A numerical analysis is presented to show the lubrication characteristics between the piston and cylinder in reciprocating compressors (Re-Comp) for refrigerator. The pressure distributions in the clearance are showed for various piston shapes. The effect of oil viscosity, the minimum clearance and the piston shapes on the friction forces acting on the piston, leakage flow through the clearance and theoretical power consumption are also investigated. Partially tapered piston is more effective than any other piston shapes because it reduces power consumption and enhances volumetric efficiency. Therefore the results of present study can be used usefully in designing and manufacturing of the Re-Comp.
