Adhesion and friction tests were carried out in order to investigate the effect of temperature on the tribological characteristics of poly (methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) film using AFM. The pull-off and friction forces on the PMMA film were measured under a high vacuum condition (below 1×10?⁴ Pa) as the temperature of the PMMA film was increased from 300 K to 420 K (heating) and decreased to 300K (cooling). Friction tests were also conducted in both high vacuum and air conditions at room temperature. When the temperature was 420 K, which is 25 K higher than the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PMMA, the PMMA film surface became deformable. Subsequently, the pull-off force was proportional to the maximum applied load during the pull-off force measurement. In contrast, when the temperature was under 395 K, the pull-off force showed no correlation to the maximum applied load. The friction force began to increase when the temperature rose above 370 K, which is 25 K lower than the Tg of PMMA, and rapidly increased at 420 K. Decrease of the PMMA film stiffness and plastic deformation of the PMMA film were observed at 420 K in force-displacement curves. After the heating to 420 K, the fiction coefficient was measured under the air condition at room temperature and was found to be lower than that measured before the heating. Additionally, the RMS roughness increased as a result of the heating.

Background: Measurement of chlorophyll fluorescence (CF) is useful for detection the ability of plants to tolerate environmental stresses such as drought, and excessive sunlight. Cnidium officinale Makino is highly sensitive to water stress and excessive sunlight. In this study, we evaluated the effect of soil water and shade treatment on the photosynthesis and leaf temperature change of C. officinale. Methods and Results: C. officinale was cultivated under uniform irrigation for 1 week drought stress (no watering) for 6 days. A significant decrease in CF was observed on the 5th day of withholding water (approximately 6% of soil water content) regardless of shading. Notably, the Rfd_lss parameter (CF decrease rates) with and without shade treatment was reduced by 73.1% and 56.5% respectively, at 6 days compared with those at the initial stage (0 day). The patterns of the degree of CF parameters corresponded to those of the soil water content and difference between leaf temperature (Ts) and air temperature (Ta). Meanwhile, CF parameters recovered to the 3 - 4 days levels after re-watering, while the soil water potential was completely restored. The suitable soil water content for C. officinale optimal growth was between -5 ㎪ and -10 ㎪ in this experiment. Conclusions: Lack of soil water in the cultivation of C. officinale, even with shading, decreased latent heat cooling through transpiration. As a result, heat dissipation declined, and the plant was subjected to drought stress. Soil water content plays a major role in photosynthesis and leaf temperature in C. officinale.

Adhesion tests were conducted to investigate the adhesion characteristics between mold and thermoplastic polymer film. Coating of anti-sticking layer (ASL), a kind of polymer material, imprint pressure, and separation velocity were considered as the process conditions. A piece of fused silica without patterns on its surface was used as a mold and the thermoplastic polymer films were made on Si substrate by spin-coating the commercial polymer solution such as mr-I PMMA and mr-I 7020. The ASL was derived from (1H, 1H, 2H, 2H -perfluorooctyl) trichlorosilane(F₁₃-OTS) and coated on the fused silica mold in vapor phase. The pull-off force was measured in various process conditions and the surfaces of the mold and the polymer film were observed after separation. It was found that the adhesion characteristics between the mold and the thermoplastic polymer film and the release performance of ASL were changed according to the process conditions. The ASL was effective to reduce the pull-off force and the damage of polymer film. In cases of the mold coated with ASL, the pulloff force did not depend on imprint pressure and separation velocity.
