evolution model. Chapter VI of the present study concludes with an emphasis on the specific contribution of and a critical evaluation of Stark`s theory. This paper also emphasizes the urgent necessity of dealing with new sects in Korea.
